Adult nymphalid butterflies possess sensilla trichodea (ST) that perceive taste in their walking legs. We examined whether the gustatory responses to mid-leg tarsal stimulation were different between Vanessa indica (rotting-food feeder) and Argyreus hyperbius (flower-nectar feeder). Sucrose, fructose, and glucose elicited behavioral responses (proboscis extension reflex: PER) and electrophysiological responses (spikes) from ST. Sugar responsiveness was similar in both species, where sucrose was the most stimulatory. Two fermentation products, ethanol and acetic acid, never induced PERs but elicited large-amplitude spikes at a concentration of >1% (w/v). The two species significantly differed in responsiveness to the binary mixtures of sucrose and the fermentation products. Ethanol enhanced the sugar responses of V. indica but slightly inhibited those of A. hyperbius. Although acetic acid suppressed the sugar responses of both species, V. indica was less susceptible than A. hyperbius. When concentration of the fermentation products increased, binary mixtures evoked large spikes together with small ones regarded as the sucrose responses. Unlike the proboscal sensilla in our previous study, the tarsal ST of both species unambiguously responded to fermentation products. These results demonstrate that the tarsal gustatory sense of V. indica is adaptive to the use of rotting foods.  相似文献

Wingless arboreal ants must resist the force of gravity while traversing substrates in their environment. For leaf‐cutting ants like Atta cephalotes, foraging may also include a ca. 30 m vertical descent while carrying a load 1–6 times their body mass. We hypothesized that heavier and larger ants would carry heavier and larger loads and that adhesive performance would positively correlate with load mass. We found no relationship between ant mass, body length, head width, or adhesive performance, and the load size an ant carried. In addition to workers carrying vegetative loads (most often leaves), workers in an active foraging trail also include smaller workers riding on the leaves carried by larger workers, and large major workers, providing protection from aerial and ground attacks (Soldiers), respectively. Despite varying functional roles, all foraging ants require secure attachment to the substrate. We measured shear adhesive performance of each foraging role and found that Soldiers produced the highest shear adhesive forces. However, when controlling for tarsal pad area, we found that ants carrying loads have higher shear adhesive performance per unit area than those riding on leaves, and that Soldiers have the lowest shear adhesive performance per unit area. This suggests that while leaf choice does not appear to be dictated by size, mass, or shear adhesive performance of individual ants, overall, ants who carry leaves adhere more strongly given their pad size than those who do not. Subtalar joint arthroereisis (SJA) has been introduced to control the hyperpronation in cases of flatfoot. The objective of this study is to evaluate the biomechanical consequence of SJA to restore the internal stress and load transfer to the intact state from the attenuated biomechanical condition induced by posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD). A three-dimensional finite element model of the foot and ankle complex was constructed based on clinical images of a healthy female (age 28 years, height 165 cm, body mass 54 kg). The boundary and loading condition during walking was acquired from the gait experiment of the model subject. Five sets of simulations (conditions) were completed: intact condition, mild PTTD, severe PTTD, mild PTTD with SJA, severe PTTD with SJA. The maximum von Mises stress of the metatarsal shafts and the load transfer along the midfoot during stance were analyzed. Generally, SJA deteriorated the joint force of the medial cuneonavicular and calcaneocuboid joints during late stance, while that of the metatarsocuneiform joints during early stance were over-corrected. Only the calcaneocuboid joint force at 45% stance demonstrated a trend of improvement. Besides, SJA exaggerated the increased stress of the metatarsals compared to the PTTD conditions, except that of the first metatarsal. Our study did not support the hypothesis that SJA can restore the internal load transfer and midfoot stress. SJA cannot compensate the salvage of midfoot stability attributed by PTTD and could be biomechanically insufficient to restore the biomechanical environment. Additional procedures such as orthotic intervention may be necessary.  相似文献

Ricinuleids are one of the least investigated groups of Arachnida. In particular, knowledge of their ultrastructure is poor. Observations of the distal tarsomeres of ricinuleids show differences in their shape and equipment of surface structures. Legs I and II are used by the Ricinulei to explore their surroundings with tentative movements. The tarsomeres of these legs show similarities in shape and surface structures that distinguish them from those of legs III and IV. In this study, 11 different structures of the tarsomere surfaces of two cave-dwelling species, Pseudocellus pearsei and P. boneti from México, were investigated for the first time with scanning and transmission electron microscopy and discussed regarding their possible function: 1) a single treelike ramifying seta resembles a no pore single-walled (np-sw) sensillum; 2) setae occurring in a small number and possessing a bipartite shaft represent terminal pore single-walled (tp-sw) sensilla. The surface of the proximal half of the shaft shows small branches. The distal half has a smooth surface; 3) long setae with conspicuous longitudinal lamellae show characteristics of chemoreceptive wall pore single-walled (wp-sw) sensilla; 4) frequent small wp-sw sensilla with flat and irregular lamellae; 5) very short wp-sw sensilla occurring solitary or in groups; 6) a few short setae with smooth surface correspond to wp-sw sensilla; 7) a single short clubbed seta articulating in a flat pit is considered to be a np-sw sensillum; 8) common long setae with a pointed tip show characteristics of mechanoreceptive np-sw sensilla; 9) ventral setae with adhesive and mechanosensory function are accompanied by multicellular "class III" glands; 10) slit organs with mechanoreceptive function; and 11) dome-like tubercles with no indication of sensorial function. Several of these sensilla form a sensory field on the dorsofrontal surface which is particularly pronounced on the distal tarsomeres of legs I and II.  相似文献

The function of standing on one leg in birds has long been attributed to reducing heat loss from the unfeathered legs to the external environment. Whilst a handful of single‐species studies correlate the use of the behaviour with ambient temperature, the degree to which it is used across taxa is unknown. Given that leg‐length varies between species, the length of the leg (relative to body size) may mediate the use of this thermoregulatory behaviour, such that birds with longer legs should roost on one leg more than those with relatively shorter legs at any given ambient temperature. We tested this prediction through field observations and comparative analyses of nine shorebird species, with varying tarsi length relative to body size. Six of the nine species examined used unipedal standing more as temperatures decrease, indicating its role as a heat conservation behaviour. We also found that species with relatively longer legs roosted on one leg more frequently across a wide range of temperatures. Species with shorter leg lengths likely rely less on this posture to insulate the relatively smaller surface area of the legs. Our findings showed that the long accepted notion that birds stand on one leg more at colder temperatures holds, and that species with smaller relative leg length were less reliant on this behaviour to minimise heat loss from these bare appendages.  相似文献

When given a choice of cotton (host) and ground cherry (non host) in a close range situation, Heliothis virescens (F.), the tobacco budworm, depends primarily on contact chemoreception and mechanoreception, and not olfaction or vision, to discriminate between these two plant species for oviposition. Further, in the presence of a certain level of hairiness (the non-host plant, ground cherry, has short capitate hairs), the females are capable of discriminating between these two plants based on contact chemosensory cues, if at least one pair of tarsi is intact. The contact chemosensilla on the ovipositor do not seem to be important for this purpose. These results are discussed in relation to the sensory cues and receptors for oviposition in other Lepidoptera, especially moths.
Signaux et récepteurs sensoriels intervenant dans la ponte d'Heliothins virescens
Résumé Les différentes récepteurs sensoriels (chimique, mécanique et visuel) des femelles d'H. virescens ont été rendus inactifs par traitement à l'acide, antennotectomie ou peinture des yeux avec un enduit noir du type vernis à ongles, pour étudier le déterminisme sensoriel de la sélection des hôtes lors de la ponte; les papillons avainet le choix entre le coton (Gossypium hirsutum), sur lequel ils pondent normalement, et Physalis angulata sur lequel on n'observe pas de pontes dans la nature. Au laboratoire, à faible distance, le choix de H. virescens dépendait en premier lieu des mécanorécepteurs et des récepteurs chimiques dits de contact (gustatifs), et non de la vision ou de l'olfaction. En présence d'un certain niveau de pilosité (P. angulata possède de courts poils capités), les femelles choisissent les plantes en fonction de la perception chimique dite de contact (gustation) tant qu'une paire de tarses reste intacte. Les sensilles chimiques de l'ovitube ne semblent pas jouer un rôle important à cet égard. La discussion a examiné ces résultats à la lumière des processus sensoriels utilisés par d'autres papillons.

Perception of the oviposition deterring pheromone by contact chemoreceptors in female Pieris brassicae was studied employing a tip recording technique. Electrophysiological responses of tarsal taste hairs to eggwash solutions show a marked increase in frequency of spikes originating from only one sensory cell. This suggests that in foretarsal taste hairs females, apart from the glucosinolate cells also possess sense cells specifically sensitive to the oviposition deterring pheromone.Morphological studies by means of the scanning electron microscope revealed that the ovipositor of P. brassicae is provided with two groups of contact chemoreceptors. Electrophysiological recordings from these sensilla indicate the presence of at least three sensory cells, one of them being a mechanoreceptor. Stimulation with eggwash evokes a slight increase in spike frequency which cannot be ascribed to one particular sense cell. This indicates that abdominal taste hairs in some way may participate in the perception of the oviposition deterring pheromone. Responses to glucosinolates do not differ significantly from control stimulations.
Résumé Une technique d'enregistrement apical a été utilisée pour examiner la perception d'une phéromone dissuadant la ponte par les poils récepteurs chimiques de contact des femelles de Pieris brassicae. Les réponses électrophysiologiques des poils gustatifs des tarses en présence de solutions de rinçage d'oeufs présentent une fréquence marquée des potentiels d'action provenant principalement d'une cellule sensorielle. Ceci suggère que les poils gustatifs des tarses des pattes antérieures des femelles possèdent, en plus de cellules répondant aux glucosinolates, des cellules sensorielles sensibles spécialement à la phéromone dissuadant la ponte.Des études morphologiques au microscope à balayage révèlent que l'oviposition de P. brassicae est pourvu de deux groupes de chimiorécepteurs de contact. Des enregistrements électrophysiologiques de ces sensilles révèlent la présence d'au moins trois cellules sensorielles, l'une d'entre elles étant un mécanorécepteur. La stimulation avec la solution de rinçage des oeufs évoque un léger accroissement de la fréquence des potentiels d'action qui ne peut être attribué à une cellule sensorielle particulière. Ceci indique que les poils gustatifs abdominaux peuvent participer d'une certaine façon à la perception de la phéromone dissuadant la ponte. Les réponses aux glucosinolates ne diffèrent pas significativement des stimulations témoin.

In our previous article, Shear adhesive performance of leaf-cutting ant workers (Atta cephalotes), a technical error occurred when calculating shear adhesive performance divided by tarsal pad area of worker ants carrying leaves (Stark, A. Y., Davis, H. R., & Harrison, W. K. (2019). Biotropica51(4), 572–580). Shear adhesive performance of worker ants carrying leaves was mistakenly divided by the tarsal pad area of workers riding on leaves. This has slightly changed our results. After correcting for this error, there is now no statistically significant difference in shear adhesive performance divided by tarsal pad area of worker ants riding on leaves and those carrying leaves. Shear adhesive performance of these groups remains statistically different than soldiers, and our original results (shear adhesive performance of all three groups differ from one another) are consistent with the reported trend in the original article using true pad area for each individual (rather than estimated). We list below the pages and figures in the original article that this correction applies to. All authors agree with this change, apologize for their error, and appreciate the opportunity granted by the editors and publisher to make this correction. Our original conclusion, that there is variation in shear adhesive performance per unit area among worker roles of Atta cephalotes, is still supported by these corrected results.  相似文献

Two braconid parasitoids of cereal stemborers in eastern Africa, Cotesia sesamiae and Cotesia flavipes, have been shown to display a similar hierarchy of behavioural events during host recognition and acceptance. In order to understand the mechanisms underlying host recognition and acceptance, the morphology of antennal sensilla on the last antennomeres, on the ovipositor, and on the fifth tarsomere and pretarsus of the prothoracic legs tarsi were studied using scanning electron microscopy followed by selective silver nitrate staining. It appeared that female C. sesamiae and C. flavipes shared the same types and distribution of sensory receptors, which enable them to detect volatiles and contact chemical stimuli from their hosts. In both parasitoids, four types of sensilla were identified on the three terminal antennomeres: (i) non-porous sensilla trichodea likely to be involved in mechanoreception, (ii) uniporous sensilla chaetica with porous tips that have gustatory functions, (iii) multiporous sensilla placodea, which are likely to have olfactory function, and (iv) sensilla coeloconica known to have thermo-hygroreceptive function. The tarsi of both parasitoids possessed a few uniporous sensilla chaetica with porous tips, which may have gustatory functions. The distal end of the ovipositor bore numerous dome-shaped sensilla. However, there were no sensilla coeloconica or styloconica, known to have gustatory function in other parasitoid species, on the ovipositors of the two braconid wasps.  相似文献

The chemosensilla on the tarsi of Locusta migratoria were mapped using light microscopy, as well as scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Only chemosensilla chaetica were found on the tarsi. On the basis of their ultrastructure, these can be grouped into three main subtypes: short, long, and sunken sensilla chaetica. Short sensilla chaetica can be further divided into two groups containing 6 or 7 neurons. Long sensilla chaetica are mainly located on the lateral surface of the tarsi. Short sensilla chaetica were mainly found on the dorsal surface of the tarsi. Sunken sensilla chaetica were only found on the ventral surface, such as the pulvilli and arolium. Immunocytochemical localization of chemosensory protein (CSP) was performed on ultrathin sections of chemosensilla on tarsi. The antiserum against LmigCSP‐II intensively labeled all three types of sensilla chaetica. Gold granules were concentrated in the outer sensillum lymph surrounding the dendrite sheath, while the inner sensillum lymph containing dendrite branches was never labeled.
