To avoid negative impacts on food production, novel non-food biofuel feedstocks need to be identified and utilised. One option is to utilise marine biomass, notably fast-growing, large marine ‘plants’ such as the macroalgal kelps. This paper reports on the changing composition of Laminaria digitata throughout it growth cycle as determined by new technologies. The potential of Laminaria sp. as a feedstock for biofuel production and future biorefining possibilities was assessed through proximate and ultimate analysis, initial pyrolysis rates using thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), metals content and pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.Samples harvested in March contained the lowest proportion of carbohydrate and the highest ash and alkali metal content, whereas samples harvested in July contained the highest proportions of carbohydrate, lowest alkali metals and ash content. July was therefore considered the most suitable month for harvesting kelp biomass for thermochemical conversion to biofuels. 相似文献

Abstract The natural product cyanobacterin has been shown to be toxic to most cyanobacteria at a concentration of approx. 5 μM. We demonstrate here that cyanobacterin will also inhibit the growth of most eukaryotic algae at a similar concentration. Some algae, such as Euglena gracilis , are resistant because they are able to maintain themselves by heterotrophic nutrition. Others, such as Chlamydomonas reinhardtii , can apparently induce a detoxification mechanism to maintain photosynthesis in the presence of low concentrations of the inhibitor. Fuel oils from Euphorbs and other plants. The increasing energy costs of finding petroleum, together with the sure knowledge that its supply is finite, has prompted us to seek other sources of liquid hydrocarbon for both fuel and material. We have turned to annually renewable plant sources such as seed oils, an obvious source, with palm oil as the most productive. Sugar cane used to produce ethanol is another fuel source already in use.
We have examined non-food plants which can be grown on marginal soil for their productivity, particularly the genus Euphorbia. All species of this genus produce a latex which can be converted into useful fuel and other material, including precursors for what might be a valuable anti-tumor agent. Euphorbias and other similar plants require repeated planting and harvesting of the entire plant, which constitutes a drain on the soil. Trees can be long-term sources for hydrocarbon-like materials with a single planting. Examples are: the genus Copaifera which can be tapped for sesquiterpenes, the genus Pittosporum which bears fruits rich in terpenes and can be harvested annually. Finally, there are algae whose oil productivity is already of interest.
It seems possible to modify genetically the terpene biosynthetic pathways in plants to improve both the quality and quantity of the oils produced from them. 相似文献

Summary A short-term experiment was conducted to examine the relationships among the branching coral Porites porites, algal epibionts, and a facultative crab associate Mithrax sculptus in Belize, Central America. Initial field observations suggested that coral colonies supporting resident crabs generally had lower algal cover than colonies without crabs. The hypothesis was tested that Mithrax significantly depresses host coral algal cover and thereby indirectly affects host survivorship and growth. Crab accessibility to an array of coral colonies, similarly covered with algal epibionts, was manipulated in three treatments. Results strongly support the hypothesis, with significant differences in algal cover (primarily Dictyota spp.) noted among treatments after only one month. Caged heads with crabs included and uncaged natural controls allowing crabs free access averaged less than 10% cover, whereas mean algal cover exceeded 75% where crabs were excluded. The uncaged treatment, in which crabs were allowed free access to Porites heads was not significantly different from the crab inclusion treatment. Collectively, these results demonstrate that under natural conditions, crabs can have pronounced effects on host corals by reducing fouling algal epibionts. Furthermore, these facultative coral associates may have more important, albeit localized effects on Caribbean corals than has been suggested previously. 相似文献

The response of soil exchangeable sodium percentage levels to nitrate reductase activity, nitrite reductase activity, free proline, DNA, RNA, chlorophyll a and b contents and yield components in lentil (Lens esculenta Moench)cv. PL 406 was studied in a replicated pot experiment. All the biochemical observations were recorded at four growth stages i.e. 30, 60, 90 and 120 days after sowing (DAS). Germination occurred up to exhangeable sodium percentage of 30, but plants survived only up to 25. With increasing exchangeable sodium percentage, there was a continuous decrease in chlorophyll a and b content, nitrate and nitrite reductase enzyme activities and DNA and RNA content. Increasing level of sodicity enhanced the free proline content up to 60 DAS, after which values fell.Number of pods per plant, 1000 grain weight and grain yield were significantly reduced with increasing level of sodicity, but the number of grains per pod was not affected. 相似文献

Kinetic parameters of nitrogen mineralization rates of leguminous crops incorporated into soil 总被引:6,自引:1,他引:5
Summary Fresh leguminous plant residues were incorporated into soil columns and incubated at 23°C for up to 20 weeks. The N released from specific fractions (foliage, stems, and roots) of each residue were monitored at specific time intervals. Relationships between organic carbon, total nitrogen, CN ratio, lipids, and lignin content of the plant materials and the cumulative amount of N mineralized in soil were investigated. Statistical analyses indicated that the rates of N mineralized were not significantly correlated with the organic C nor lipid content of the residues. However, the cumulative amount of N released was significantly correlated with the total N content of the plant material (r=0.93***). The percentage of organic N of the legumes mineralized in soil ranged from 15.9 to 76.0%. The relationship between the percentage of N released and the CN ratio of the plant material showed an inverse cuvilinear response (r= 0.88***). It was also evident that the composition of lignin in the residue influenced N mine-ralization rates of the leguminous organs incorporated into soil.There was a curvilinear relationship between the cumulative amount of N released from the residues and time of incubation. Nitrogen mineralization rates were described by first-order kinetics to estimate the N mineralization potential (N0), mineralization rate constant (k), and the time of incubation required to mineralize one-half of N0 (t1/2). The kinetic parameters were calculated by both the linear least squares (LLS) and nonlinear least squares (NLLS) transformations. The N0 values among the crop residues varied from –35 to 510 g Ng–1 soil. Statistical analyses revealed that the N0 values obtained by both LLS and NLLS methods were significantly correlated (r=0.93***). The mineralization rate constants (k) of the residues ranged from 0.045 to 0.325 week–1. The time of incubation required to mineralize one-half the nitrogen mineralization potential (t1/2) of the legumes incorporated into soil ranged from 2.1 to 15.4 weeks. 相似文献
