The Grapsidae and Ocypodidae (Decapoda: Brachyura) of Tanzania   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Twenty-nine species of the Grapsidae and 15 species of the Ocypodidae were collected from the littoral zone in the area around Dar es Salaam. Nine species of Grapsidae and three of Ocypodidae were new records for the East African area, bringing the total of recorded species for the region to 35 and 26 respectively. The distribution of these crabs indicates a very limited endemism in the western Indian Ocean, with the majority of species forming an attenuated extension of the abundant Indo/West Pacific brachyuran fauna.
The habitat preference of each species is described. Within each subfamily there is a relative uniformity in general habitat preference, mode of life and manner of feeding. The species of each subfamily are then separated by substrate choice and preferred level on the shore. The greatest numbers of species occur in the most diverse habitats—the creek mangrove, the coastal mangrove and the reef flat.  相似文献

Sesarmid crabs dominate Indo West-Pacific mangroves, and consume large amounts of mangrove litter. This is surprising, since mangrove leaves have high tannin contents and C/N ratios that far exceed 17, normally taken as the maximum for sustainable animal nutrition. This paradox has led to the hitherto untested hypothesis that crabs let leaves age in burrows before consumption, thereby reducing tannin content and C/N ratio. We excavated burrows of Neosarmatium meinerti within high-shore Avicennia marina mangroves, and investigated whether burrow leaves had C, N or C/N values significantly different from those of senescent leaves. Leaves were found in <45% of burrows, mostly only as small fragments, and N concentrations and C/N ratios of burrow leaves never varied significantly from senescent leaves. The leaf-ageing hypothesis was therefore not supported. In the field N. meinerti and Sesarma guttatum fed on sediment in 76% and 66-69% of observations, respectively, and on leaves in <10% of observations. Sediments from two A. marina mangroves had a mean C/N ratio of 19.6. Our results, and the literature, show that mangrove leaves are unlikely to fulfil the N requirements of crabs, whether or not leaf ageing takes place. Sediment detritus could be a richer source of N, as shown by lower C/N ratios and regular ingestion by crabs. By fragmenting leaves crabs may be elevating the nutritional quality of the substrate detritus.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to determine the abundance of crabs inmangrove communities along a latitudinal gradient along the eastern coastof Africa from 4°S to 32°S. Surveys were made atMombasa (Kenya), Zanzibar (Tanzania), Maputo (Mozambique) and in theTranskei (South Africa). Crabs were estimated at three designated levelsin the mangroves by visual census using a common protocol, and numberswere converted to biomass.Even after standardising the selection of sites and methods of censusthere was still extensive variability in the data, emphasising the complexheterogeneity of mangrove ecosystems. Lunar phase (full versus new moonsprings) did not have a consistent effect on results, but shore height hadseveral effects. Total crab biomass was similar in the two lower shore strataexamined, but about twice as high at the top-Avicennia level. Theratio of grapsid biomass:ocypodid biomass also changed with height: fromnear unity in the lower mangrove, to 0.14 in the middle strata, but to 15at the top. There was no consistent latitudinal trend in total crab numbers, but totalcrab biomass increased from north to south. In addition there was aconsistent and marked change in the grapsid biomass:ocypodid biomassratio: this swung from 0.65 at Mombasa to 6.8 in the Transkei. This hasimplications for the transfer of primary production through the food chain. Grapsids are important macrophagous feeders on the leaves and other partsof mangroves, whereas ocypodids are microphagous deposit feeders.  相似文献

Developments during the past 20 years are reviewed for four aspects of crustacean growth. These are the hormonal control of moulting, the effects of external factors on growth rate, the patterns of growth and the determination of age. Hormonal control. The nature and structure of Moult Inhibiting Hormone has been determined, though the mechanism by which it inhibits crustecdysone production is still unclear. A role in moult control by Crustacean Hyperglycaemic Hormone has been demonstrated, but needs clarification. Methyl farnesoate, a juvenile hormone like substance, occurs in Crustacea: however, a clear function as a juvenile hormone has yet to be shown. External factors. The effect of increased temperature in reducing moult increments is supported by further data. Reduced food supply causes smaller moult increments and longer intermoult periods: the latter effect is generally proportionately greater. A role for CHH in this process is hypothesised. Patterns of growth. Little advance has occurred in understanding the rationale for the diversity of growth patterns. Computer modelling offers promise, but is constrained by lack of data on natural mortality for validation. Determination of age. The basic methods available remain size frequency analysis and tagging programmes. There have been advances in technology and methods of analysis, but no major breakthrough. Novel methods include radionuclide ratios (expensive, complex and give only duration of current intermoult), lipofuschin pigment assay (promising, but needs further validation), and annular structures in the infra-cerebral organ (still very speculative).  相似文献

Summary When Agrobacterium rhizogenes transformed root cultures of Lotus corniculatus were treated with glutathione, isoflavan phytoalexins accumulated in both tissue and culture medium. This accumulation of phytoalexins was preceded by a transient increase in the activity of phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL). Elicitation of PAL occurred throughout the growth curve of Lotus hairy roots and in different sectors of transformed root material.  相似文献

Eggs of the shore crab, Carcinus maenas, were reared in the laboratory both attached to and in isolation from the female. With continuous agitation the isolated eggs showed better survival and faster embryonic development than attached eggs under comparable conditions. Embryonic development was successful at temperatures from 11 to 25°C. and for attached eggs the development time decreased with temperature according to the equation: D = 20326 (T + 3.3)?2.09. At all temperatures development was slower than for a comparable study at Plymouth by Wear [8]. Isolated eggs were reared under a wide range of salinities, and appreciable survival beyond the prezoea occurred from 26‰ to 39‰.  相似文献

Insect emergence from three different sections of a small mountain brook in Germany was studied: a free-flowing section (`brook'), a section impounded by beavers (`beaver pond') and a beaver dam. The three sections had very different faunas with that of the dam being more similar to that of the brook than that of the pond. The heterogeneity of the fauna was greatest in the dam and lowest in the pond. Median emergence density in the dam was 443 specimens m–2 d–1. This was 3.2 times higher than median emergence density in the brook section and 5.5 times higher than median emergence density in the pond section. In particular, the density of emerging Trichoptera (especially filter-feeding species) was increased. Mean annual number of emerging EPTC species was 32.3/trap (779 cm2 ground area) in the dam, 18.4/trap in the brook and 11.0/trap in the pond. Emerging biomass was highest in the dam (18.0 – 26.7 g m–2 yr–1; 5.0 times higher than in the free flowing section and 5.4 times higher than in the pond section). The composition of a recently broken beaver dam is described by measuring all pieces of wood used in building the dam and analysing sediment samples. The dam consisted of a framework of wood pieces almost entirely of a diameter <5 cm, in which cavities are partly filled with fine sediment (mean organic content = 20%). The `inner surface' of the dam was 2.09 times higher than the dam's ground area and 1.63 times higher than the dam's surface. Beavers, therefore, significantly increase the heterogeneity of faunal composition and productivity of small brooks.  相似文献

It is critical for our knowledge of biodiversity and ecosystem processes to understand how individual species contribute to ecosystem processes and how these contributions vary in space and time. We used a manipulative field experiment in five locations over 17° of latitude [from southern Portugal to the Isle of Man (British Isles)] to determine the relative response of rocky intertidal algal assemblages released from control by the grazing of limpets. Response ratios showed that when limpets were removed there was a trend of effects from north to south. In the north, grazing had a strong effect on algal assemblages, but removing grazers reduced spatial variability in assemblages. In the south, the effect of limpet grazing was far weaker and removal of grazers had a much reduced impact on spatial variability. Here we show a clear trophic control of an ecosystem in that grazing by limpets not only determines macroalgal abundance overall but also modifies ecosystem stability via variability in cover of algae.  相似文献

The spider crabs Inachus dorsettensis (Pennant) and Hyas coarctatus Leach are widespread in subtidal areas of muddy sand or gravel around western Europe. Both species have a life cycle with an obligatory planktonic larval phase of several weeks, which might be expected to cause widespread larval dispersal and consequent genetic homogeneity over considerable distances. However, earlier work on both taxa has indicated differences in growth pattern between populations separated by tens of kilometres. This study was undertaken to determine whether these differences were purely environmental or whether, despite the short distances involved, differences may have a genetic basis. A study of gene frequencies, as indicated by allozymes in samples of adults collected off the Isle of Man (northern Irish Sea), indicates significant genetic differentiation between populations over a geographical distance of only about 40 km in both Inachus dorsettensis ( = 0.086 ± 0.048) and Hyas coarctatus ( = 0.023 ± 0.017). Variability measures differed between species, showing I. dorsettensis to have a mean number of alleles per locus of 2.5–2.6 and a range of gene diversity of 0.216–0.241, while H. coarctatus showed lower values of mean number of alleles (1.9–2.0) and a range of gene diversity from 0.122 to 0.124. Given the high expected larval mobility of the two species the results are most surprising. Possible explanations are discussed in relation to population discontinuities and patterns of larval drift.  相似文献
