Ooencyrtus nezarae Ishii (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) was reared on eggs ofRiptortus clavatus (Thunberg) (Heteroptera: Alydidae) at various temperatures under long-day (L16:D8) or short-day (L10:D14) conditions. There was no diapause during egg, larval or pupal stages under any set of conditions examined. However, at 15°C under short-day conditions, vitellogenesis was arrested in all adult females and they entered diapause. At 15°C under long-day conditions, or at 20°C under short-day conditions, some adult females entered diapause. Under the latter set of conditions, the adult females laid eggs but they laid fewer eggs than under long-day conditions, Even at 25°C, under short-day conditions, adult females laid fewer eggs than under long-day conditions, and this low rate of oviposition was attributed to the retarded development of ovaries. Diapause adults reared at 15°C were more resistant to low temperature than nondiapause adults reared at 25°C.  相似文献

Wrasse used as cleaner fish with farmed Atlantic salmon Salmo salar can be subjected to large and rapid temperature and salinity fluctuations in late autumn and early winter, when summer-warmed surface water is affected by early snowmelt episodes. Because of their containment in sea cages, wrasse which are essentially acclimated to summer temperatures may be rapidly exposed to winter conditions. Short-term tolerance of low temperature and low salinity by three species of wrasse, goldsinny Ctenolabrus rupestris rock cook Centrolabrus exoletus corkwing Crenilabrus melops caught during the summer, and winter-caught corkwing, was investigated. A 3–day period at 30 or 32‰ salinity and temperature 8, 6 or 4° C (for summer-caught fish; 4° C only for winter-caught) was followed by a decline in salinity to 24, 16 or 8‰ over c. 36 h, followed by a further 24 h at these salinities held constant, at each of the three temperatures. Controls in 30 or 32‰ were maintained at 8, 6 or 4° C. Mortality of summer-caught corkwing and rock cook was high at 4° C, whereas the influence of salinity on mortality was small. Mortality of goldsinny was low or zero in all treatments. Surviving corkwing and rock cook after 3 days at 4° C and 32‰ salinity had elevated plasma osmolality: in summer-caught corkwing, plasma [Cl°] and [Na+] were high, whereas in rock cook only [Na+] was high. Haematocrit was low in summer-caught corkwing, high in rock cook. In survivors of all three species at the end of the experiment, values of all these parameters were comparable with those of fish at the beginning of the experiment, except that survivors at low salinity (8, 16‰) had low plasma osmolality, at all temperatures, and in surviving rock cook in these treatments haematocrit was high and plasma [Cl?] was low. Winter-caught corkwing had higher osmolality, [Na+] and [Cl?] than summer-caught corkwing; there was no difference in haematocrit. Survival of wintercaught corkwing exposed to four salinities at 4° C was much higher than that of summercaught corkwing under the same conditions. Little change in blood physiology was recorded for winter-caught corkwing, with only fish subjected to 8‰ and 4° C showing signs of osmoregulatory stress. The interspecific and seasonal differences in survival and blood physiology at low temperature and low salinity are discussed in relation to wrasse survival over winter, both in the field and in salmon farms.  相似文献

A new strain of the parasitoid Trichogramma pretiosum, was collected in Rio Verde County, State of Goiás, Central Brazil, and designated as T. pretiosum RV. This strain was then found to be the most effective one among several different strains of T. pretiosum tested in a parasitoid selection assay. Therefore, its biological characteristics and thermal requirements were studied, aiming at allowing its multiplication under controlled environmental conditions in the laboratory. The parasitoid was reared on eggs of Pseudoplusia includens and Anticarsia gemmatalis at different constant temperatures within an 18–32 °C temperature range. The number of annual generations of the parasitoid was also estimated at those temperatures. Results have shown that T. pretiosum RV developmental time, from egg to adult, was influenced by all temperatures tested within the range, varying from 6.8 to 20.3 days and 6.0 to 17.0 days on eggs of P. includens and A. gemmatalis, respectively. The emergence of T. pretiosum RV from eggs of A. gemmatalis was higher than 94% at all temperatures tested. When this variable was evaluated on eggs of P. includens, however, the figures were higher than that within the 18–30 °C range (more than 98%), and were also statistically higher than the emergence observed at 32 °C (90.2%). The sex ratio of the parasitoids emerged from eggs of A. gemmatalis decreased from 0.55 to 0.29 at 18–32 °C, respectively. However, for those emerged from eggs of P. includens, the sex ratio was similar (0.73, 0.72 and 0.71) at 20, 28 and 32 °C, respectively. The lower temperature threshold (Tb) and thermal constant (K) were 10.65 °C and 151.25 degree-days when the parasitoid was reared on eggs of P. includens; and 11.64 °C and 127.60 degree-days when reared on eggs of A. gemmatalis. The number of generations per month increased from 1.45 to 4.23 and from 1.49 to 4.79 when the parasitoid was reared on eggs of P. includens and A. gemmatalis, respectively, following the increases in the temperature.  相似文献

Females of the migrant skipper, Parnara guttata guttata, that are reared under lower temperatures lay smaller eggs. The adaptive significance of egg size plasticity in response to temperature is unknown in this species. We suggest, based on the following experimental results, that P. g. guttata uses temperature as an indirect cue to predict the host condition (leaf toughness) of the next generation. First, larvae were reared under the typical conditions of temperature and photoperiod experienced during the immature stages in the first, second, and overwintering (third) generations (LD 16:8 at 25°C, LD 14:10 at 25°C and LD 14:10 at 20°C). Females reared under LD14:10 at 20°C produced more, smaller eggs than those reared under LD14:10 and LD16:8 at 25°C. Secondly, survival rates of first instar larvae derived from females reared under the three photoperiod/temperature treatments were measured on young soft rice leaves (soft), or tough, old rice leaves (tough). Survival rates of hatchlings reared on soft and tough leaves did not differ when females were reared under LD16:8 and LD14:10 at 25°C. However, hatchling survival was significantly higher on soft than on tough leaves when females were reared under LD14:10 at 20°C. Thirdly, we found that egg size plasticity in response to temperature in P. g. guttata may be a threshold response. Temperatures below 20°C experienced during the immature stages may be effective for production of smaller and more eggs in the overwintering generation of P. g. guttata.  相似文献

Females of the estuarine mud crab, Macrophthalmus hirtipes (Jacquinot, 1853) (Ocypodidae) carrying newly-deposited eggs were maintained in salinities of 11‰, 18‰, and 36‰ at 10°C. In 11‰ salinity eggs swelled more than in the other salinities; embryonic development was retarded; and eggs did not hatch. In 18‰ and 36‰, rates of development were generally similar and successful hatching occurred after approximately 75 days. However, late-stage eggs in 18‰ were significantly (P<0.001) larger than those in 36‰, even though initial egg volumes were the same. Zoeae were morphologically similar, except that the dorsal spine was significantly (P<0.001) longer in 36‰ compared with 18‰.  相似文献

Chemically mediated crowding effect on induction of diapause egg production in the calanoid copepod Eurytemora affinis was investigated. Two types of eggs, i.e. subitaneous and diapause eggs, produced by females that were reared in crowded culture conditions or the water from crowded culture under excess food supply were examined. 2.3% of the females that were reared at a population density of 5 or 6 animals per 10 ml of filtered lake water (FLW) produced diapause eggs. Females that were reared individually in 2-ml containers with FLW did not produce diapause eggs while 72.7% of females that were individually reared in 2-ml containers, but with water from a crowded culture (500 ind. l–1, culture medium was changed once a week), produced diapause eggs. These results demonstrate that accumulation of their own metabolic products in the medium induces diapause egg production by E. affinis.  相似文献

The mirid bug Macrolophus caliginosus is commercially reared on eggs of Ephestia kuehniella, constituting an effective but expensive factitious food. Artificial diets can decrease the rearing costs of this natural enemy, but developing and evaluating an artificial diet is a very time-consuming activity. In the current study, development and reproduction of M. caliginosus on two artificial diets based on egg yolk were investigated. The artificial diets resulted in longer development and lower adult weights, but survival was comparable with that of control insects fed E. kuehniella eggs. Reproductive potential of the predator reared on factitious and artificial foods was assessed using a dissection method. The influence of nymphal food on fecundity was less important than that of adult food. Adults fed E. kuehniella eggs had a preoviposition period of about 4 days, whereas adults offered only plant material started laying eggs about 7 days after emergence. Ovarian scores at day 7 were higher for females fed E. kuehniella eggs than for those given access only to a tobacco leaf. Ovarian scores were not significantly affected by mating status. In a final test, a parallel comparison of two methods for assessing reproductive response to diet was made. Here, adult couples were offered one of four diets: E. kuehniella eggs, one of two artificial diets or no food. Half of the females were dissected and the other half was held for determining lifetime oviposition. Females fed E. kuehniella eggs had superior ovarian scores and laid more eggs than those fed either artificial diet or those given no extra food. A good correlation (r = 0.97) was obtained between ovarian scores and oviposition data, indicating that dissecting females after 1 week provides a reliable estimate of fecundity as affected by diet quality. Rapid reproductive assessments as used in the current study will help to increase the rate of development of artificial diets and may contribute to more cost effective production methods for augmentative biological control agents.  相似文献

The effects of different temperatures and relative humidities (RHs) were tested on various reproductive parameters of Ornithodoros turicata, an argasid tick that inhabits gopher tortoise burrows in Florida, USA. The pre-oviposition, oviposition and incubation periods of the ticks decreased as temperature increased. These periods were also affected by the RH. The number of eggs oviposited was affected significantly by the combined effect of temperature and RH. Fewer eggs were laid by ticks in the 24°C regimes and the 27°C/95%RH regime compared to those in the other temperature/RH groups. There was an inverse relationship between the number of eggs oviposited and the percentage of hatched larvae that was correlated with the temperature and RH. Ticks reared at 27°C/90%RH and 30°C/90%RH laid more eggs than those reared in the other combinations of temperature and humidity but fewer larvae hatched from these eggs. The reproductive fitness index (RFI) values were highest in females held in the 24°C groups and the 30°C/95%RH group, although significantly more larvae hatched at the lower temperatures. The optimum reproductive conditions for O. turicata under laboratory conditions appear to be 24°C and 90–95%RH. While mating occurred at all temperatures, none of the females laid eggs at 22°C. The ticks may move preferentially to low temperatures when not feeding to remain above the critical equilibrium humidity and/or below the critical metabolic level necessary for prolonged survival. However, most female ticks oviposited after 45 days when moved to 27°C/95%RH. Ornithodoros turicata females may have a limited capability to delay oviposition until an optimal microenvironment for egg deposition can be located in the burrow.  相似文献

The zoophytophagous plant bug Nesidiocoris tenuis (Reuter) is increasingly used for biological control of various agricultural pests. Its native range includes Southern Europe, North Africa, Southern and South‐Eastern Asia, although only the Mediterranean strains have been studied experimentally. We investigated effects of temperature and photoperiod on nymphal survival and development, rate of female maturation and egg load in two strains of N. tenuis originating from temperate and subtropical regions of South‐Eastern Asia: the ‘Temperate strain’ (from Suwon, Republic of Korea, yearly average air temperature is 13.3°C) and the ‘Subtropical strain’ (from Miyazaki, Japan, yearly average air temperature is 18.2°C). Nymphs and adults were reared on tomato leaflets and fed with eggs of the grain moth Sitotroga cerealella under four temperatures (15, 20, 25 and 30°C) and three photoperiods (10, 12 and 14 h of light per day). In spite of long‐term (40–50 generations) rearing under constant laboratory conditions, the studied strains still show a correlation between thermotolerance indices and climate at origin. In particular, at the low temperature of 15°C, survival of nymphs of the Temperate strain was double that of the Subtropical strain, whereas at the higher tested temperatures, survival of the Subtropical strain was not significantly different or even was higher than that of the Temperate strain. The duration of nymphal development in the Temperate strain was significantly shorter than that in the Subtropical strain at 15–25°C, but not at 30°C. In both strains, nymphal survival, duration of nymphal development and rate of female maturation were not significantly dependent on photoperiod, and diapause was not observed under any conditions tested. We conclude that the Subtropical strain of N. tenuis is better adapted to high temperatures, whereas the Temperate strain is more promising for application in greenhouses at medium and low temperatures.  相似文献

Metaseiulus occidentalis females from the carbaryl-organophosphate-sulfur resistant strain (COS) lived longer (25.3 days versus 19.7 days), had a higher total fecundity (43.8 eggs female–1 versus 33.6 eggs female–1) and a higher daily fecundity rate (2.4 eggs female–1 day–1 versus 2.0 eggs female–1 day–1), and exhibited a higher intrinsic rate of increase (0.243 individuals female–1 day–1 versus 0.182 individuals female–1 day–1) and shorter generation time (13.9 days versus 17.0 days), at 24–28°C, 47–56%rh under continuous fluorescent light, when reared on a diet of 0–48-h-old eggs rather than a diet of mixed actives ofTetranychus pacificus McGregor on bean leaf disks. The sexratio of the progeny was female-biased for both diets, 2.1 females to 1 male forM. occidentalis reared on eggs and 2.0:1 : forM. occidentalis reared on mixed actives, suggesting that diet influences sex-ratio in some unknown way. There was no significant difference in oviposition rates for repeatedly-mated and once-matedM. occidentalis females reared on a diet of younger (0–24-h old) eggs compared to a diet of older (72–96-h old) eggs ofT. pacificus. The COS strain ofM. occidentalis exhibited life-table parameters comparable to the other strains reported in the literature, suggesting that the reproductive attributes of this acarine predator were not reduced as a result of artificial laboratory selection. Diet, a biotic factor, produced substantial differences in life-table parameters, suggesting that this factor can influence conclusions regarding the potential efficacy of biological control agents.  相似文献

Summary Eggs of Ecdyonurus picteti from the Herrnalmbach and Seebach, and E. venosus and Rhithrogena cf. hybrida from the Seebach were fertilized artificially and kept at fluctuating temperatures (range 2.8°–18.1° C) in the laboratory. The percentage of eggs that hatched at each sinusoidal temperature cycle ranged from 0 to 49% and values were similar to those obtained for eggs reared under constant temperature conditions. The hatching time (days after fertilization for 10, 50% and 90% of the eggs to hatch) decreased with increasing temperature and the relationship between the two variables was well described by a powerlaw within the range 2.8°–18.1° C for E. venosus. A similar relationship has been found for the effect of constant temperature on the hatching time of eggs of E. venosus. It appears that the effect of temperature on the rate of change in the hatching time and the rate of development is approximately similar for both constant and fluctuating temperatures.  相似文献

Climate change is leading to altered temperature regimes which are impacting aquatic life, particularly for ectothermic fish. The impacts of environmental stress can be translated across generations through maternally derived glucocorticoids, leading to altered offspring phenotypes. Although these maternal stress effects are often considered negative, recent studies suggest this maternal stress signal may prepare offspring for a similarly stressful environment (environmental match). We applied the environmental match hypothesis to examine whether a prenatal stress signal can dampen the effects of elevated water temperatures on body size, condition, and survival during early development in Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha from Lake Ontario, Canada. We exposed fertilized eggs to prenatal exogenous egg cortisol (1,000 ng/ml cortisol or 0 ng/ml control) and then reared these dosed groups at temperatures indicative of current (+0°C) and future (+3°C) temperature conditions. Offspring reared in elevated temperatures were smaller and had a lower survival at the hatchling developmental stage. Overall, we found that our exogenous cortisol dose did not dampen effects of elevated rearing temperatures (environmental match) on body size or early survival. Instead, our eyed stage survival indicates that our prenatal cortisol dose may be detrimental, as cortisol‐dosed offspring raised in elevated temperatures had lower survival than cortisol‐dosed and control reared in current temperatures. Our results suggest that a maternal stress signal may not be able to ameliorate the effects of thermal stress during early development. However, we highlight the importance of interpreting the fitness impacts of maternal stress within an environmentally relevant context.  相似文献

Eggs, larvae, pupae and adults of the large narcissus fly (Merodon equestris) were reared at a series of constant temperatures between 9–24°C. Egg development required from 37 days at 9°C to 7 days at 21.5°C. The low-temperature threshold for development was 6.7°C. Larvae reared at 1424°C were fully-grown after 18 weeks, but it took much longer for such insects to pupate, and adult flies emerged only after about 45 weeks of development. Large narcissus flies enter diapause during the larval stage and overwinter as fully-fed larvae, forming pupae in the following spring. Post-winter pupation and pupal development took from 169 days at 10°C to 36 days at 21.5°C. Of this, pupal development required from 91 days at 10°C to 19 days at 21.5°C. The low-temperature threshold for post-winter pupation and pupal development was 7.1°C, and for pupal development alone, 7.2°C. Females maintained at or below 19°C laid few eggs, whereas some females kept at or above 21.5°C laid more than 100 eggs (mean 69 ± 36). Approximately 50% of females maintained at or above 21.5°C laid less than 10 eggs during their lifetime. The mean egg-laying time was 6 to 9 days. Although temperatures at or below 19°C inhibited mating, once a female had mated, such temperatures did not prevent oviposition.  相似文献

Early warning of egg hatching in pea moth (Cydia nigricana)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Female pea moths (Cydia nigricana) kept at 23 oC began to lay eggs 2–3 days after emergence, lived for 16–21 days and laid on average 71 eggs. Individuals kept in field cages lived for slightly longer and laid on average 91 eggs. About 85% of eggs were laid during the first 11 days of the oviposition period, usually in the late afternoon and early evening. The relationship between the rate of egg development and temperature was defined. The estimated developmental zero was 9-4 oC at constant temperatures and 8-5 oC at fluctuating temperatures. Above 28 oC mortality increased and above 31 oC development was apparently retarded. Development at constant temperatures took 6–16% longer than at fluctuating temperatures with the same mean. Estimates of hatching dates in the field made from temperature data recorded at several sites in and near a pea crop, and 8 km distant, were usually within a day of the observed date. In warm weather, estimated and observed dates usually coincided; in cooler weather hatching was 2–3 days later than expected. Hatching dates predicted from temperature data after only 80% of development had occurred were correct on 28 out of 36 occasions. An example is given to show how the method could be used eventually with a sex attractant trapping system to provide early warning of first hatching and spraying dates.  相似文献

Hatching experiments were carried out on a population of Brachionus plicatilis (Dor strain) resting eggs produced in batch laboratory cultures under controlled conditions and then stored for at least one month at 4 °C in the dark. Light was found to be obligatory for termination of dormancy. Over the temperature range of 10–30 °C (at 9.0‰ salinity), hatching was optimal (40–70%) at 10–15 °C and decreased linearly with the rise in incubation temperature. Resting eggs incubated over a salinity range of 9–40‰ (at 15 °C) showed optimal hatching at 16‰. Incubation of resting eggs in distilled water permitted normal embryonic development, but neonates died at eclosion. Presence of algae, Chlorella stigmatophora (0.5 × 106 cell ml?1), was found to aid hatching.  相似文献

Abstract

This study evaluated the effect of temperature on morphometric features of the egg during the embryonic development of the prawn Macrobrachium americanum and the relationship with hatching and the survival of the larvae. Berried females were grouped (n = 3) and reared at three different temperatures, 26, 29, and 33 °C, for which seven developmental stages were recognized. At each stage, the apical and sagittal diameters of the eggs were measured, the volume was calculated, and the weights were recorded. Additionally, the duration of embryonic development, hatching percentage, and larval survival were determined. At 29 and 33 °C, the eggs’ volume increased by 50%, but at 26 °C, the increase was 25%. Larvae from eggs incubated at 33 °C died one day after hatching. At 29 °C, larvae survived until Zoea VII. Larvae from eggs incubated at 26 °C died at the end of Zoea I. The number of days of embryonic development was 20.5 ± 1.5 (26 °C), 15 ± 1 (29 °C), and 12 ± 1 (33 °C). A temperature of 29 °C was the most favorable for embryonic development in M. americanum.  相似文献

Abstract

Larvae of Inopus rubriceps (Macquart) were reared from eggs originating from spring and autumn adult emergence periods (1975–78), under both insectary and field conditions. Rate of development appeared to depend largely on temperature. Autumn-hatched larvae showed little growth for the initial 6 months, but then grew rapidly until the end of summer. Spring-hatched larvae also grew rapidly over summer, but their development slowed over winter. Year-to-year differences were found in larval survival, weight gain, and rate of development, and in subsequent adult emergence. Pest status appeared to be related to the cumulative yearly heat budget. Overall, larval survival was higher and growth and development were more rapid in the insectary than under field conditions. A male-dominant sex ratio was demonstrated.  相似文献

In order to complete a holocycle of the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae, on a synthetic diet, the effects of dietary amino acid contents on development of sexuals were investigated. For this purpose, the aphids were reared on holidic diets for two to three generations at 20°C under a scotophase of 15 h per diem. Under these conditions, the production of males by the aphids on a synthetic diet was very much poorer than those reared on radish seedling. On reducing the amino acid concentration of the diet, the proportion of males produced was comparable to that produced by aphids fed on radish seedlings. The obtained males were smaller and survived longer than those reared on radish seedling. Under the long night photoperiod and on the synthetic diet with reduced amino acids, gynoparae and then oviparae were also obtained. The oviparae were mated with the males grown on the synthetic diet, and laid eggs. The eggs, however, did not turn dark in color, and perished. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The influence of host plant traits of five potato cultivars: Savalan, Agria, Morene, Kondor and Diamant on the population density of two-spotted spider mite (TSM) Tetranychus urticae Koch, and ovipositional preference, predation rate and life history parameters of its predator Orius minutus L. were studied under laboratory conditions (23 ± 1°C, 50 ± 5% RH and 14L:10D). The density of TSM adults on Savalan, Agria and Morene was significantly lower than on Kondor and Diamant. In both no-choice and free-choice experiments, the females of the predator laid more eggs on TSM-infested leaves of Savalan (6 eggs/leaf and 24 eggs/plant) than on Agria, Morene, Kondor and Diamant. In predation rate experiments, the females of O. minutus consumed more TSM on the infested leaves of Savalan (32 TSM/predator during 48 hours) than on Agria, Morene, Kondor and Diamant. In performance experiments, the predator nymphs developed faster when reared on TSM-infested leaves of Savalan (16 days) than on Kondor and Diamant. Moreover, the survival rate, from egg to adult, of O. minutus on TSM-infested leaves of Savalan (52.8%) was better than on Kondor and Diamant. The fecundity of O. minutus reared on TSM-infested leaves of Savalan (11.7 eggs/female) was significantly higher than on Agria, Morene, Kondor and Diamant. The intrinsic rate of natural increase and the population growth rate of O. minutus were highest when reared on TSM-infested leaves of Savalan (rm = 0.089 day?1 and λ = 1.094 day?1). These results suggest that using Savalan cultivar integrated with O. minutus could result in improved efficacy of this predator and lead to effective and more sustainable management of T. urticae in potato fields.  相似文献

This study examines the swimming speed in amictic females of Brachionus plicatilis in laboratory cultures. Five different stages were examined: recently hatched females, juveniles, adult non-ovigerous females, ovigerous females with 1 attached egg and ovigerous females with 2 attached eggs. We tested the speed at two temperatures, 15 °C and 25 °C, and two feeding conditions, presence and absence of microalgal cells. An automated motion analysis system was used to measure speed which was then video recorded. Swimming speed (μm s−1) increased with increasing body size. There was a slight decrease in the speed of adult females as the number of attached eggs increased. Swimming activity was higher at 25 °C than at 15 °C and in the absence of food than if microalgae were present. Average values under the different experimental conditions ranged between 500 μm s−1 for the recently hatched and fed females and 1500 μm s−1 for the adult non-ovigerous females in the absence of microalgae. Mass-specific swimming speed decreased with body mass increase.  相似文献
