The Indonesian island of Sulawesi harbors a highly endemic and diverse fauna sparking fascination since long before Wallace’s contemplation of biogeographical patterns in the region. Allopatric diversification driven by geological or climatic processes has been identified as the main mechanism shaping present faunal distribution on the island. There is both consensus and conflict among range patterns of terrestrial species pointing to the different effects of vicariant events on once co-distributed taxa. Tarsiers, small nocturnal primates with possible evidence of an Eocene fossil record on the Asian mainland, are at present exclusively found in insular Southeast Asia. Sulawesi is hotspot of tarsier diversity, whereby island colonization and subsequent radiation of this old endemic primate lineage remained largely enigmatic. To resolve the phylogeographic history of Sulawesi tarsiers we analyzed an island-wide sample for a set of five approved autosomal phylogenetic markers (ABCA1, ADORA3, AXIN1, RAG1, and TTR) and the paternally inherited SRY gene. We constructed ML and Bayesian phylogenetic trees and estimated divergence times between tarsier populations. We found that their arrival at the Proto-Sulawesi archipelago coincided with initial Miocene tectonic uplift and hypothesize that tarsiers dispersed over the region in distinct waves. Intra-island diversification was spurred by land emergence and a rapid succession of glacial cycles during the Plio-Pleistocene. Some tarsier range boundaries concur with spatial limits in other taxa backing the notion of centers of faunal endemism on Sulawesi. This congruence, however, has partially been superimposed by taxon-specific dispersal patterns. 相似文献

The constituents of attractiveness differ across the sexes. Many relevant traits are dimorphic, suggesting that they are the product of intersexual selection. However, direction of causality is generally difficult to determine, as aesthetic criteria can as readily result from, as cause, dimorphism. Women have proportionately smaller feet than men. Prior work on the role of foot size in attractiveness suggests an asymmetry across the sexes, as small feet enhance female appearance, yet average, rather than large, feet are preferred on men. Previous investigations employed crude stimuli and limited samples. Here, we report on multiple cross-cultural studies designed to overcome these limitations. With the exception of one rural society, we find that small foot size is preferred when judging women, yet no equivalent preference applies to men. Similarly, consonant with the thesis that a preference for youth underlies intersexual selection acting on women, we document an inverse relationship between foot size and perceived age. Examination of preferences regarding, and inferences from, feet viewed in isolation suggests different roles for proportionality and absolute size in judgments of female and male bodies. Although the majority of these results bolster the conclusion that pedal dimorphism is the product of intersexual selection, the picture is complicated by the reversal of the usual preference for small female feet found in one rural society. While possibly explicable in terms of greater emphasis on female economic productivity relative to beauty, the latter finding underscores the importance of employing diverse samples when exploring postulated evolved aesthetic preferences. 相似文献

Herein, this study reports high‐efficiency, low‐temperature ZnO based planar perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with state‐of‐the‐art performance. They are achieved via a strategy that combines dual‐functional self‐assembled monolayer (SAM) modification of ZnO electron accepting layers (EALs) with sequential deposition of perovskite active layers. The SAMs, constructed from newly synthesized molecules with high dipole moments, act both as excellent surface wetting control layers and as electric dipole layers for ZnO‐EALs. The insertion of SAMs improves the quality of PbI2 layers and final perovskite layers during sequential deposition, while charge extraction is enhanced via electric dipole effects. Leveraged by SAM modification, our low‐temperature ZnO based PSCs achieve an unprecedentedly high power conversion efficiency of 18.82% with a VOC of 1.13 V, a JSC of 21.72 mA cm?2, and a FF of 0.76. The strategy used in this study can be further developed to produce additional performance enhancements or fabrication temperature reductions. 相似文献

The Black Rat (Rattus rattus) spread out of Asia to become one of the world's worst agricultural and urban pests, and a reservoir or vector of numerous zoonotic diseases, including the devastating plague. Despite the global scale and inestimable cost of their impacts on both human livelihoods and natural ecosystems, little is known of the global genetic diversity of Black Rats, the timing and directions of their historical dispersals, and the risks associated with contemporary movements. We surveyed mitochondrial DNA of Black Rats collected across their global range as a first step towards obtaining an historical genetic perspective on this socioeconomically important group of rodents. We found a strong phylogeographic pattern with well-differentiated lineages of Black Rats native to South Asia, the Himalayan region, southern Indochina, and northern Indochina to East Asia, and a diversification that probably commenced in the early Middle Pleistocene. We also identified two other currently recognised species of Rattus as potential derivatives of a paraphyletic R. rattus. Three of the four phylogenetic lineage units within R. rattus show clear genetic signatures of major population expansion in prehistoric times, and the distribution of particular haplogroups mirrors archaeologically and historically documented patterns of human dispersal and trade. Commensalism clearly arose multiple times in R. rattus and in widely separated geographic regions, and this may account for apparent regionalism in their associated pathogens. Our findings represent an important step towards deeper understanding the complex and influential relationship that has developed between Black Rats and humans, and invite a thorough re-examination of host-pathogen associations among Black Rats. 相似文献

Secondary structure formation in four novel hybrid poly(acrylic acid)-b-poly(L-valine) (PAA-b-PLVAL) block copolymers, that is, PAA(40)-PLVAL(100), PAA(80)-PLVAL(100), PAA(80)-PLVAL(80), and PAA(80)-PLVAL(60), was investigated by circular dichroism. The formation of stable and well-defined beta-sheet structure in the PLVAL hydrophobic domains was observed for all the copolymers. At pH 5, PAA(80)-PLVAL(60) with the lowest PLVAL/PAA molar ratio possessed the lowest beta-sheet content of 12%, and it increased to 62% for PAA(40)-PLVAL(100) system. The beta-sheet formation in the block copolymers was controlled by both random PAA-PLVAL hydrogen bonds at low pH and electrostatic repulsive forces on the PAA segment at high pH; hence, the beta-sheet structure was most stable at intermediate pH. The length of PAA segments was critical in the beta-sheet solubilization and in providing sufficient shielding of the hydrophobic core from denaturing agents such as urea. 相似文献

On the basis of distinguishing characteristics of various genetic markers, pelage color, tail tuft, and vocalizations, we
describe a new species of the genus Tarsius Storr 1780. The new taxon Tarsius wallacei sp. nov. occupies a disjunct range in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. The two isolated populations differ significantly in body
size, but are alike in color, tail tuft dimensions, vocalizations, and genetic composition. Morphologically, the new species
is similar to other Sulawesi lowland tarsiers. In the field, it can be distinguished from its congeners via a characteristic
duet song and its yellow-brown pelage coloration and a copper-colored throat. Genetic analyses prove Y-chromosomal and mitochondrial
DNA sequences and also microsatellite allele frequencies to be absolutely diagnostic. 相似文献
