In order to better determine the currentstatus of desert pupfish populations (Cyprinodon macularius macularius) in the LowerColorado River Basin of Mexico, bimonthly fishsampling and habitat evaluations were carriedout from September 1996 to August 1997 in sixlocalities of Baja California and Sonora.Desert pupfish were collected using minnowseines and traps. Four sampling sites are inSonora, in shallow marginal habitats of theCiénega Santa Clara (Hunters' Camp, Outletof the Welton-Mohawk channel, El Doctor andFlor del Desierto) and two are in BajaCalifornia (Cerro Prieto and streams south ofCerro Prieto). The most abundant fish speciessampled was native desert pupfish (C.macularius, 59%) followed by sailfin molly(Poecilia latipinna, 19%), redbellytilapia (Tilapia cf. zilli, 10%) and western mosquito fish (Gambusiaaffinis, 7%). Significant temporalfluctuations in distribution and abundance ofdesert pupfish populations, as previouslyreported for these populations, was againdocumented. The main anthropogenic factorsaffecting distribution and abundance of desertpupfish populations in the Mexican portion ofthe Lower Colorado River Basin are progressivealteration of aquatic and riparian habitats, aswell as presence of exotic fishes that havecaused the displacement or elimination ofnative fish populations. Both habitat andpresence of the desert pupfish populations inthe study area are controlled by theperiodicity, quality and volume of dischargesinto the Mexican portion of the basin from theUnited States.  相似文献

In arid regions, spring-fed habitats are frequently the only year-round source of surface water and are essential habitats for aquatic organisms and primary water sources for terrestrial animals and human settlements. While these habitats have been relatively well-studied in some regions, those of the southern Sonoran Desert have received little attention. In 2008 and 2009, we documented the biodiversity of aquatic animals at 19 sites across three arid mountain ranges in Sonora, Mexico, characterized macrohabitat types, examined seasonal variation in aquatic invertebrate communities, and explored the effects of an exotic fish (tilapia) on native communities. We documented >220 aquatic animal species, including several new species and range extensions for others. Macrohabitat type (oasis, tinaja, riffle, and seep) was more important than geographic location in structuring aquatic invertebrate communities at the scale of our study area (~9,000 km2). We found little evidence of predictable seasonal variation in invertebrate communities, despite dramatic hurricane-induced flooding. Aquatic vertebrates were not diverse across the study region (4 amphibian species and 2 species each of fishes and reptiles), but were often locally abundant. Presence of non-native tilapia at one site was associated with reduced abundances of native leopard frogs and reduced richness and density of native aquatic invertebrates. The most pressing aquatic habitat conservation concerns in the region, as in other deserts, are groundwater withdrawal, unmanaged recreational visitation, and the introduction of exotic species. Spring-fed habitats around the world have been called hotspots of freshwater biodiversity, and those of the Sonoran Desert are no exception.  相似文献

Morphometric variation of 17 wild troutpopulations of the genus Oncorhynchusfrom northwestern Mexico was analyzed.We used 25 standardized morphometric characters following a box truss protocol. In thediscriminant function analysis (DFA) of theexamined specimens (n = 214), grouped bydrainage, the canonical root 1 explained 88.1%of the total variation. Sixteen linearcharacters allow distinguishing O. mykissnelsoni (Sierra San Pedro Mártir [SSPM])from O. chrysogaster and O. mykisssspp. (Sierra Madre Occidental [SMO]). Twodistinctive groups of populations wererecognized on the basis of the squaredMahalanobis' distances, one for the SSPM (O. m. nelsoni) and the other for the SMO. Thelatter group is divided into four subgroups:(1) O. chrysogaster (Río Fuerte andRío Culiacán) and O. mykiss ssp.(Río Piaxtla); (2) O. mykiss sspp.(Río San Lorenzo, Río Baluarte, andRío Acaponeta); (3) O. mykiss sspp.(Río Yaqui and Río Mayo); and (4) O. chrysogaster (Río Sinaloa). In the DFAamong populations within each taxon, thecanonical variable 1 accounted for 41.8% ofthe total variation for O. m. nelsoni,59.4% for O. chrysogaster, and 43.8%for O. m. sspp.  相似文献

The variation and composition of Mexican wild trout mitochondrial DNA haplotypes throughout northwestern Mexico was determined by means of polymerase chain reaction–restriction fragment polymorphism analysis (PCR–RFLP), of one region of mitochondrial DNA between cytochrome b and the D-loop. This analysis was based on 261 specimens taken in 12 basins and four hatcheries from northwestern Mexico. From 23 haplotypes, 15 wild trout haplotypes were identified and classified in four groups: (1) one restricted to Nelson’s trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss nelsoni), (2) four restricted to Río Mayo and RíoYaqui trout (O. mykiss sspp.), (3) six to Mexican golden trout (O. chrysogaster) with two subgroups, and (4) one exclusive to Río Piaxtla trout. Distributions of native haplotypes broadly overlap the distribution of non-native hatchery rainbow trout reflecting the historical management of introductions of exotic rainbow trout and the artificial transference of these trout among basins.  相似文献

To detect the presence of point mutations in a small section of the mutS homolog2 (MSH2) gene in both healthy and affected persons treated at the General Hospital of the State of Sonora, a 353 base pair section of the MSH2 gene was amplified and sequenced from six persons affected by hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer and from 19 healthy persons. The affected persons did not show the mutations reported in the scientific literature; however, six healthy persons were heterozygote and mutant-allele carriers. The heterozygote condition implies that carriers are candidates for the development of colorectal cancer. However, it is important to know the family medical history when investigating hereditary mutations.  相似文献
