Biosynthesis and in vitro translation of the major surfactant-associated protein from human lung

We have characterized a 32,000-36,000-dalton sialoglycoprotein group that is an integral component of the lipoprotein complex called pulmonary surfactant. Our results from the cell-free translation of human lung RNA show that this protein consists of two similarly-sized precursor components of about 29,000-31,000 daltons. Tunicamycin treatment of the lung tissue prevents formation of the normal protein and results in the accumulation of these precursor components which are also seen under normal conditions in very small amounts. Although in vitro translation in the presence of dog pancreatic microsomes suggests that a cleavable signal peptide sequence is present in these precursor molecules, it does not appear that this cleavage occurs in vivo.     

Regulation of glucose and maltose transport in strains ofSaccharomyces

Summary Growth of yeast cells on glucose resulted in complete inactivation of maltose transport and repression of the high affinity glucose transport system. When the cells were grown on maltose or subjected to substrate starvation, an increase in glucose and maltose transport was observed in both brewing and non-brewing yeast strains. The concentration of glucose employed in the growth medium was also observed to affect sugar transport activity. The higher the glucose concentration, the more pronounced the repressive effect. In addition, the time of growth of yeast on glucose or maltose also intermining the rate of sugar transport. These results are consistent with the repressive effect of glucose on the high affinity glucose and maltose transport systems.     

The posthatch physiology of the turkey poult--II. Hematology

Packed cell volume, total leukocytes, total erythrocytes, hemoglobin, mean cell volume and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration of the poult were analyzed daily for the first 10 days posthatch. Sexually dimorphic effects on hematological parameters were not apparent, but there was a sex X day interaction for all parameters except hemoglobin indicating that males were slower to develop/respond to critical stimuli. The study revealed a latency in production of erythrocytes and leukocytes in posthatch males and females which coincided temporally with early poult mortality.     

Isolation versus grouped housing in rats: Differential effects of low doses of heroin in the place preference paradigm

Male Long Evans rats were reared from weaning (21–23 days) either in isolation or in groups of four for 40 days. Animals were then individually introduced to a testing apparatus consisting of two distinct chambers. A modified place preference paradigm was used consisting of 3 phases: (1) An habituation phase (4 days) during which rats were allowed free access to the entire test apparatus for 15 min. periods daily; (2) A conditioning phase (4 days) during which rats were confined to their non-preferred side for 15 minutes each day immediately following subcutaneous injection of 0, 20, 40 and 80 μg/kg of heroin HCl; (3) A test phase (1 day) during which rats were again allowed free access to the testing chamber following injection of vehicle. The difference in time spent on the conditioned side during habituation and test periods was determined. The group-reared rats showed similar effects for all doses of heroin whereas the same magnitude of drug effect was attained only at the highest dose used in the isolated rats. This differential sensitivity to heroin in the place preference paradigm is discussed in terms of the modification of behavioral effects of opiates by environmental influences.
