Timers in Early Development of Sea Urchin Embryos   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
To elucidate the timing mechanisms in the early development of sea urchin embryos, we measured the times of initiation of the first four cleavages, of ciliary movement, of primary mesenchyme cell ingression, and of gastrulation at four temperatures ranging from 11 to 20°C. The times of cleavage and of initiation of ciliary movement showed similar temperature dependency, indicating that these events may be controlled by a common timer (the first timer). Although batches of eggs often showed variation in the period between fertilization and the first cleavage, their subsequent cleavages were more regular. This indicates that the first timer may not start at fertilization. The ingression of mesenchyme cells and the onset of gastrulation showed similar temperature dependency that was higher than that of other events, suggesting the existence of a second timer. Temperature shift experiments indicate that the second timer starts at the mid-blastula (the 8–9th cleavage) stage when divisions of blastomeres become asynchronous.  相似文献

Unilateral extirpation of the wing discs was performed on mid- and late-third instar larvae of Sarcophaga peregrina to investigate the regulation capacities of the thoracic discs. Out of 636 operated larvae, 175 became adult and all of them exhibited hemithoracic structures, lacking any adult structures in the operated side, which were normally produced from a wing disc. These findings suggest that the wing disc does not possess the capacity of bicentric regulation to produce the thoracic structures of the opposite side.  相似文献

Protoplasts of Daucus carota L. cultured in a synthetic liquid medium resumed cell division after about 4 days of cultivation. During this lag period, nucleic acid and protein showed only slight increases but the protoplasts commenced cell-wall regeneration soon after the removal of lytic enzymes. The originally spherical protoplasts became ellipsoidal before they underwent division. Radioactive glucose and myo-inositol were readily utilized by the protoplasts. Most of the radioactivity, however, appeared in extracellular polysaccharides and only a small portion was deposited in the regenerated wall. The sugar composition of new cell wall, as studies by chemical analysis and incorporation of labelled precursors, was shown to be considerably different from that of normal cell wall.  相似文献

In order to construct an anlageplan of the imaginal disc, various fragments of the wing disc from mature larvae of Sarcophaga peregrina were implanted into host larvae of the same age. The implants were metamorphosed with the host and the differentiated adult structures were analyzed.
On the basis of the results obtained from the transplanted disc fragments, a fate map of the wing disc was satisfactorily constructed.
The fate map of S. peregrina is similar to an earlier study of Drosophila , but the PAA, PWP, and AP are located in different positions from those of Drosophila .  相似文献

Pilot whales (Globicephala spp.) provide an interesting example of recently diverged oceanic species with a complex evolutionary history. The two species have wide but largely non‐overlapping ranges. Globicephala melas (long‐finned pilot whale; LFPW) has an antitropical distribution and is found in the cold‐temperate waters of the North Atlantic and Southern Hemisphere, whereas Globicephala macrorhynchus (short‐finned pilot whale; SFPW) has a circumglobal distribution and is found mainly in the tropics and subtropics. To investigate pilot whale evolution and biogeography, we analysed worldwide population structure using mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region sequences (up to 620 bp) from a variety of sources (LFPW = 643; SFPW = 150), including strandings in New Zealand and Tasmania, and whale‐meat products purchased on the markets of Japan and Korea. Phylogenetic reconstructions failed to support a reciprocal monophyly of the two species, despite six diagnostic substitutions, possibly because of incomplete lineage sorting or inadequate phylogenetic information. Both species had low haplotype and nucleotide diversity compared to other abundant widespread cetaceans (LFPW, π = 0.35%; SFPW, π = 0.87%) but showed strong mtDNA differentiation between oceanic basins. Strong levels of structuring were also found at the regional level. In LFPW, phylogeographic patterns were suggestive either of a recent demographic expansion or selective sweep acting on the mtDNA. For SFPW, the waters around Japan appear to represent a centre of diversity, with two genetically‐distinct forms, as well as a third population of unknown origin. The presence of multiple unique haplotypes among SFPW from South Japan, together with previously documented morphological and ecological differences, suggests that the southern form represents a distinct subspecies and/or evolutionary significant unit. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 98 , 729–744.  相似文献

1. Understanding mechanisms behind the distribution of organisms along a gradient of hydrological connectivity is crucial for sustainable management of river–floodplain systems. We tested the hypothesis that frequency of flood pulses exerts a direct influence on the distribution of freshwater mussels (Unionoida) by creating a local environment that limits their fitness. 2. Multiscale habitat analyses combined with transplant‐rearing experiments were carried out with a focus on abundance, presence/absence, survival rates and growth rates of mussels. Sixty‐nine floodplain waterbodies (FWBs) were surveyed within a 15‐km lowland segment of the Kiso River in Japan. 3. The abundance of mussels significantly increased with increased frequency of inundation associated with flood pulses at the among‐FWB scale, while the probability of occurrence of mussels was negatively predicted by the amount of benthic organic matter at the within‐FWB scale. 4. Field‐rearing experiments showed that survival rates were low and growth rates nearly zero in infrequently inundated FWBs (these FWBs had no naturally occurring resident mussels). In such FWBs, hypoxia (DO < 2 mg L?1) was frequently observed near the bottom when temperature was optimal for mussel growth (>15 °C). 5. These findings demonstrated that flood pulse frequency was the most important factor in determining mussel distribution in FWBs because it directly limits mussels’ fitness by mediating local environmental factors, possibly dissolved oxygen (DO) levels. Successful restoration efforts for mussel habitat conservation should focus on processes that lead to improved local conditions.  相似文献
