Measurement of Wisteria floribunda agglutinin-positive human Mac-2 binding protein (WFA+-M2BP) in serum was recently shown to be a noninvasive method to assess liver fibrosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the utility of serum WFA+-M2BP values to predict the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients who achieved a sustained virological response (SVR) by interferon treatment. For this purpose, we retrospectively analyzed 238 patients with SVR who were treated with interferon in our department. Serum WFA+-M2BP values were measured at pre-treatment (pre-Tx), post-treatment (24 weeks after completion of interferon; post-Tx), the time of HCC diagnosis, and the last clinical visit. Of 238 patients with SVR, HCC developed in 16 (6.8%) patients. The average follow-up period was 9.1 years. The cumulative incidence of HCC was 3.4% at 5 years and 7.5% at 10 years. The median pre-Tx and post-Tx WFA+-M2BP values were 1.69 (range: 0.28 to 12.04 cutoff index (COI)) and 0.80 (range: 0.17 to 5.29 COI), respectively. The WFA+-M2BP values decreased significantly after SVR (P < 0.001). The median post-Tx WFA+-M2BP value in patients who developed HCC was significantly higher than that in patients who did not (P < 0.01). Multivariate analysis disclosed that age (> 60 years), sex (male), pre-Tx platelet count (< 15.0×103/μL), and post-Tx WFA+-M2BP (> 2.0 COI) were associated with the development of HCC after SVR.
Conclusion
Post-Tx WFA+-M2BP (> 2.0 COI) is associated with the risk for development of HCC among patients with SVR. The WFA+-M2BP values could be a new predictor for HCC after SVR. 相似文献2.

Background
The beneficial effects of brain training games are expected to transfer to other cognitive functions, but these beneficial effects are poorly understood. Here we investigate the impact of the brain training game (Brain Age) on cognitive functions in the elderly. Methods and Results
Thirty-two elderly volunteers were recruited through an advertisement in the local newspaper and randomly assigned to either of two game groups (Brain Age, Tetris). This study was completed by 14 of the 16 members in the Brain Age group and 14 of the 16 members in the Tetris group. To maximize the benefit of the interventions, all participants were non-gamers who reported playing less than one hour of video games per week over the past 2 years. Participants in both the Brain Age and the Tetris groups played their game for about 15 minutes per day, at least 5 days per week, for 4 weeks. Each group played for a total of about 20 days. Measures of the cognitive functions were conducted before and after training. Measures of the cognitive functions fell into four categories (global cognitive status, executive functions, attention, and processing speed). Results showed that the effects of the brain training game were transferred to executive functions and to processing speed. However, the brain training game showed no transfer effect on any global cognitive status nor attention. Conclusions
Our results showed that playing Brain Age for 4 weeks could lead to improve cognitive functions (executive functions and processing speed) in the elderly. This result indicated that there is a possibility which the elderly could improve executive functions and processing speed in short term training. The results need replication in large samples. Long-term effects and relevance for every-day functioning remain uncertain as yet.Trial Registration

We developed a novel method using indirect staining with cerium chloride for visualization of the catechin derivative epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg) on the surface of particles, i.e., polystyrene beads and bacterial cells, by electron microscopy. The staining method is based on the fact that in an alkaline environment, EGCg produces hydrogen peroxide, and then hydrogen peroxide reacts with cerium, resulting in a cerium hydroperoxide precipitate. This precipitate subsequently reacts with EGCg to produce larger deposits. The amount of precipitate is proportional to the amount of EGCg. Highly EGCg-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus and EGCg-resistant Escherichia coli were treated with EGCg under various pH conditions. Transmission electron microscopy observation showed that the amount of deposits on S. aureus increased with an increase in EGCg concentration. After treating bacterial cells with 0.5 mg/mL EGCg (pH 6.0), attachment of EGCg was significantly lower to E. coli than to S. aureus. This is the first report that shows differences in affinity of EGCg to the cell surfaces of Gram-positive and -negative bacteria by electron microscopy. 相似文献

Genista saharae is an indigenous shrub legume that spontaneously grows in the northeastern Algerian Sahara. It is known for efficient dune fixation and soil preservation against desertification, due to its drought tolerance and its contribution to sustainable nitrogen resources implemented by biological N2-fixation. In this study, the root nodule bacteria of G. saharae were investigated using phenotypic and phylogenetic characterization. A total of 57 rhizobial strains were isolated from nodules from several sites in the hyper-arid region of Metlili and Taibet (east Septentrional Sahara). They all nodulate G. saharae species but they differed in their symbiotic efficiency and effectiveness. The genetic diversity was assessed by sequencing three housekeeping genes (atpD, recA and 16S rRNA). The majority of isolates (81 %) belonged to the genus Ensifer (previously Sinorhizobium), represented mainly by the species Ensifer meliloti. The next most abundant genera were Neorhizobium (17 %) with 3 different species: N. alkalisoli, N. galegae and N. huautlense and Mesorhizobium (1.75 %) represented by the species M. camelthorni. Most of the isolated strains tolerated up to 4 % (w/v) NaCl and grew at 45 °C. This study is the first report on the characterization of G. saharae microsymbionts in the Algerian Sahara. 相似文献

The diversity of rhizobia associated with introduced and native Acacia species in Algeria was investigated from soil samples collected across seven districts distributed in arid and semi-arid zones. The in vitro tolerances of rhizobial strains to NaCl and high temperature in pure culture varied greatly regardless of their geographical and host plant origins but were not correlated with the corresponding edaphoclimatic characteristics of the sampling sites, as clearly demonstrated by principal component analysis. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons, the 48 new strains isolated were ranked into 10 phylogenetic groups representing five bacterial genera, namely, Ensifer, Mesorhizobium, Rhizobium, Bradyrhizobium, and Ochrobactrum. Acacia saligna, an introduced species, appeared as the most promiscuous host because it was efficiently nodulated with the widest diversity of rhizobia taxa including both fast-growing ones, Rhizobium, Ensifer, and Mesorhizobium, and slow-growing Bradyrhizobium. The five other Acacia species studied were associated with fast-growing bacterial taxa exclusively. No difference in efficiency was found between bacterial taxa isolated from a given Acacia species. The tolerances of strains to salinity and temperature remains to be tested in symbiosis with their host plants to select the most adapted Acacia sp.-LNB taxa associations for further revegetation programs. 相似文献

The bean-rhizobia symbiosis allows atmospheric nitrogen fixation through nodule formation. Nevertheless, nodule establishment in Mediterranean areas is subjected to various biotic and abiotic constraints such as phosphorus soils deficiency. This study compares plant-growth response to moderate (75 μmol KH2PO4 plant?1 week?1) versus severe phosphorus deficiency (30 μmol KH2PO4 plant?1 week?1) after inoculation with Rhizobium tropici CIAT 899 and Glomus intraradices of four Phaseolus vulgaris lines contrasting in P use efficiency (PUE) for their symbiotic nitrogen fixation (SNF) in hydroaeroponic culture. After 5 weeks of growth under glasshouse conditions, the oxygen consumption related to nitrogen fixation was measured on intact nodulated roots. The obtained results revealed that mycorrhizal colonization decreased the nodulated-roots O2 consumption of P. vulgaris under both P deficiencies although it increased the growth of all plant organs and the nodulation with a large genotypic variability. Moreover, mycorrhizal colonization was higher under severe P deficiency than under moderate one. In conclusion, the tripartite inoculation improved growth parameters under severe P-deficiency with a decrease in nodulated root O2 consumption. 相似文献

Medicago ciliaris (L.) All., a salt-tolerant legume, was not nodulated by Rhizobium meliloti (2011), a strain commonly used for field inoculation of alfalfas. A strain of Rhizobium meliloti (ABS7) was isolated from saline Algerian soils. It is generally more salt-resistant than strain 2011, exhibits a higher rate of growth and induces the formation of nodules on M. ciliaris . C2 H2 reduction activity of M. ciliaris nodules was inhibited by 50% in the presence of 200 m M NaCl in the culture medium. whereas 100 m M NaCl was sufficient to inhibit the activity of nodules of M. sativa (L. cv. Europe). C2 H2 reduction by bacteroids, isolated from nodules of the two species of alfalfa, was directly inhibited by the presence of NaCl in the incubation medium. In both cases, glucose could support bacteroid nitrogen fixation, but only in a narrow range of O2 tensions. Bacteriods from M. ciliaris were more tolerant to salt than M. sativa ones. The salt resistance of bacteroids from nodules of plants watered with NaCl solutions was not improved in either species. Salt directly added to the incubation mixture of bacteroids or to the culture medium of plants inhibited O2 uptake of bacteroids isolated from nodules of both M. ciliaris and M. sativa . The depressive effect of NaCl on bacteroid C2 H2 reduction could be directly related to the drop in bacteroid respiration. The nitrogen fixation capacity of the M. ciliaris-Rhizobium meliloti (ABS7) symbiosis under saline conditions leads us to recommend the introduction of this association in salt-troubled areas. 相似文献
