L1 (LINE-1) retrotransposable elements provide a "fossil" record of the phylogenetic history of murid rodents

The single most difficult problem in phylogenetic analysis is deciding whether a shared taxonomic character is due to common ancestry or one that appeared independently due to convergence, parallelism, or reversion to an ancestral state. Mammalian L1 retrotransposons undergo periodic amplifications in which multiple copies of the elements are interspersed in the genome. Because these elements apparently are transmitted only by inheritance and are retained in the genome, a shared L1 amplification event can only be an inherited ancestral character. We propose that L1 amplification events can be an excellent tool for analyzing mammalian evolution and demonstrate here how we addressed several refractory problems in rodent systematics using L1 DNA as a taxonomic character.      

Development of a diagnostic test system for detecting soluble staphylococcal antigens by an immunoenzyme method

ELISA is used for detecting the soluble staphylococcal antigen in patients with purulent septic infections. The optimum conditions for the assay have been established: the dose of staphylococcal gamma globulin for plate sensitization should be 5.0-10.0 micrograms/ml, the pH of the buffer solution 9.6-10.0, the time and temperature of incubation 18-20 hours at 4 degrees C or 5 hours at 37 degrees C. The possibility of using plates manufactured in the USSR has been shown. The sensitivity of the above diagnostic test system is 0.005 microgram/ml.     

The enhanced radioresistance (adaptive response) in vivo of splenic colony-forming units (CFU-S) following the exposure of mice to 60Co gamma rays at low doses]

An increase of resistance to radiation damage of human lymphocytes previously exposed to low doses of ionizing radiation from incorporated tritiated thymidine was observed by G. Olivieri et al. in 1984. The phenomenon was named adaptive response and its occurrence was reported by others for many animal and plant cells. In this research we studied the adaptive response of spleen colony formation at different time after previous irradiation of mice with low doses of 60Co gamma rays. Our results suggest that the pretreatments protect spleen colony-formatting units (CFU-S) from the second damaging radiation dose of 1.5 Gy during long time (as many as one month).     

Comparative analysis of mitochondrial DNA variation in four species of Far Eastern redfins of the genus Tribolodon (Pisces, Cyprinidae)

The variability of mtDNA in four Far Eastern endemic species of the genus Tribolodon was studied in the significant part of their areas. There was no close relationship between the lifetime and the level of mtDNA variability. The relation between the population genetic structure and the level of amphidromic species was revealed. The presence of mtDNA phylogroup differed in three of the four species shows that there was a long period of independent intraspecific divergent evolution in the history of these species. This period falls on aproximately the same historical age, and, apparently, is caused by one and the same factors. The period was not enough long and ended in the integration of genetically independent units into a single species.     

Isolation and purification of restriction endonuclease BpeI from Bordetella pertussis

New restriction endonuclease has been isolated from Bordetella pertussis vaccine strain 305 and purified in 1 stage on Sepharose covalently bound with blue dextran. The isolated restrictase has been found capable of breaking down lambda-phag DNA into 7 fragments. According to its specificity, Bpe I is the isoschizomer of Hind III obtained from Haemophilus influenzae strain Rd.
