1. Organisms face the difficult task of selecting an optimal new nest from the available options during relocation. Studies on honeybees and ants in their natural habitat indicate that scouts encounter multiple options that vary in their physical and biotic characteristics. 2. Architectural features, location, odour, and the presence of nest mates impact their choice of nest site selection. In order to examine the influence of diverse parameters on final nest site selection we conducted choice experiments on ants in the context of relocation. 3. After controlling for any influence by physical characteristics, we found that the presence of brood, adults, and colony odour acted as attractants with more colonies relocating into these new nests than expected by chance alone. In contrast, the presence of a reproductive female, or familiarity of location had no influence on the choice. New nests containing dead ants evoked cleaning responses from scouts, which may interfere with relocation into these nests. 4. Even although colonies consist of hundreds of adults and brood, colony integrity was maintained in 98.7% of colonies. Furthermore, we found that none of the eight studied colonies relocated when faced with minor flooding in their natural habitat, indicating that the cost of relocation is non‐trivial and that this species is capable of minor damage repairs. 5. These observations highlight the complexity of relocation in general, allow the characterisation of desirable nest attributes in this species, and highlight the need for similar exploration in other social insects.  相似文献

Development of SSR markers and construction of a linkage map in jute   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Jute is an important natural fibre crop, which is only second to cotton in its importance at the global level. It is mostly grown in Indian subcontinent and has been recently used for the development of genomics resources.We recently initiated a programme to develop simple sequence repeat markers and reported a set of 2469 SSR that were developed using four SSR-enriched libraries (Mir et al. 2009). In this communication, we report an additional set of 607 novel SSR in 393 SSR containing sequences. However, primers could be designed for only 417 potentially useful SSR. Polymorphism survey was carried out for 374 primer pairs using two parental genotypes (JRO 524 and PPO4) of a mapping population developed for fibre fineness; only 66 SSR were polymorphic. Owing to a low level of polymorphism between the parental genotypes and a high degree of segregation distortion in recombinant inbred lines, genotypic data of only 53 polymorphic SSR on the mapping population consisting of 120 RIL could be used for the construction of a linkage map; 36 SSR loci were mapped on six linkage groups that covered a total genetic distance of 784.3 cM. Hopefully, this map will be enriched with more SSR loci in future and will prove useful for identification of quantitative trait loci/genes for molecular breeding involving improvement of fibre fineness and other related traits in jute.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Stentor coeruleus were experimentally induced to shed their membranellar bands (MB), structures consisting of rows of cilia and their basal bodies. Control stentors entirely regenerate their MB's within 8-10 hours according to a well-known pattern. Stentors replaced in medium containing the fungicide and mitotic spindle inhibitor griseofulvin (10-5 M ) could be reversibly inhibited from regeneration for about 3 to more than 24 hours. If griseofulvin-inhibited cells were removed and washed, they regenerated like the controls. After about one day in 10-5 M griseofulvin and at lower concentrations stentors eventually regenerated in the presence of the drug, but abnormally.
Normal unshed stentors show certain minor cytological effects and are unable to divide in griseofulvin (10-5 M ); however, they can be maintained swimming actively for several weeks in nonlethal concentrations of the drug. Altho some induced abnormalities persist after removal from griseofulvin, all washed cells eventually revert to normal.  相似文献
