Lack of Significant Elevation of Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cells in Peripheral Blood of Chronically Hepatitis C Virus-Infected Individuals

Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC) are immature myeloid cells with immunosuppressive function. Compared to the level in healthy controls (HC), no elevation of MDSC in chronic hepatitis C (cHEP-C) patients was found, and there was no difference in MDSC based on genotype or viral load (P > 0.25). Moreover, MDSC of cHEP-C patients inhibited CD8 T cell function as efficiently as MDSC of HC did. Since we detected neither quantitative nor qualitative differences in MDSC of cHEP-C patients relative to those of HC, we postulate that MDSC in peripheral blood are most likely not significant regarding immune dysfunction in cHEP-C.     

A comparative study of plasma membrane Mg2+-ATPase activities in normal,regenerating and malignant cells

Plasma membranes have been prepared from rat normal liver cells, regenerating liver cells and Yoshida ascites hepatoma 66 cells after intact cells were first bound to polylysine-coated polyacrylamide beads, and the membrane-associated Mg²⁺-ATPase activity was assayed directly on beads with membrane attached. With plasma membranes from normal liver cells, K_m for ATP and V were found to be higher than those in regenerating liver cells and hepatoma cells. Vanadate caused a different sensitivity of the activity, without an effect in normal liver cells and with an inhibition in regenerating liver cells and hepatoma cells. The activity in normal and regenerating liver cells decreased with increasing temperature above 24–30°C, while the activity in hepatoma cells continued to increase linearly to 37°C. Unlike the enzyme in normal and regenerating liver cells, the hepatoma enzyme was shown to have a higher phase transition temperature and lower activation energies. In all three kinds of cells the activity was increased by the dephosphorylation of plasma membranes and unaffected by the phosphorylation. By means of histochemical Mg²⁺-ATPase staining applied on polyacrylamide gels, at least three major bands which show the enzymic activity were visible in normal and regenerating liver and a single band was detected in hepatoma cells.     

Occurrence and abundance of bregmacerotid larvae in Kagoshima Bay,southern Japan,with descriptions of ontogenetic larval characters

Regular collections of ichthyoplankton were made with a larva net at 9–14 stations from Oct. 1983 to Dec. 1988 in Kagoshima Bay, totalling 817 collections from 66 cruises. A total of 2172 bregmacerotid larvae obtained from 195 collections of 33 cruises were identified asB. atlanticus (2001),B. neonectabanus (169),B. macclellandii (1) andB. nectabanus (1, tentative identification). The peaks of mean densities of larvae collected occurred in autumn forB. atlanticus andB. neonectabanus. The larvae ofB. atlanticus occurred throughout the bay, and their densities and frequency of occurrence were lower in the northern part of the bay. In the southern part of the bay, stations in its southwest quadrant showed higher densities than the others. The larvae ofB. neonectabanus occurred only in the southern part of the bay in which stations in the northwest quadrant showed higher densities than the others.
