Small isometric virus-like particles were found in low concentration in apparently healthy carnations of the Mediterranean, miniature and Chinese type but not in eleven Sim cultivars tested. Most carnations containing these particles were from Italy but some were from France and the USA. The particles were not transmitted by grafting or by mechanical inoculation but were seed-transmitted to a large proportion of seedlings. Antisera to partially purified particles were obtained. The particles did not react with antisera to twenty-eight isometric plant viruses or virus-like particles but were serologically related to similar particles found in carnations in England, Holland and Israel. When negatively stained, the particles were isometric with a diameter of about 29 nm and a rounded rather than angular profile, but without clear substructure; some particles were penetrated by the stain. The particles remained intact in neutral sodium phosphotungstate. After isopycnic centrifugation in CsCl solution, preparations of particles formed a main band of mean density 1.377 g/ml and other fainter bands that varied in intensity and position in different preparations. The sheep tick is confined almost entirely to rough, poor hill and moorland pastures. Agricultural improvement of these pastures involves (among other things) reduction in the depth of the vegetation layer and partial or complete destruction of the moisture-holding underlying 'mat' of decaying vegetable matter. Assessment of the tick populations on improved and on comparable control areas showed a reduction in tick population following upon pasture improvement. But a fairly considerable degree of improvement is required to bring about a satisfactory reduction. Ticks were not completely extirpated even by ploughing. It is probable that pasture improvement affects tick population mainly by reducing cover and thus the humidity.
Unfortunately, effective pasture improvement is not economic on hill and moorland grazings in general. Such improvement as is practicable could only be a supplement to other control measures.
Since the sheep flock supports almost all the female ticks on a pasture, control is most likely to follow from the development of an efficient acaricidal sheep dip. 相似文献

Abstract. Two models of the relationship between diurnal variation in shoot water potential and transpiration in 14-year-old Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr. were compared. The first model was a physiologically based resistance-capacitance (R-C) analogue with its associated differential equations. The second was a non-physiological discrete-difference (D-D) or stochastic transfer function model. The RC model included only the effect of water storage in the phloem and bark while the D-D model implicity included all storage mechanisms. The R-C and D-D models explained similar fractions (62% and 68% respectively) of the variation in shoot water potential due to diurnal changes in transpiration rate. However, the D-D model had fewer parameters than the R-C model. The results from the D-D model showed that the resistance to flow from soil to shoots along the trunk, (RT), was 5 × 103 MPa kg-1 s and the capacitance of the phloem and bark treated as a single store, (Cs ), was 1.6 kg MPa-1 . It is suggested that the resistance to flow into storage (Rs ) is much greater than RT and can be disregarded. A non-linear version of the D-D model suggested [hat resistance to flow in the trunk increases with increasing transpiration rate. 相似文献

We present results from modelling studies, which suggest that, at most, only about 10–20% of recently observed soil carbon losses in England and Wales could possibly be attributable to climate warming. The dynamics of dissemination of the environmental human pathogen Vibrio parahaemolyticus are uncertain. The O3:K6 clone was restricted to Asia until its detection along the Peruvian coasts and in northern Chile in 1997 in phase with the arrival of El Niño waters. A subsequent emergence of O3:K6 strains was detected in austral Chile in 2004. The origin of these 1997 and 2004 population radiations has not yet been conclusively determined. Multiple loci VNTR analysis using seven polymorphic loci was carried out with a number of representative strains from Asia, Peru and Chile to determine their genetic characteristics and population structure. Asian and Chilean subpopulations were the most genetically distant groups with an intermediate subpopulation in Peru. Population structure inferred from a minimum‐spanning tree and Bayesian analysis divided the populations into two genetically distinct groups, consistent with the epidemic dynamics of the O3:K6 clone in South America. One group comprised strains from the original Asiatic population and strains arriving in Peru and Chile in 1997. The second group included the remaining Peruvian Strains and Chilean strains obtained from Puerto Montt in 2004. The analysis of the arrival of the O3:K6 clone at the Pacific coasts of South America has provided novel insights linking the origin of the invasion in 1997 to Asian populations and describing the successful establishment of the O3:K6 populations, first in Peru and subsequently in the South of Chile owing to a possible radiation of Peruvian populations. 相似文献

1. Patterns of mite egg consumption by the phytophagous thrips Frankliniella schultzei Trybom were investigated. Although F. schultzei predation is somewhat similar to that of F. occidentalis (Pergande), the understanding of predation by these two phytophagous thrips was extended, allowing the functional significance of flower thrips’ predatory behaviour to be reinterpreted. 2. Second-instar larvae consumed significantly more eggs than any other life-stage, and the daily intake of eggs by second-instar larvae declined significantly with each successive day of the 4-day duration of instar two. 3. Mite eggs that had had their silken webbing removed were consumed at a significantly greater rate than those with their webbing intact. 4. Frankliniella schultzei immatures developed successfully both on diets containing cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) leaf tissue plus mite eggs and on cotton leaf tissue alone. Supplementing a leaf tissue larval diet with mite eggs lowered the developmental time from egg to adult significantly, as well as lowering the percentage mortality. Continuation of the mite egg supplement beyond adult eclosion increased fecundity significantly and extended life span over that achieved on a leaf diet alone. 5. In laboratory choice tests, mite eggs and pollen of Wax Mallow (Malvaviscus arboreus Cav.), the usual host of F. schultzei in Brisbane, were encountered with similar frequencies. Furthermore, the mean proportion of encounters with pollen grains that resulted in consumption of pollen did not differ significantly from the encounter : consumption rate for mite eggs. 6. Frankliniella schultzei, like F. occidentalis, does not seem to be specifically adapted for preying on mite eggs, even though such predation enhances performance and reproductive output of F. schultzei when constrained on cotton leaves. Comparison of performance results with those published for F. schultzei when reared on the floral parts of one of its primary hosts (M. arboreus) (Milne et al., 1996), indicates that mite egg predation does not make up completely for a deficient adult or larval diet. 相似文献

A model is described which predicts those aspects of wheat canopy development and growth which are influential in determining the development of epidemics of foliar pathogens, the efficacy of foliar applied fungicides and the impact of disease on yield; specifically the emergence, expansion and senescence of upper culm leaves in relation to anthesis date. This focus on upper leaves allowed prediction of leaf emergence dates by reference to anthesis, rather than sowing. This avoided the step changes in flag leaf emergence date with temperature, reported with earlier models, without the additional complexity of a stochastic approach. The model is designed to be coupled to models of foliar disease, where the primary effect on yield is via reduction in green canopy area and hence interception of photosynthetically active radiation. Mechanisms were incorporated to allow observations of crop development during the growing season to update state variables and adjust parameters affecting future predictions. The model was calibrated using experimental data, and validated against independent observations of crop development on four wheat cultivars across seven contrasting sites in the UK. Anthesis date and upper culm leaf emergence were always predicted within one week of their observed dates. 相似文献
