Seed size affects the probability of seed predation. Large seeds should be preferred over small seeds but the selective responses of seed predators may also be frequency-dependent. Seed predators may prefer the most common seed sizes (apostatic selection), the rarest ones (antiapostatic selection) or even be unresponsive to the size of seeds. Moreover, seed density may further modify the selective responses of seed predators. We expect that at a low seed density seed consumption should be concentrated on common seed sizes, and at high seed density it should be concentrated on rare seed sizes, as common ones act as a background that makes rare phenotypes more conspicuous (the effect of background). We tested this prediction in a field experiment with seeds of Cryptocarya alba (Lauraceae) at La Campana National Park, central Chile. We presented large and small seeds in two contrasting seed densities (ten and 100 seeds per m2) and at five frequencies of large seeds: 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 0.9. After 28 days we measured the proportions of the two size classes in the remaining seeds. Large seeds were always preferred to small seeds, even when they were at low frequency. Contrary to the predictions, at low seed density consumption was antiapostatic whereas at high seed density selection was independent of frequency. 1. A key aspect of the ecology and evolution of adaptive prey responses to predator risk is the timing by which the former develop a defensive trait in response to inducing signals released by the latter. This property, called reactivity, has been shown to affect population stability and persistence. 2. Theoretically, the minimal predator density required by prey to exhibit induced defences is expected to increase with the effectiveness of the defence and decrease with its cost. Likewise, the time required for the prey population to exhibit an induced defence is expected to increase together with cost. 3. The freshwater rotifers Brachionus calyciflorus and B. havanaensis and their predator Asplanchna brightwelli were used to test the hypothesis that prey species exhibiting defences that offer a larger fitness benefit and lower fitness cost are more reactive to predator signals, in terms of requiring shorter exposure time and lower signal concentration to trigger a morphological defence reaction. 4. Our results showed that both prey species exhibited costly and effective defences after induction by predator infochemicals. Faster reactions were observed at higher levels of predator cues. Nevertheless, the observed relationship between reactivity and benefit/cost of defences did not agree with our expectations. 5. To our knowledge, this is the first study in which the timing of induction of morphological defences is experimentally assessed over a gradient of risk signals. We propose new research directions to disentangle the mechanisms and project the consequences of prey decisions at the morphological level.  相似文献

The physiological capacity for sucrose breakdown in developingjuice sac cells of acid limes was estimated by assaying theactivity of the three enzymes of sucrose catabolism in additionto vacuolar acid hydrolysis. The maximum potential rates ofsucrose breakdown were compared with the observed rates of carbonutilization. Highest potential rates of sucrose breakdown (28.621mmol cm–3 per hydrated active space d–1) occurredat the initial stages of fruit development where carbon utilizationwas highest. As the fruit developed, the potential rates ofsucrose breakdown and carbon utilization declined to very lowlevels. At 80% of development, vacuolar acid hydrolysis becamethe only physiological mechanism for sucrose breakdown. Therelatively low amounts of sucrose hydrolysed by acid hydrolysisat this time were just sufficient to account for the measuredcarbon demands. The results suggest that carbon supplied bythis distinct sucrose catabolizing system is able to provideadequate levels of carbon skeletons for the observed levelsof respiration and dry weight deposition early in development,but becomes a limiting factor for growth in the later stages. Conservation of genetic diversity, one of the three main forms of biodiversity, is a fundamental concern in conservation biology as it provides the raw material for evolutionary change and thus the potential to adapt to changing environments. By means of meta‐analyses, we tested the generality of the hypotheses that habitat fragmentation affects genetic diversity of plant populations and that certain life history and ecological traits of plants can determine differential susceptibility to genetic erosion in fragmented habitats. Additionally, we assessed whether certain methodological approaches used by authors influence the ability to detect fragmentation effects on plant genetic diversity. We found overall large and negative effects of fragmentation on genetic diversity and outcrossing rates but no effects on inbreeding coefficients. Significant increases in inbreeding coefficient in fragmented habitats were only observed in studies analyzing progenies. The mating system and the rarity status of plants explained the highest proportion of variation in the effect sizes among species. The age of the fragment was also decisive in explaining variability among effect sizes: the larger the number of generations elapsed in fragmentation conditions, the larger the negative magnitude of effect sizes on heterozygosity. Our results also suggest that fragmentation is shifting mating patterns towards increased selfing. We conclude that current conservation efforts in fragmented habitats should be focused on common or recently rare species and mainly outcrossing species and outline important issues that need to be addressed in future research on this area.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The taxonomic attribution of four Leishmania stocks isolated from humans in Ecuador has been explored by both multilocus enzyme electrophoresis and random amplified polymorphic DNA. For three loci, MLEE results showed patterns suggesting a heterozygous state for a diploid organism, while the corresponding homozygous states are characteristic of the Leishmania panamensis/guyanensis complex and Leishmania braziliensis . RAPD profiles exhibited for several primers a combination of the Leishmania panmensis/guyanensis complex and L. braziliensis characters. These data hence suggest that the four stocks are the results of hybridization between L. panamensis/guyanensis and L. braziliensis . MLEE data show that the results cannot be attributed to either mixture of stocks, or an F1 in the framework of a simple Mendelian inheritance.  相似文献

Four new species of Indigofera (Leguminosae, Papilionoideae) for the flora of Mexico are described and illustrated: Indigofera floresii, I. hirsutissima, I. magallanesii and I. sinaloensis. Among the new species, I. sinaloensis, is the second species of the series Platycarpae. Including these four new species, we estimate the existence in Mexico of about 31 wild species of the genus.  相似文献

Seed size is a life history attribute that affects the probability of seed predation, and therefore affects plant fitness. Compared with smaller seeds, those with large size should be more attractive to predators, as they constitute a more profitable food item because of higher energetic and/or nutrient content. However, predator preferences may be frequency-dependent in the sense that they may be modulated by the relative abundance of alternative seeds of different sizes. We set up a field experiment to evaluate frequency-dependent seed predation using seeds of Cryptocarya alba (Lauraceae), at La Campana National Park in central Chile. Predators (rodents and birds) preferentially consumed large seeds in an antiapostatic manner. These selective responses were maintained throughout the experiment and seed selection by predators was not affected by previous seed consumption. Our results suggest that (a) large seeds are very profitable food items actively sought by seed predators even at low relative abundance, (b) seed selection is expressed in a short time scale and (c) seed predators, by consuming large seeds consistently, have the potential to modify significantly the quality of plant progeny.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 81 , 307–312.  相似文献

The history of conifers introduced earlier elsewhere in the southern hemisphere suggests that recent invasions in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay are likely to increase in number and size. In South Africa, New Zealand and Australia, early ornamental introductions and small forestry plantations did not lead to large‐scale invasions, while subsequent large plantations were followed with a lag of about 20–30 years by troublesome invasions. Large‐scale conifer plantation forestry in South America began about 50–80 years later than in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, while reports of invasions in South America lagged behind those in the latter nations by a century. Impacts of invading non‐native conifers outside South America are varied and include replacement of grassland and shrubland by conifer forest, alteration of fire and hydrological regimes, modification of soil nutrients, and changes in aboveground and belowground biotic communities. Several of these effects have already been detected in various parts of South America undergoing conifer invasion. The sheer amount of area planted in conifers is already very large in Chile and growing rapidly in Argentina and Brazil. This mass of reproductive trees, in turn, produces an enormous propagule pressure that may accelerate ongoing invasions and spark new ones at an increasing rate. Regulations to control conifer invasions, including measures to mitigate spread, were belatedly implemented in New Zealand and South Africa, as well as in certain Australian states, inspired by observations on invasions in those nations. Regulations in South America are weaker and piecemeal, but the existing research base on conifer invasions elsewhere could be useful in fashioning effective regulations in South America. Pressure from foreign customers in South Africa has led most companies there to seek certification through the Forestry Stewardship Council; a similar programme operates in Australia.
