Virtual reality is a powerful tool with the ability to immerse a user within a completely external environment. This immersion is particularly useful when visualizing and analyzing interactions between small organic molecules, molecular inorganic complexes, and biomolecular systems such as redox proteins and enzymes. A common tool used in the biomedical community to analyze such interactions is the Adaptive Poisson‐Boltzmann Solver (APBS) software, which was developed to solve the equations of continuum electrostatics for large biomolecular assemblages. Numerous applications exist for using APBS in the biomedical community including analysis of protein ligand interactions and APBS has enjoyed widespread adoption throughout the biomedical community. Currently, typical use of the full APBS toolset is completed via the command line followed by visualization using a variety of two‐dimensional external molecular visualization software. This process has inherent limitations: visualization of three‐dimensional objects using a two‐dimensional interface masks important information within the depth component. Herein, we have developed a single application, UnityMol‐APBS, that provides a dual experience where users can utilize the full range of the APBS toolset, without the use of a command line interface, by use of a simple graphical user interface (GUI) for either a standard desktop or immersive virtual reality experience.  相似文献

The effects of malnutrition on the viral replication pattern and severity of clinical disease were examined in suckling mice infected with mouse rotavirus (MRV). The infection in malnourished animals was characterized by a significant decrease in the minimal infectious dose and in the incubation period of the onset of diarrhea, when compared to well-nourished controls. Viral replication in the dispersed enterocytes was observed 6-12 hr earlier, fecal viral shedding peaked significantly earlier, and the clinical disease appeared to be more severe in the malnourished animals than in the controls. These observations provide strong evidence for malnutrition-induced alterations in the pathogenesis of rotaviral infection in vivo.  相似文献

Background

Due to the health and economic benefits of breast milk, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that for infants who cannot receive breast milk from their own mothers, the next preferred option is donated breast milk. This recommendation is however rarely practiced in most developing countries where donor milk is not widely accepted.

Methods

This cross-sectional multi-center study enrolled mothers attending antenatal or pediatric clinics in six tertiary institution in south-east Nigeria using purposive and convenient sampling method. Data collection was done using pretested questionnaires. The study aimed to assess the knowledge, acceptability and willingness to donate breast milk and/or use donated breast milk for their infants It also explored factors that determine this behavior.

Results

A total of 1235 mothers participated; 39% (480/1225) have heard about the concept of donor milk, while only 10% (79/759) and 7% (81/1179), respectively, had adequate knowledge of the concept and policy on donor milk. Sixty percent indicated willingness to use donor milk or donate breast milk if need arises. Respondents with lower age (p?=?0.049) and with higher occupational status (p?=?0.001) were more likely to have adequate knowledge of donor breast milk, while respondents with lower educational attainment (p?=?0.002) and those who are non-Christians (p?=?0.004) were more likely to request financial inducement for donating their breast milk. Adequate knowledge of the concept of donor milk (p?=?0.001), preference of donor milk to infant formula (p?=?0.001) and requirement of financial remuneration (p?=?0.001) were the only significant predictors of willingness to donate and/or receive donated breast milk.

Conclusion

The knowledge of the concept of donor breast milk and awareness of policies regulating its practice in Nigeria is low, but the prospect of its acceptability is high among mothers surveyed in south-east Nigeria. Targeted public education by relevant government agencies in collaboration with clinicians, community and religious leaders about the concept of donor breast milk to families may help increase the acceptance and practice of donating breast milk and/or use of donated breast milk among mothers in the region.

Mast cells are tissue resident allergic effector cells that drive IgE-mediated food allergies. There are several steps leading to mast cell activation in the context of allergic disease that can be targeted to prevent mast cell activation and degranulation. These include blocking IgE-FcεRI crosslinking and type 2 cytokine receptor activation; modulating cell-surface neural chemical receptors; stabilizing mast cell membranes to prevent co-localization of activating receptors; impeding intracellular signaling; and engaging cell surface inhibitory receptors. This review highlights several ITIM-containing inhibitory mast cell surface receptors that could serve as pharmaceutical targets to prevent mast cell activation and degranulation in the context of food allergy. When activated, these ITIM-containing inhibitory receptors recruit the phosphatases SHP-1, SHP-2, and/or SHIP to dephosphorylate the tyrosine kinases responsible for activation signals downstream of the IgE-FcεRI complex. We describe several members of the Ig and Ig-like inhibitory receptor and C-type lectin inhibitory receptor superfamilies. Fundamental studies exploring the behavior of these receptors within the context of experimental food allergy models are needed. A deeper understanding of how these receptors modulate mast cell-driven food allergic responses will shape future strategies to harness these inhibitory receptors to treat food allergy.  相似文献
