Infant mortality in Armenia, 1992–2003

Health system reforms have been taken in Armenia during a time of dramatic economic and fiscal distress. It is important to assess trends in health indicators and ascertain if the changes in socio-economic systems affected the health status of infants as the most vulnerable part of the population. We find that infant mortality has fallen during the period c. 1992-2003 in spite of the difficult economic circumstances because of health-care procedures that were introduced. Particular attention is paid to the underreporting of infants' death cases in the state registration system as well as to estimating the role of different factors influencing infant mortality in Armenia.     

Synthesis and in vitro evaluation of [18F]BMS-754807: A potential PET ligand for IGF-1R

Radiosynthesis and in vitro evaluation of [¹⁸F](S)-1-(4-((5-cyclopropyl-1H-pyrazol-3-yl)amino)pyrrolo[2,1-f][1,2,4]triazin-2-yl)-N-(6-fluoropyridin-3-yl)-2-methylpyrrolidine-2-carboxamide ([¹⁸F]BMS-754807 or [¹⁸F]1) a specific IGF-1R inhibitor was performed. [¹⁸F]1 demonstrated specific binding in vitro to human cancer tissues. Synthesis of reference standard 1 and corresponding bromo derivative (1a), the precursor for radiolabeling were achieved from 2,4-dichloropyrrolo[2,1-f][1,2,4]triazine (4) in three steps with 50% overall yield. The radioproduct was obtained in 8% yield by reacting 1a with [¹⁸F]TBAF in DMSO at 170 °C at high radiochemical purity and specific activity (1–2 Ci/μmol, N = 10). The proof of concept of IGF-IR imaging with [¹⁸F]1 was demonstrated by in vitro autoradiography studies using pathologically identified surgically removed grade IV glioblastoma, breast cancer and pancreatic tumor tissues. These studies indicate that [¹⁸F]1 can be a potential PET tracer for monitoring IGF-1R.     

Multiunit activity of the inferior olive during a conditioned motor sequence]

Multinuit activity from the inferior olive was recorded in chronic cats during a learned motor task. The animals were trained to perform a succession of rapid flexion-extension arm movements alternating with two maintained postures. No significant differences were observed in the olivary activity during maintained postures. However an increase of activity occurred before the beginning of the flexion detected on the biceps EMG recordings. The first modifications of olivary activity occurred in synchrony with postural reorganization preceding the flexion. This latter involved primarily the triceps. The increase of activity took place during the execution of movement and ended after the reaching of the target.     

Stacking and hydrogen bonding: DNA cooperativity at melting

By taking into account base-base stacking interactions we improve the Generalized Model of Polypeptide Chain (GMPC). Based on a one-dimensional Potts-like model with many-particle interactions, the GMPC describes the helix-coil transition in both polypeptides and polynucleotides. In the framework of the GMPC we show that correctly introduced nearest-neighbor stacking interactions against the background of hydrogen bonding lead to increased stability (melting temperature) and, unexpectedly, to decreased cooperativity (maximal correlation length). The increase in stability is explained as due to an additional stabilizing interaction (stacking) and the surprising decrease in cooperativity is seen as a result of mixing of contributions of hydrogen bonding and stacking.
