In the recent discussion how biotic systems may react to ocean acidification caused by the rapid rise in carbon dioxide partial pressure (pCO2) in the marine realm, substantial research is devoted to calcifiers such as stony corals. The antagonistic process – biologically induced carbonate dissolution via bioerosion – has largely been neglected. Unlike skeletal growth, we expect bioerosion by chemical means to be facilitated in a high-CO2 world. This study focuses on one of the most detrimental bioeroders, the sponge Cliona orientalis, which attacks and kills live corals on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Experimental exposure to lowered and elevated levels of pCO2 confirms a significant enforcement of the sponges’ bioerosion capacity with increasing pCO2 under more acidic conditions. Considering the substantial contribution of sponges to carbonate bioerosion, this finding implies that tropical reef ecosystems are facing the combined effects of weakened coral calcification and accelerated bioerosion, resulting in critical pressure on the dynamic balance between biogenic carbonate build-up and degradation.  相似文献

In this study, 18 partly commercially available samples of rock salt from Austria, Germany, Pakistan, Poland, Switzerland, and Ukraine were investigated with respect to their content of trace elements using instrumental neutron activation analysis. Elements detected were Al, Ba, Br, Ca, Ce, Cl, Co, Cr, Cs, Eu, Fe, Hf, La, Mn, Na, Rb, Sb, Sc, Sm, Sr, Ta, Tb, Th, and Zn, some of them only in individual cases. An estimation of the bioavailability of these trace elements was performed by dissolving an equivalent of the sodium chloride samples in diluted hydrochloric acid (simulating stomach acid), filtering off the insoluble components, and analyzing the evaporated filtrate. It could be shown that in most cases bioactive trace elements like Fe can be found in rock salt in the form of almost insoluble compounds and are therefore not significantly bioavailable, whereas thorium, for example, was partly bioavailable in two cases. A significant contribution to the recommended daily intake of metal trace elements by using rock salt for nutrition can be excluded.  相似文献

Time course studies of carotenoid production and of mycelial growth in liquid cultures of Phycomyces blakesleeanus wild type [NRRL 1555 (?)], red mutants C9, C10 and C13 and the heterokaryon C2 * C9 are reported. The ratios of the concentrations of lycopene, γ-carotene and β-carotene in the red mutant C13 and in the heterokaryon C2 * C9 during the growth periods were measured. In these strains the concentration of lycopene is close to its final value after 2 days of growth, at a time at which β-carotene is just beginning to be produced. It is suggested that the β-carotene produced late is possibly synthesized via β-zeacarotene.  相似文献

A review of in vitro mutagenesis assessment of metal compounds in mammalian and nonmammalian test systems has been compiled. Prokaryotic assays are ineffective or inconsistent in their detection of most metals as mutagens, with the notable exception of hexavalent chromium. Mammalian assay systems appear to be similarly inappropriate for the screening of metal compounds based upon the limited number of studies that have employed those compounds having known carcinogenic activity. Although of limited value as screening tests for the detection of potentially carcinogenic metal compounds, the well-characterized in vitro mutagenesis systems may prove to be of significant value as a means to elucidate mechanisms of metal genotoxicity.  相似文献

Accumulation of unfolded proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) causes ER stress and activates a signaling network known as the unfolded protein response (UPR). Here we characterize how ER stress and the UPR inhibit insulin signaling. We find that ER stress inhibits insulin signaling by depleting the cell surface population of the insulin receptor. ER stress inhibits proteolytic maturation of insulin proreceptors by interfering with transport of newly synthesized insulin proreceptors from the ER to the plasma membrane. Activation of AKT, a major target of the insulin signaling pathway, by a cytosolic, membrane-bound chimera between the AP20187-inducible FV2E dimerization domain and the cytosolic protein tyrosine kinase domain of the insulin receptor was not affected by ER stress. Hence, signaling events in the UPR, such as activation of the JNK mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinases or the pseudokinase TRB3 by the ER stress sensors IRE1α and PERK, do not contribute to inhibition of signal transduction in the insulin signaling pathway. Indeed, pharmacologic inhibition and genetic ablation of JNKs, as well as silencing of expression of TRB3, did not restore insulin sensitivity or rescue processing of newly synthesized insulin receptors in ER-stressed cells.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung 12–13 Jahre alte Konidien von 5 Aspergillus niger-Rassen keimten später als 12 Monate alte und junge, etwa 4 Tage alte, wobei die Versuchstemperatur grundsätzlich ohne Bedeutung war, falls sie Keimung gestattete.Verzögert war nach mikroskopischen Beobachtungen sowohl die der eigentlichen Keimung vorausgehende Quellung der Sporen, als auch die Keimung selbst.Die spätere Keimung der älteren Konidien beruhte zu einem geringen Teil auf stärkerer Austrocknung, die eine mechanische Wasseraufnahme erschwerte, in der Hauptsache jedoch war sie eine Folge des Alters, eine Alterserscheinung.Hatte Keimung stattgefundeu, so war kein Unterschied festzustellen in der Waschstumsstärke und der Konidienfruktifikation zwischen den Mycelien, die auf ungleichalterige Konidien zurückgingen; sie breiteten sich auf Nähragarplatten gleich schnell aus, bildeten auf Nährlösungen Decken von gleichem Gewicht und entwickelten Konidien von nor maler Form und Farbe.Die Untersuchungen wurden 1943/44 in der pharmakognostischen Abteilung der Botanischen Anstalten Breslau durchgeführt.  相似文献

Mutants and mobilizing plasmids were developed as genetic tools in Alcaligenes eutrophus CH34. In order to map the chromosome, spontaneous and ethyl methane sulphonate (EMS)-induced mutants (mostly auxotrophs) were isolated. Another source of mutants was provided by the phenomenon of temperature-induced mortality and mutagenesis that is observed at 37° C and is characteristic of many metallotolerant strains of A. eutrophus. Plasmid pULB113 (RP4::miniMu) was used to map the available mutations. Twenty-five loci were ordered in a circular map. pMOL50, a rearranged derivative of plasmid pMOL28, which was obtained in a survivor at 37° C and displayed chromosome mobilizing activity (Cma+), was also used to mobilize chromosomal markers: resulting linkages were stronger than with pULB113, allowing confirmation of the circularity of the A. eutrophus CH34 chromosome with a small number of crosses.  相似文献
