The rates of oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide release of primitive hunters and weaver spiders, the Chilean Recluse spider Loxosceles laeta Nicolet (Araneae: Sicariidae) and the Chilean Tiger spider Scytodes globula Nicolet (Araneae: Scytodidae), are analyzed, and their relationship with body mass is studied. The results are compared with the metabolic data available for other spiders. A low metabolic rate is found both for these two species and other primitive hunters and weavers, such as spiders of the families Dysderidae and Plectreuridae. The metabolic rate of this group is lower than in nonprimitive spiders, such as the orb weavers (Araneae: Araneidae). The results reject the proposition of a general relationship for metabolic rate for all land arthropods (related to body mass) and agree with the hypothesis that metabolic rates are affected not only by sex, reproductive and developmental status, but also by ecology and life style, recognizing here, at least in the araneomorph spiders, a group having low metabolism, comprising the primitive hunters and weaver spiders, and another group comprising the higher metabolic rate web building spiders (e.g. orb weavers). 相似文献

Desmosomes entirely similar to those of the deeper layers of ruminal epithelium are seen in the luminal layers of the early fetal ruminal epithelium. In the older fetuses, these desmosomes have morphological features that reveal to some extent the occurrence of processes of keratinization. Heart failure is a major clinical problem worldwide. Previous studies have demonstrated an important role for G protein-coupled receptors, including protease-activated receptors (PARs), in the pathology of heart hypertrophy and failure. Activation of PAR-2 on cardiomyocytes has been shown to induce hypertrophic growth in vitro. PAR-2 also contributes to myocardial infarction and heart remodeling after ischemia/reperfusion injury. In this study, we found that PAR-2 induced hypertrophic growth of cultured rat neonatal cardiomyocytes in a MEK1/2 and p38 dependent manner. In addition, PAR-2 activation on mouse cardiomyocytes increased expression of the pro-fibrotic chemokine MCP-1. Furthermore, cardiomyocyte-specific overexpression of PAR-2 in mice induced heart hypertrophy, cardiac fibrosis, inflammation and heart failure. Finally, in a mouse model of myocardial infarction induced by permanent ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery, PAR-2 deficiency attenuated heart remodeling and improved heart function independently of its contribution to the size of the initial infarct. Assessment of the environmental factors that control species richness (S) is a central issue in ecology. In this study, aquatic macrophyte S was estimated in 235 sampling sites distributed in 8 arms of a large (1350 km2) subtropical reservoir (Itaipu Reservoir, Brazil). Morphometric variables (area, shoreline development and length of shoreline, all measured for each arm; n= 8) and environmental variables measured at each sampling site (extinction coefficient of light (k), electrical conductivity, fetch, distance from the main reservoir body; n = 235) were used to predict aquatic macrophyte S at two spatial scales. At arm scale, linear regression analysis indicated that length of shoreline was a better predictor of S than area. At sampling site scale, multiple regression analysis indicated that S was significantly predicted by electrical conductivity, fetch and distance from the main body. However, other relationships with predictive interest was demonstrated by using non-traditional regression approaches. This analysis started by the visual inspection of scatter plots. The bivariate relationship between S and fetch, for example, showed an envelope or a `left triangle' pattern. The relationship between the number of submerged species and k showed an asymmetrical left triangle pattern. Using randomization procedures, it was demonstrated that these patterns were not generated by chance alone. Beta diversity (estimated within the arms) was significantly and positively correlated with spatial environmental variability. Overall, these results indicate that the prediction of aquatic macrophytes assemblage variables in large waterbodies, specially S, is more complex than previous studies have suggested. 相似文献

Summary Two siblings with a short-limb dwarfing condition which we call acromesomelic dysplasia, Hunter-Thompson type are reported. Abnormalities are limited to the limbs and limb joints in this severe form of dwarfism. The middle and distal
segments of the limbs are most affected. The lower limbs are more affected than the upper. We are aware of one previously
published case of this entity reported by A. G. W. Hunter and M. W. Thompson in 1976. Dislocations of the elbows and ankles
were present in all three patients and dislocations of the hips and knees in two. One of the siblings who did not have hip
and knee dislocations clinically resembled Grebe chondrodysplasia, another severe acromesomelic dwarfing condition. However,
radiological analysis suggests that while acromesomelic dysplasia, Hunter-Thompson type and Grebe chondrodysplasia are related,
they are not identical. Grebe chondrodysplasia has been established as an autosomal recessive trait. It appears probable that

This study represents the first attempt to study the population dynamics of Guiana dolphins (Sotalia guianensis), by evaluating a set of demographic parameters. The population of the Caravelas River estuary, eastern Brazil, was systematically monitored through a long‐term mark‐recapture experiment (2002–2009). Abundance estimates revealed a small population (57–124 dolphins), comprised of resident dolphins and individuals that temporarily leave or pass through the study area. Temporary emigration from the estuary to adjacencies (γ″= 0.33 ± 0.07 SE) and return rate (1 ?γ′= 0 .67) were moderate and constant, indicating that some dolphins use larger areas. Survival rate (?= 0.88 ± 0.07 SE) and abundance were constant throughout the study period. Power analysis showed that the current monitoring effort has high probability of detecting abrupt population declines (1 ?β= 0.9). Although the monitoring is not yet sensitive to subtle population trends, sufficient time to identify them is feasible (additional 3 yr). Despite such apparent stability, this population, as many others, inhabits waters exposed to multiple human‐related threats. Open and closed population modeling applied to photo‐identification data provide a robust baseline for estimating several demographic parameters and can be applied to other populations to allow further comparisons. Such synergistic efforts will allow a reliable definition of conservation status of this species. 相似文献
