It has long been assumed that serial homologues are ancestrally similar—polysomerism resulting from a “duplication” or “repetition” of forms—and then often diverge—anisomerism, for example, as they become adapted to perform different tasks as is the case with the forelimb and hind limbs of humans. However, such an assumption, with crucial implications for comparative, evolutionary, and developmental biology, and for evolutionary developmental biology, has in general not really been tested by a broad analysis of the available empirical data. Perhaps not surprisingly, more recent anatomical comparisons, as well as molecular knowledge of how, for example, serial appendicular structures are patterned along with different anteroposterior regions of the body axis of bilateral animals, and how “homologous” patterning domains do not necessarily mark “homologous” morphological domains, are putting in question this paradigm. In fact, apart from showing that many so-called “serial homologues” might not be similar at all, recent works have shown that in at least some cases some “serial” structures are indeed more similar to each other in derived taxa than in phylogenetically more ancestral ones, as pointed out by authors such as Owen. In this article, we are taking a step back to question whether such assumptions are actually correct at all, in the first place. In particular, we review other cases of so-called “serial homologues” such as insect wings, arthropod walking appendages, Dipteran thoracic bristles, and the vertebrae, ribs, teeth, myomeres, feathers, and hairs of chordate animals. We show that: (a) there are almost never cases of true ancestral similarity; (b) in evolution, such structures—for example, vertebra—and/or their subparts—for example, “transverse processes”—many times display trends toward less similarity while in many others display trends toward more similarity, that is, one cannot say that there is a clear, overall trend to anisomerism. 相似文献
1. The aim of our study was to investigate the possibility that maternal separation, an experimental model for studies of early environmental influences, has an effect on postnatal neurogenesis in neurogenic pathway—the rostral migratory stream (RMS). 2. Rat pups were subjected to maternal separation daily for 3 h, starting from the first postnatal day (P1) till P14 or P21. In the first two groups, brains were analyzed at the age of P14 and P21, respectively. In the third group, after 3 weeks of maternal separation, 1 week of normal rearing was allowed, and the brains were analyzed at P28. The controls matched the age of maternally separated animals. Dividing cells were labeled by bromodeoxyuridine; dying cells were visualized by Fluoro-Jade C and nitric oxide (NO) producing cells by NADPH-diaphorase histochemistry. 3. Quantitative analysis of proliferating cells in the RMS showed that maternal separation decreased the number of dividing cells in all experimental groups. This decrease was most prominent in the caudal part of the RMS. The amount of dying cells was increased at the end of 3 weeks of maternal separation as well as 1 week later. The number of differentiated nitrergic cells in the RMS was increased at the end of 2 or 3 weeks of maternal separation, respectively. Besides quantitative changes, maternally separated animals showed an accelerated maturation of nitrergic cells. 4. Our results indicate that an exposure of rats to adverse environmental factors in early postnatal periods may induce acute site-specific changes in the RMS neurogenesis. 相似文献
A highly unusual method of reconstruction was used to advantage following a massive pectoral chest-wall tumor resection that entailed unavoidable section of the subclavian and axillary vessels and the cords of the brachial plexus, irretrievably encased by tumor in the axilla. Since leaving the defunctionalized upper limb in place would have served no purpose, utilization of the total arm flap became the method of choice for an easy, reliable reconstruction for this particular defect. 相似文献
The concentration of molybdenum was measured in whole blood samples of 418 (244 males and 174 females) apparently normal donors ranging in age from 18 to 27-years old and living in nine different locations in the Mérida State (Venezuela). The geometric mean concentration of molybdenum of 418 subjects was of 2.66+/-0.66 microgL(-1) (range: 1.20-4.80 microgL(-1)). The levels of molybdenum in whole blood samples found in this work were of 2.57+/-0.52 and 2.54+/-0.51 (range: 1.20-4.80 and 1.40-4.20) microgL(-1) for males and females, respectively. The data of the content molybdenum in whole blood had no statistical correlation with age, sex or height above the sea level of the sampling sites. However, there was a tendency to decrease the levels of the element in those sampling sites located in highlands (> or = 1900 m above the sea level). This variability may be due to the source of molybdenum from the soil to the food chain that has affected its levels in donors from these areas under study. Fecal coliform-positive, capsule-forming Klebsiella pneumoniae cells were observed in high densities (10(4) to 10(8) CFU/100 ml) in two commercial batches of frozen orange juice concentrate at a cannery in Puerto Rico. Contamination of both lots was gross and included off colors and odors. Isolates of K. pneumoniae from these concentrates revealed growth at 4, 25, and 34 degrees C with generation times from 0.39 to 1.84 h. 相似文献
Lactobacillus salivarius A3iob was administered to productive colonies belonging to commercial apiaries of small beekeepers (around 30–50 hives each one), from four departments of the province of Jujuy (Argentina): Yala, Tilquiza, El Carmen, and Los Alisos. The incidence of Varroa destructor and Nosema spp., before and after winter, was monitored during 2 years of study (2014–2015). Depending on the geographical location of each apiary and the application time, a monthly dose of the bacteria (105 CFU/mL) reduced the levels of varroasis between 50 and 80%. Interestingly, L. salivarius A3iob cells remitted the percentage of the mites to undetectable values in an apiary treated with flumethrin (at Yala, Yungas region).
On the other hand, the spore levels of Nosema spp. in the lactobacilli-treated colonies also depended on the apiary and the year of application, but a significant decrease was mainly observed in the post-winter period. However, at Rivera (El Carmen’s department), no significant changes were detected in both parameters.
These results obtained after 2 years of work suggest that delivering L. salivarius A3iob cells to the bee colonies can become a new eco-friendly tool to cooperate with the control of these bees’ pests.
