ASP-56, a new actin sequestering protein from pig platelets with homology to CAP, an adenylate cyclase-associated protein from yeast.

A new 56 kDa actin-binding protein (ASP-56) was isolated from pig platelet lysate. In falling ball viscosimetry it caused a reduction in viscosity that could be attributed to a decrease in the concentration of polymeric actin. Fluorescence measurements with NBD-labelled actin showed reduction of polymeric actin, too. These results could be explained by sequestering of actin in a non-polymerizable 1:1 ASP-56/actin complex. Sequencing of about 20 tryptic peptides of ASP-56 and comparison with known sequences revealed about 60% homology to the adenylate cyclase-associated protein (CAP) from yeast.

Teratological studies with prostaglandin E2 in chick embryos

Prostaglandin E₂ (20–100 μg) was lethal to a relatively high percentage of chick embryos when administered at 48 hours incubation; no such effect was observed after 72 hours incubation. A relatively high incidence of abnormal embryos, which increased with the dose-levels of prostaglandin, was induced at both 48 and 72 hours incubation compared to the controls. However, this difference was statistically significant only in embryos treated with 100 μg prostaglandin at 48 hours incubation. The embryos showed no signs of growth retardation.     

Preliminary clinical experience with the antiarrhythmic effect of PGF2a

A total dosage up to 1 mg PGF_2a as i.v. infusions of 10–40 μg/min. was investigated on patients with arrhythmias of several kinds. We found therapeutic effects in 5 of 6 patients with constant extrasystoles and in one patient with digitalis - induced partial AV-block respectively. In 3 of 4 patients with acute tachyarrhythmias the results were not convincing, probably due to a dosage not high enough. An increase of the diastolic stimulation threshold usually seen with other antiarrhythmics was not to be observed in 3 patients. The mechanism of action of PGF_2a has not yet been clarified.     

Early Social Networks Predict Survival in Wild Bottlenose Dolphins

A fundamental question concerning group-living species is what factors influence the evolution of sociality. Although several studies link adult social bonds to fitness, social patterns and relationships are often formed early in life and are also likely to have fitness consequences, particularly in species with lengthy developmental periods, extensive social learning, and early social bond-formation. In a longitudinal study of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops sp.), calf social network structure, specifically the metric eigenvector centrality, predicted juvenile survival in males. Additionally, male calves that died post-weaning had stronger ties to juvenile males than surviving male calves, suggesting that juvenile males impose fitness costs on their younger counterparts. Our study indicates that selection is acting on social traits early in life and highlights the need to examine the costs and benefits of social bonds during formative life history stages.
