According to the ideomotor theory, actions are represented in terms of their perceptual effects, offering a solution for the correspondence problem of imitation (how to translate the observed action into a corresponding motor output). This effect-based coding of action is assumed to be acquired through action-effect learning. Accordingly, performing an action leads to the integration of the perceptual codes of the action effects with the motor commands that brought them about. While ideomotor theory is invoked to account for imitation, the influence of action-effect learning on imitative behavior remains unexplored. In two experiments, imitative performance was measured in a reaction time task following a phase of action-effect acquisition. During action-effect acquisition, participants freely executed a finger movement (index or little finger lifting), and then observed a similar (compatible learning) or a different (incompatible learning) movement. In Experiment 1, finger movements of left and right hands were presented as action-effects during acquisition. In Experiment 2, only right-hand finger movements were presented during action-effect acquisition and in the imitation task the observed hands were oriented orthogonally to participants’ hands in order to avoid spatial congruency effects. Experiments 1 and 2 showed that imitative performance was improved after compatible learning, compared to incompatible learning. In Experiment 2, although action-effect learning involved perception of finger movements of right hand only, imitative capabilities of right- and left-hand finger movements were equally affected. These results indicate that an observed movement stimulus processed as the effect of an action can later prime execution of that action, confirming the ideomotor approach to imitation. We further discuss these findings in relation to previous studies of action-effect learning and in the framework of current ideomotor approaches to imitation.  相似文献

The accessory reproductive glands of Melanoplus sanguinipes comprise two bilateral masses of 16 tubules each, distinguishable in sexually mature insects as four white, ten short hyaline, one long hyaline, and a seminal vesicle. Over most of its length, the wall of each tubule consists of a simple glandular epithelium resting on a basal lamina, surrounded by a thin layer of circular muscle. However, near the junction with the ejaculatory duct, the wall of each tubule has a much thickened circular muscle layer and squamous or cuboidal epithelium, the region serving to regulate movement of secretion into the ejaculatory duct. Interdigitation of adjacent epithelial cells is common, and several kinds of specialized junctions occur. In the glandular region, all epithelial cells appear the same and may be flattened, cuboidal, or columnar depending on the tubule type. Except for those of the seminal vesicle, the glandular epithelial cells share ultrastructural features typical of cells engaged in the synthesis of protein for export. Despite these general similarities, in most instances subtle differences occur in the cellular ultrastructure of the epithelia of each tubule and in the appearance of their luminal secretions, suggesting that the tubules are functionally specialized.  相似文献

The extinction of the Irish elk Megaloceros giganteus has traditionally thought to have been caused in one way or another by the enormous antlers of the males. Recently, a popular hypothesis for the Irish elk extinction has been their inability to cope with the nutritional demands of growing such large antlers during worsening habitat conditions. However, this hypothesis is weakened by several previously unaddressed and biologically unreasonable assumptions. We discuss these assumptions and conclude that, because antler mass is expected to have been evolutionarily labile, nutritionally sensitive, and ontogenetically variable and male mortality is expected to have had limited impact on population growth, the large antlers of Irish elk probably had little to do with the extinction. We focus on the reproductive energetics of females as a possible contributor to extinction, and model the nutritional demands of producing precocial cursorial young. Our model shows the reproductive output of females being reduced by 50% due to changes in the length of the growing season at the end of the Pleistocene when most populations of Irish elk went extinct. The model was validated with parameters from the extant wapiti, which was predicted to maintain high levels of reproduction during the Pleistocene climatic deterioration. Thus, nutritional stress on reproductive females is likely to have contributed more to the Irish elk extinction than nutritional stress on large-antlered males.  相似文献

Although systematic, quantitative assessment of environmental health risks is a staple of regulatory decision-making, complaints regarding its perceived failures and shortcomings are an intrinsic feature of the policy landscape. In this article, we (a) catalog the classic criticisms of conventional health risk assessment, (b) create a typology that orders the critiques according to their focus on either input errors or output biases, and (c) identify selected allegations that fall within each category. We also note that the risk assessment–risk management paradigm has evolved over the past several decades, partially in accordance with the general direction and spirit of these classic critiques. The debate continues today along familiar lines invoking the traditional critiques and rebuttals outlined here.  相似文献

Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease, has long been known to be capable of forming aggregates and colonies. It was recently demonstrated that Borrelia burgdorferi aggregate formation dramatically changes the in vitro response to hostile environments by this pathogen. In this study, we investigated the hypothesis that these aggregates are indeed biofilms, structures whose resistance to unfavorable conditions are well documented. We studied Borrelia burgdorferi for several known hallmark features of biofilm, including structural rearrangements in the aggregates, variations in development on various substrate matrices and secretion of a protective extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) matrix using several modes of microscopic, cell and molecular biology techniques. The atomic force microscopic results provided evidence that multilevel rearrangements take place at different stages of aggregate development, producing a complex, continuously rearranging structure. Our results also demonstrated that Borrelia burgdorferi is capable of developing aggregates on different abiotic and biotic substrates, and is also capable of forming floating aggregates. Analyzing the extracellular substance of the aggregates for potential exopolysaccharides revealed the existence of both sulfated and non-sulfated/carboxylated substrates, predominately composed of an alginate with calcium and extracellular DNA present. In summary, we have found substantial evidence that Borrelia burgdorferi is capable of forming biofilm in vitro. Biofilm formation by Borrelia species might play an important role in their survival in diverse environmental conditions by providing refuge to individual cells.  相似文献

1. A high cholesterol diet caused guinea pig erythrocytes to become sensitive to lysis by cholesterol oxidase (CO), a protein not hemolytic to normal cells. 2. Lysis was associated with conversion of membrane cholesterol to its oxidation product (delta-4-cholesten-3-one). 3. Intravenous injection of CO to hypercholesterolemic guinea pigs produced a reduction in serum cholesterol, but was not lethal as it was in rabbits. 4. Homogenized spleen, liver and kidney from the hyperlipidemic animals were sensitive to in vitro cholesterol oxidation while tissues from non-lipemic animals were resistant to modification.  相似文献
