The Indian Purple frog, Nasikabatrachus sahyadrensis, occupies a basal phylogenetic position among neobatrachian anurans and has a very unusual life history. Tadpoles have a large ventral oral sucker, which they use to cling to rocks in torrents, whereas metamorphs possess adaptations for life underground. The developmental changes that underlie these shifts in habits and habitats, and especially the internal remodeling of the cranial and postcranial skeleton, are unknown. Using a nearly complete metamorphic series from free-living larva to metamorph, we describe the postembryonic skeletal ontogeny of this ancient and unique monotypic lineage. The torrent-dwelling larva possesses a dorsoventrally flattened body and a head with tiny dorsal eyes, robust lower and upper jaw cartilages, well-developed trabecular horns, and a definable gap between the trabecular horns and the tip of the snout. Unlike tadpoles of many other frogs, those of Nasikabatrachus retain larval mouthparts into late metamorphic stages. This unusual feature enables the larvae to maintain their clinging habit until near the end of metamorphosis. The subsequent ontogenetic shift from clinging to digging is correlated with rapid morphological changes and behavioral modifications. Metamorphs are equipped with a shortened tibiafibula and ossified prehallical elements, which likely facilitate initial digging using the hind limbs. Subsequently, the frogs may shift to headfirst burrowing by using the wedge-shaped skull, anteriorly positioned pectoral girdle, well-developed humeral crests and spatula-shaped forelimbs. The transition from an aquatic life in torrents to a terrestrial life underground entails dramatic changes in skeletal morphology and function that represent an extreme in metamorphic remodeling. Our analysis enhances the scope for detailed comparative studies across anurans, a group renowned for the diversity of its life history strategies. 相似文献

The enzymatic extracts from seven species of microalgae (Pediastrum duplex, Dactylococcopsis fascicularis, Halochlorococcum porphyrae, Oltmannsiellopsis unicellularis, Achnanthes
longipes, Navicula sp. and Amphora coffeaeformis) collected from three habitats (freshwater, tidal pool, and coastal benthic) at Jeju Island in Korea were investigated for
their antioxidant activity. Of the extracts tested, the AMG 300 L (an exo 1, 4-α-d-glucosidase) extract of P. duplex, the Viscozyme extract of Navicula sp., and the Celluclast extract of A. longipes provided the most potential as antioxidants. Meanwhile, the Termamyl extract of P. duplex in an H2O2 scavenging assay exhibited an approximate 60% scavenging effect. In this study, we report that the DNA damage inhibitory
effects of P. duplex (Termamyl extract) and D. fascicularis (Kojizyme extract) were nearly 80% and 69% respectively at a concentration of 100 μg/ml. Thus, it is suggested that the microalgae
tested in this study yield promising DNA damage inhibitory properties on mouse lymphoma L 5178 cells that are treated with
H2O2. Therefore, microalgae such as P. duplex may be an excellent source of naturally occurring antioxidant compounds with potent DNA damage inhibition potential. 相似文献

Compounds based on the 2,3-distyrylindole scaffold were found to exhibit bactericidal properties upon irradiation with white light. At the concentration of 1?μM, the lead compound 1 completely (ca. 109?CFU/mL) eradicated such Gram-positive organisms as S. aureus (MRSA, MSSA), E. faecalis (VRE), S. pyogenes and S. mutans when irradiated with white light for 2?min. At the concentration of 5?μM and in the presence of polymyxin E at non-bactericidal 1.25?μg/mL concentration, 1 also showed a 7-log to 9-log reductions in bacterial counts of such Gram-negative organisms as multi-drug resistant (MDR) A. baumannii, MDR P. aeruginosa, E. coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRE: KPC and NDM-1), also when irradiated with white light for 2?min. The structure-activity relationship studies revealed that unsubstituted at benzene rings 2,3-distyrylindole 2 was most potent and gave a 5-order of magnitude eradication of a MRSA strain at the concentration of 30?nM upon irradiation with white light. Initial mechanistic experiments revealed the disruption of bacterial cell membrane, but indicated that singlet oxygen production, which is commonly associated with photodynamic therapy, may not play a role in the bactericidal effects of the 2,3-distyrylindoles. 相似文献

Despite renewed interest in the biogeography and evolutionary history of Old World tree frogs (Rhacophoridae), this family still includes enigmatic frogs with ambiguous phylogenetic placement. During fieldwork in four northeastern states of India, we discovered several populations of tree hole breeding frogs with oophagous tadpoles. We used molecular data, consisting of two nuclear and three mitochondrial gene fragments for all known rhacophorid genera, to investigate the phylogenetic position of these new frogs. Our analyses identify a previously overlooked, yet distinct evolutionary lineage of frogs that warrants recognition as a new genus and is here described as Frankixalus
gen. nov. This genus, which contains the enigmatic ‘Polypedates’ jerdonii described by Günther in 1876, forms the sister group of a clade containing Kurixalus, Pseudophilautus, Raorchestes, Mercurana and Beddomixalus. The distinctiveness of this evolutionary lineage is also corroborated by the external morphology of adults and tadpoles, adult osteology, breeding ecology, and life history features. 相似文献

Virginols A–C are three new withanolides containing an epoxylactol at the side chain. They were isolated from the aerial parts of Physalis virginiana Miller. Structures of these compounds were determined by analyses of their spectroscopic data, including 1D and 2D NMR. The structure of virginol A was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. The anti-inflammatory activity of virginols was evaluated in the TPA-induced ear mouse edema model. 相似文献

A morphological analysis ofPhysalis and several closely related genera, with emphasis on a group of species known as “atypicalPhysalis,” showed that two of the atypical species are better treated as a distinct genus.Tzeltalia is described and two new combinations are made:T. amphitricha andT. calidaria. Restricted to the highlands of Chiapas, Mexico, and adjacent Guatemala,Tzeltalia is distinguished fromPhysalis by a combination of characters including shrubby habit; fasciculate flowers; lobed corolla; scabrate pollen; and non-invaginated,
partially open, coriaceous, and reticulate-veined fruiting calyx.

13C proton decoupled cross-polarization magic-angle spinning nmr spectra of lysozyme are reported as a function of hydration. Increases in hydration level enhance the resolution of the spectra, particularly in the aliphatic region, but has no significant effect on either the rotating frame proton spin–lattice relaxation time or the cross-relaxation time. The enhancement in spectral resolution with hydration is attributed to a decrease in the distribution of isotropic chemical shifts, which reflects a decrease in the distribution of conformational states sampled by the protein. Changes in the distribution of isotropic chemical shifts occur after the addition of water to the charged groups as coverage of the polar side chains and peptide groups takes place. The onset of this behavior occurs at a hydration level of about, 0.1–0.2 g water/g protein and is largely complete at about 0.3 g water/g protein, the same hydration range where changes in the heat capacity are observed. That hydrogen exchange of buried protons can occur at hydration levels significantly lower than those at which changes in the distribution of conformational states are first observed suggests that some motions that mediate exchange are already present in the dry protein. The preservation of efficient dipolar coupling indicates that the conformational rearrangements that do-occur on hydration are small and do not involve any significant overall expansion of free volume or weakening of interactions that would increase the reorientational freedom of protein groups. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 相似文献
