As a result of recent fieldwork in north-east Morocco, a new woody Malvaceae species, Lavatera valdesii Molero & J.M. Monts., is described here. The morphological characters that link it to other species in Sect. Olbia (Medik.) DC. are discussed, as are those traditionally used in defining the species that make up this section. A recently described species of this group, Lavatera plazzae Atzei, is established here as a synonym of L. stenopetala Coss. & Durieu ex Batt., a species previously considered as an endemic of east Algeria. On the basis of morphological characters, we propose the exclusion of both L. thuringiaca and L. cashmiriana Cambess. from Sect. Fifteen chromosome counts of six Artemisia taxa and one species of each of the genera Brachanthemum, Hippolytia, Kaschgaria, Lepidolopsis and Turaniphytum are reported from Kazakhstan. Three of them are new reports, two are not consistent with previous counts and the remainder are confirmations of very scarce (one to four) earlier records. All the populations studied have the same basic chromosome number, x = 9, with ploidy levels ranging from 2x to 6x. Some correlations between ploidy level, morphological characters and distribution are noted.  相似文献

Phenology and anatomy of the reproductive phase of Abies pinsapo were studied. Male cones and female cones were differentiated in the autumn, and the dormant microsporangia contained pollen mother cells (PMCs) in the premeiotic stage. The male cones broke dormancy at the end of February when the pollen mother cells began meiosis. Pollen grains were shed at the five-celled stage at the end of April-early May. The female cones broke dormancy in mid-April. Anthesis took place at the end of April. No micropylar-pollination droplet was observed. After pollination the female cones developed quickly. The most important loss of cones occurred during the pollination period. The number of archegonia varied from one to three but two was most common. Fertilization took place at the end of June. The embryos developed during the summer, and seeds were dispersed in autumn. The results are discussed in relation to other conifers.  相似文献

We tested the performance of molecular markers and biometric traits in the identification of hybrids between closely related mountain pine (Pinus uncinata) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). A plastid DNA marker and a set of morphological and anatomical needle traits were applied in analyses of individuals from several sympatric stands of the species and a single‐species' population from southern Europe, used as a reference. A polymerase chain reaction‐restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR‐RFLP) marker from the plastid trnLtrnF region and morphological and anatomical traits clearly discriminated between the pure species. Significant differences were found between P. uncinata and P. sylvestris, mostly in the shape of epidermal cells and the number of stomata. Four putative hybrids with P. sylvestris morphology, but with P. uncinata plastid DNA haplotypes, were found in a population from Sierra de Gúdar near Valdelinares, the southernmost locality of the latter species in eastern Spain. Discrimination analyses between and within populations placed these individuals on the edge of an agglomeration of P. sylvestris individuals. Nineteen chromosome counts of 12 Artemisia species are reported from Armenia and Iran. Three of them are new reports, sewn are not consistent with previous counts and the remaining are confirmations of very scarce (one to three) previous data. Two basic chromosome numbers (x = 8 and 9) were found, each with several ploidy levels. Chromosome number reduction arising from fusion homozygosity was noted, confirming earlier studies.  相似文献

The cpDNA restriction variation in 39 populations representing a geographical sampling of 18 species of Androcymbium in southwestern and northern Africa was examined to assess the historical biogeography of the genus. The cpDNA phylogeny indicates that the disjunction between South and North Africa is best explained by the dispersal of southern African ancestors into North Africa. Divergence time estimates suggest that the geographic range of the genus may have extended considerably north (perhaps to Tanzania and Kenya) prior to the global desiccation of Africa in the Miocene. Further expansion of the genus northward was probably stalled until climatic changes in the late Miocene brought about the gradual replacement of a subtropical woodland savanna with the arid landscape that gave rise to the Sahara. Aridification of the northern quarter of the continent provided the ecological conditions for fostering the expansion of Androcymbium along the Mediterranean fringe (probably east to west) and its introduction into the Canary Islands. Unlike their South African congeners, the northern species have experienced expansions, fragmentations, and local extinctions in response to the severe climatic shifts in this area during the Pliocene-Pleistocene. According to our divergence time estimates, the arid track may have already existed as a continuous area connecting southern and northern Africa in the late Miocene.  相似文献

We have studied some characteristics of marcescent leaves (withered retained leaves) and senescent leaves in Quercus subpyrenaica, a tree species that plays a major role in the climatic transition forests between temperate and mediterranean environments in north-eastern Spain. Leaves were taken from the upper and lower halves of the tree crown, both in the south- and north-exposed parts of the tree. Leaves receiving low photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) undergo autumnal senescence, which is associated with decreases in photosynthetic pigments and decreases in the chlorophyll a to chlorophyll b ratio. Leaves receiving higher PPFD underwent senescence at a later date. Leaves situated in the upper, south-exposed part of the tree, which receive the highest PPFD, showed no signs of senescence and remained photosynthetically active for a longer period of time, marcescence occurring suddenly at the end of the season. Marcescence is unlikely to cause an improvement in nutrient recycling, since the removal of nutrients proceeded similarly in marcescent and senescent leaves. Marcescence may increase the time-span of the assimilation capacity for a significant period of time during September and October, when high light intensities and mild temperatures occur. The phenomena triggering marcescence may be related to low temperatures.  相似文献

1. The painted lady Vanessa cardui is a long‐range migratory butterfly that performs an annual multi‐generational round‐trip between Europe and Africa. Each autumn it returns to northwest (NW) Africa, presumably to track changes in resources that follow a predictable climate‐related spatio‐temporal pattern. 2. Data on the abundance of adult and immature stages in the Maghreb in 2014–2016 are used to test several hypotheses regarding the autumn migration of this species. 3. A strong seasonal migratory strategy was confirmed by the all but total absence of the species in NW Africa at the end of summer and the arrival of huge numbers migrants in October and November. Migration was timed to coincide with an increase in host plant availability but not with any increase in nectar sources. 4. Flower abundance was the main predictor of adult abundance in autumn, with Ditrichia viscosa, Verbesina encelioides, and Medicago sativa being key resources that attracted enormous numbers of butterflies to oases, ruderal habitats, and oueds. The distribution of immature stages was strongly predicted by host plant abundance (with traditional agriculture representing the most important breeding habitat) and latitude (most breeding occurred in the south of the region). Also, both adults and immature stages were more common inland than in coastal areas. 5. Changes in age structure of the adult population were also noted. The number of fresh adults slowly increased, indicating that butterflies did not return in a single wave and that the first offspring of the first returners were already emerging when some butterflies were still arriving.  相似文献

Variation in fruit-set, cone crop, seed viability and seedlingvigour ofAbies pinsapoBoiss. were recorded at two differentstand densities during four consecutive years (1990–1993).In this period only two cone crops were observed (1991 and 1992).Extreme differences were found in response to density. In thelow density stand trees had a greater seed-cone production andfruit-set in each of the two crop years. Also, significant differenceswere recorded in the seed crop viability: in the low densityzone average seed viability was only 21% whereas in the highdensity one it was 82%. Other important differences such ascone size, number of seeds per cone and seedling vigour wererecorded at different densities. The results suggest that bothpollen availability and pollen origin in low density standsinfluence the frequency and quality of filled seeds. The resultshave practical implications for the management ofA. pinsapoforseed production and subsequent reforestation.
