The early life stages of the diamond squid Thysanoteuthis rhombusfrom early embryogenesis to post-hatching (0–7 days old)were observed through laboratory incubation using egg massescollected in the southern Sea of Japan. The egg diameter andmantle length increased during embryonic development throughhatching. Mantle-length growth was linear over time, and thegrowth rate was significantly higher at 25°C than at 20°C.The inner yolk was located on the dorsal side of the mantlecavity and increased in volume through hatching. Immediatelyafter they hatched, the hatchlings remained on the bottom ofculture plates with their ventral sides facing up, but 2–3days after hatching they began to swim with their dorsal sidesfacing up. Feeding experiments were conducted, but none of thehatchlings fed. Statolith growth increments were shown to formdaily. Ontogenetic changes that occur from fertilization throughpost-hatching are discussed. (Received 8 June 2005; accepted 2 November 2005)  相似文献

Xenopus embryos were dissociated into cells and cultured in Ca2+-free medium to study the relationship between the cell-to-cell interaction and macromolecular synthesis. Under the conditions, cells did not aggregate at all, and remained isolated even while they were dividing actively. Synthesis of DNA and protein as studied by the incorporation of (3H)thymidine and (3H)leucine proceeded as in the aggregating cells. Also, the activity to synthesize rRNA, 5S RNA, and heterogeneous RNA as determined by the incorporation of (3H)uridine was not impaired. Such an increase in the activity of alkaline phosphatase, as occurs in embryos after the gastrula stage, was found to be inhibited greatly when early-blastula cells were cultured in the non-aggregating conditions. However, we found here that the inhibition was not observed with cells isolated from late-blastulae. Therefore, it appears that the increase in the activity of alkaline phosphatase during post-gastrular stages is dependent on some cellular commitment which may be established by cell-to-cell contact during the blastula stage.  相似文献

The bug Andrallus spinidens (F.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) is a polyphagous predator of insect larvae, which is distributed in tropical and warm temperate zones worldwide. Seasonal occurrence and diapause induction of this bug were studied in a population in Miyazaki, southern Kyushu, Japan. The field research showed that A. spinidens produces three or four generations a year and is most abundant from mid‐summer to autumn. Reproductive activity of field‐collected adults decreased from late summer to autumn, indicating that this bug enters adult diapause in autumn. Only adults were found in early spring and these were reproductive. Laboratory experiments showed that, irrespective of photoperiod, adult diapause is induced at lower temperatures (≤22.5°C), whereas it is avoided at higher temperatures (≥25°C). Ambient temperature falls across the critical range from late summer to autumn. Thus, the bug clearly overwinters in adult diapause induced by low temperatures and this diapause is terminated during the course of winter.  相似文献

CELL interaction, an important process in morphogenesis, seems to regulate in some way the expression of genetic information, thereby giving rise to differentiation of the cell; but little is known about the mechanism of such regulation at the molecular level. Our results suggest that the synthesis of alkaline phosphatase is regulated at the translation level in embryonic cells.  相似文献
