Protecting habitats for charismatic vertebrates can provide an ‘umbrella’ for less conspicuous organisms, especially when these are threatened by the same processes. However, such a conservation scheme is vulnerable to the extirpation of the focal species. We studied wider biodiversity values in long protected black stork (Ciconia nigra) nest sites, which were abandoned by the bird and thus legally subject to de-listing. In 20 abandoned nest sites in Estonia, we (i) mapped breeding birds within 600 m from the stork nest, and (ii) carried out time-limited surveys of lichens, polypore fungi, vascular plants and bryophytes in 2-ha plots. The breeding bird assemblages (64 species recorded) included 19 red-listed species, and showed no clear aggregation to the immediate surroundings of the stork nest. We recorded 740 plant and fungal species, of which 134 (18%) were of conservation concern (nationally protected, red-listed or extremely rare). Across the 2-ha plots, the numbers of the species of conservation concern varied more than three-fold (maximum 42 species), being affected notably by dead wood accumulation over time and presence of nemoral broad-leaved trees. The results demonstrate that many abandoned nest sites of the black stork have broader biodiversity significance, both due to the bird’s habitat requirements and the natural development during the protection. Expanding the umbrella function to sites abandoned by a focal species, but intact from anthropogenic degradation, can thus be a cost-effective conservation approach due to its low additional administrative burden. In most jurisdictions, the assessment procedure for such situations should be formalized, however.

Background

Purpose of the study was to investigate alterations in midbrain serotonin transporter (SERT) binding in patients with epilepsy and symptoms of depression compared to patients with epilepsy with no symptoms of depression.

Methods

We studied 12 patients with epilepsy (7 patients had focal and 5 had generalized epilepsy syndromes). The presence of self-reported symptoms of depression was assessed using Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the Emotional State Questionnaire (EST-Q). The binding potential of the SERT was assessed by performing brain single photon emission tomography (SPET) using the SERT radioligand 2-((2-((dimethylamino)methyl)phenyl)thio)-5-(123)iodophenylamine (123I-ADAM).

Results

Seven patients had BDI and EST-Q subscale scores greater than 11 points, which was interpreted as the presence of symptoms of depression. We found that 123I-ADAM binding was not significantly different between patients with epilepsy with and without symptoms of depression. In addition, 123I-ADAM binding did not show a significant correlation to either BDI or EST-Q depression subscale scores and did not differ between patients with focal vs. generalized epilepsy.

Conclusion

The results of our study failed to demonstrate alterations of SERT binding properties in patients with epilepsy with or without symptoms of depression.

Changes in landscape structure and environmental conditions due to habitat fragmentation can have significant effects on plant populations. Decreasing genetic diversity and changing population structure can reduce plant fitness and influence the long-term persistence of populations. Dry calcareous grasslands in Estonia have witnessed a large decline in area within the last 80 years, but due to extinction debt, the species richness in these grasslands has not yet responded to this decline. In these calcareous grasslands, we studied genetic diversity, phenotypic performance and population characteristics of a common habitat-specialist grass, Briza media. A decrease in genetic diversity was associated with a decrease in plant reproductive output. In addition, we found that some fitness components of B. media showed a delayed response to landscape changes. Specifically, plant height and germination success were related to historical rather than to current landscape parameters, indicating a time-lagged response of plant performance to habitat fragmentation. Dependence on historical landscape structure may thus result in a future decline in population fitness even if habitat loss and fragmentation no longer continue. The documented effect of current environmental conditions, however, shows that fitness-related traits are already slowly adapting to the changing conditions. Our results indicate that even common habitat-specialist species can be susceptible to landscape changes and be threatened by decreased population performance in the future.  相似文献

Artificial drainage (ditching) is widely used to increase timber yield in northern forests. When the drainage systems are maintained, their environmental impacts are likely to accumulate over time and along accompanying management, notably after logging when new forest develops on decayed peat. Our study provides the first comprehensive documentation of long-term ditching impacts on terrestrial and arboreal biodiversity by comparing natural alder swamps and second-generation drained forests that have evolved from such swamps in Estonia. We explored species composition of four potentially drainage-sensitive taxonomic groups (vascular plants, bryophytes, lichens, and snails), abundance of species of conservation concern, and their relationships with stand structure in two-ha plots representing four management types (ranging from old growth to clearcut). We found that drainage affected plot-scale species richness only weakly but it profoundly changed assemblage composition. Bryophytes and lichens were the taxonomic groups that were most sensitive both to drainage and timber-harvesting; in closed stands they responded to changed microhabitat structure, notably impoverished tree diversity and dead-wood supply. As a result, natural old-growth plots were the most species-rich and hosted several specific species of conservation concern. Because the most influential structural changes are slow, drainage impacts may be long hidden. The results also indicated that even very old drained stands do not provide quality habitats for old-growth species of drier forest types. However, drained forests hosted many threatened species that were less site type specific, including early-successional vascular plants and snails on clearcuts and retention cuts, and bryophytes and lichens of successional and old forests. We conclude that three types of specific science-based management tools are needed to mitigate ditching effects on forest biodiversity: (i) silvicultural techniques to maintain stand structural complexity; (ii) context-dependent spatial analysis and planning of drained landscapes; and (iii) lists of focal species to monitor and guide ditching practices.  相似文献

Light availability is a fundamental factor that controls the productivity and distribution of macroalgae and is highly variable, both spatially and temporally, in subtidal coastal systems. Our comprehension of how macroalgae respond to such variability is a significant knowledge gap that limits our understanding of how light influences the structure and productivity of these environments. Here, we examined the pigment characteristics of individual species, and for the first time the whole community, within one low‐light, and one high‐light kelp‐forest system in southern New Zealand. The aim was to quantify the range of pigmentation seen within the two kelp‐forests which differed in irradiance regime. Light availability was 33% and 64% greater at the high‐light compared to the low‐light site at 2 and 10 m depth, respectively. Results suggested Phaeophyceae species at deeper depths in the low‐light site may be living at the edge of their photosynthetic ability and pigment synthesis appeared significantly restricted. Even with greater investment in the pigment fucoxanthin, biomass of Phaeophyceae species was significantly lower in the low‐light site. Highly pigmented Rhodophyceae species made a greater proportional contribution to community biomass within the low‐light site where they likely possessed a photosynthetic advantage. This work helps explain discrepancies in community structure between the two study sites and explores the complex relationship between irradiance and photoacclimation. The comparison of community pigment concentration holds potential as a tool for assessing the relative degree of photoacclimation occurring between sites and provides a proxy of photosynthetic cost under a specific light regime.  相似文献

We aimed to examine whether habitat preferences of raccoon dogs Nyctereutes procyonoides and badgers Meles meles can be revealed by using a non-invasive method, latrine surveys. We searched for latrines of these carnivores with scat detection dogs in SW Finland. We compared the results of latrine surveys with the results of a radio-tracking study conducted simultaneously in the same area. Our results showed that latrine surveys and radio-tracking gave fairly similar results: both methods revealed that raccoon dogs favoured deciduous forests, open woodland and reed beds but avoided fields, and badgers favoured deciduous and pine forests but avoided fields, gardens and reed beds. Latrines of both species were often located in the core areas but also along home range borders. Latrine survey revealed possible competition for space between the native badgers and alien raccoon dogs. Latrine survey is a non-invasive method, which gives accurate location points of animals. It could be developed further by combining it with bait-marking and by training the dogs to show us other signs of animals besides latrines.  相似文献

Abstract. Fine-scale structure of a species-rich grassland was examined for seasonal changes caused by manipulated changes in the availability of above and below-ground resources (additional illumination with the help of mirrors and fertilization) in a field experiment. If changes induced by fertilization — which are expected to lead to a reduction in small-scale diversity —are due to intensified light competition, they should be compensated for by additional light input. Permanent plots of 40 cm × 40 cm were sampled by the point quadrat method at three angles (60°, 90° and 120° from the horizontal North-South direction), using a laser beam to position the quadrats, in early July and early September. The applied treatments did not cause apparent changes in plant leaf orientation. The degree of spatial aggregation of biomass increased seasonally in fertilized, non-illuminated plots: greater productivity at a constant light supply led to a faster growth rate of potentially dominant species, as compared to the subordinate ones. Additional illumination mitigated this effect of fertilization, indicating that the observed changes in biomass aggregation were due to increased light competition. There was a considerable seasonal decrease of variance ratio (ratio of observed variance of richness at a point and variance expected at random) in fertilized only and in illuminated only plots. In fertilized plots this was due to the positive relationship between biomass aggregation and expected variance of richness. Biomass constancy occurs to be inversely related to deficit in variance of richness. In illuminated plots, in contrast, only the observed variance of richness decreased seasonally, indicating a more uniform use of space by different species. Evidently, a deficit in variance of richness can be caused by drastically different processes, showing that the variance ratio statistic may not have a significant explanatory value in fine-scale community studies.  相似文献
