Abstract 1. We monitored three different‐sized wood ant (Formica aquilonia Yarrow) mounds over a 3‐year period in Finnish boreal forests dominated by Norway spruce (Picea abies Karst.), to assess the seasonal temperature dependency of ant activity. Additionally, we also monitored Norway spruce trees around the mounds for descending honeydew foragers. 2. The amount of collected honeydew and prey and its composition, as well as the carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) in honeydew and invertebrate prey was also investigated. 3. The number of warm days (average temperature above 20 °C) and the amount of precipitation differed among the years. Ant activity at the mounds (but not on the trees) was highly correlated with air temperature throughout the ant‐active season (May–September), but ant activity in spring and autumn was lower than in summer at similar temperatures. During all 3 years, honeydew played a major role in wood ant nutrition (78–92% of dry mass). Invertebrate prey was mainly Diptera (on average 26.2%), Coleoptera (12.5%), Aphidina (9.3%), and Arachnoida (8.5%). 4. The total amounts of C, N, and P input brought into the ant mounds in the form of food (both honeydew and prey) on the stand level were 12.6–39.0, 1.6–4.6 and 0.1–0.4 kg ha?1 year?1, respectively, which is equivalent to 2–6%, 12–33% and 27–58% of the fluxes in annual needle litterfall in typical boreal Norway spruce forests. Thus, wood ants can play a significant role in short term and local N and P cycling of boreal forest ecosystems.  相似文献

The effects of crude root extracts of Eichhornia crassipes (Marts) Solms on Chironomus ramosus Chaudhuri eggs and larvae are studied under laboratory conditions. Egg masses of C. ramosus that are subjected to varying concentrations of exudates (final concentrations 0.25–2.5%) show 100% viability. However, larvae reared further at these concentrations reveal a dose–response relationship, with an LC50 value of 1.33% and an LC90 value of 2.05%. A striking feature is the occurrence of supernumerary salivary glands in larvae (three glands per larva) reared in the 1%, 1.25%, 1.5% and 1.75% extracts. This deviates from the normal two glands per larva and may be explained by altered growth as a result of the putative bioactive compounds present in the hyacinth extracts. In nature, hyacinth and midges co‐exist in many freshwater habitats, implying that hyacinth compounds present from natural leaching could be encountered by the larvae. These preliminary findings suggest that hyacinth can influence the larval development of midges, giving rise to long‐term ecological implications.  相似文献

1. The diurnal variations in the habitat choice of the periodically plant-attached cladoceran Sida crystallina together with light environment and predator abundance were studied.

The density of S. crystallina attached to floating leaves of Nuphar lutea increased between 18:00 and 20:00 hours, when light intensity underneath the leaves was temporarily increased, and decreased again when light intensity declined. A proportion of S. crystallina remained in the swimming mode underneath the leaves even during daylight, indicating that the water column sheltered by the leaves is safer than the open water.
3. In the water adjacent to the leaves, the density of S. crystallina increased steeply in the dark. The increase was not accompanied by a decrease in S. crystallina attached to plant leaves, indicating that the nocturnal increment in the open water density of S. crystallina was due to migration from daytime refuges other than floating leaves.
4. Sida crystallina was most intensively consumed by perch ( Perca fluviatilis ). Predation threat by fish had weaker effects on the density of S. crystallina attached to plant leaves than on cladocerans in the adjacent water. Cladocerans underneath floating plant leaves, whether attached or not, are probably less vulnerable to fish predation than those outside the leaf cover.
5. The results suggested that light intensity is the proximate factor regulating the attachment of zooplankton to the lower surfaces of floating macrophyte leaves. Light intensity has a positive effect on the density of S. crystallina attached to the floating leaves and a negative effect on density in the water. Predation threat by fish has a strong effect on the migration of zooplankters into the open water habitat.  相似文献

The ontogenetic development and the regional distribution of histamine (HA) and histamine-N-methyltransferase (HMT, EC 2.1.1.8) in guinea pig brain and pituitary gland were studied. The samples were taken every fourth day beginning on the 28th foetal day. The HA concentration in the brains of the youngest foetuses was almost undetectable. A significant increase in HA concentrations occurred between days 40 and 44, which coincides with the period of rapid growth of nerve cell processes in this species. After this, a steep increase continued to the end of gestation in the hypothalamus, and to a lesser degree in the medulla-midbrain and in the forebrain. In all parts of the brain the adult HA levels were reached by the time of birth. The HMT activity increased 15-fold from the 28th foetal day to the adult and reached ca. 80% of the adult activity by the time of birth. The HMT activity developed earlier in the midbrain than in the forebrain or in the cerebellum, but after the birth the regional distribution of HMT was fairly even. In the pituitary gland the HA concentration and HMT activity increased hundredfold and tenfold, respectively. The developmental patterns of HA and HMT in the guinea pig brain give support to the concept that HA might be a neurotransmitter in the brain.  相似文献

Antigenic analysis of potato virus A particles and coat protein   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Five monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) were prepared to particles of potato virus A (PVA), isolate B11. In immunoblots, MAbs A1D8 and A5B6 reacted only with full length molecules of PVA coat protein (CP). Pepscan tests with overlapping octapeptides representing the whole sequence of PVA CP showed that the epitope detected by MAb A5B6 is contained in its N-terminal octapeptide. MAbs A9A4, A3H4 and A6B8 reacted with CP molecules that lacked about 5 kD of sequence at their end(s) and detected epitopes at residues 52 to 62, 64 to 73 and 75 to 82 respectively, all of which lie in the protease-resistant core of the CP. The epitope which reacts with MAb A3H4 is in a region predicted to be hydrophobic and is not detected in intact virus particles, indicating it is a cryptotope. In contrast, MAbs A6B8 and A9A4 reacted with freshly purified PVA particles but more strongly with partially degraded ones. Pepscan tests with polyclonal antibodies to PVA isolate B11 identified five additional immunogenic sequences in PVA CP and showed that regions at the N-termini of the intact and core molecules are immunodominant. PVA isolate B11 was not transmitted by aphids, and its CP N-terminal octapeptide contains the sequence DAS, which is associated with aphid-non-transmissibility in other potyviruses. MAb A5B6, which detects this region, reacted strongly in ELISA with three out of four other aphid-non-transmissible PVA isolates but only weakly with three aphid-transmissible ones, suggesting that differences in N-terminal sequence may underlie most of the differences in aphid transmissibility.  相似文献

Sex chromosome-related anomalies engender plethora of conditions leading to male infertility. Hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (HH) is a rare but well-known cause of male infertility. Present study was conducted to ascertain possible consensus on the alterations of the Y-linked genes and loci in males representing hypogonadism (H), which in turn culminate in reproductive dysfunction. A total of nineteen 46, XY males, clinically diagnosed with H (11 representative HH adults and eight prepubertal boys suspected of having HH) were included in the study. Sequence-tagged site screening, SRY gene sequencing, fluorescence in situ hybridization mapping (FISH), copy number and relative expression studies by real-time PCR were conducted to uncover the altered status of the Y chromosome in the patients. The result showed random microdeletions within the AZFa (73%)/b (78%) and c(26%) regions. Sequencing of the SRY gene showed nucleotide variations within and outside of the HMG box in four males (21%). FISH uncovered mosaicism for SRY, AMELY, DAZ genes and DYZ1 arrays, structural rearrangement for AMELY (31%) and duplication of DAZ (57%) genes. Copy number variation for seven Y-linked genes (2–8 rounds of duplication), DYZ1 arrays (495–6201copies) and differential expression of SRY, UTY and VCY in the patients’ blood were observed. Present work demonstrates the organizational vulnerability of several Y-linked genes in H males. These results are envisaged to be useful during routine diagnosis of H patients.  相似文献
