The vertical distributions of bacteria, picoalgae,protozoan and metazoan zooplankton, and phytoplanktonin the highly eutrophic Lake Köyliönjärvi(SW Finland) were studied monthly during the period ofice-cover in January-April 1996. For comparison, wealso provide some data on the distributions of theplankton during the summer. The whole watercolumn remained oxic during the ice-covered period,although the near-bottom oxygen concentrations werealways very low. The heterotrophic nanoflagellateswere more abundant in winter than in summer, butciliates, picoalgae and bacteria were more numerous insummer. In general both zooplankton and phytoplanktonhad low biomass during the ice-covered period.However, the biomass of the diatom Aulacoseiraislandica ssp. islandica was high under the icein April. The calanoid copepod Eudiaptomusgraciloides was the dominant zooplankton species fromJanuary to March, but had almost disappeared by thebeginning of April and did not increase again until inJune. ABSTRACT To date, little is known about the impact of season on infant sleep. In higher latitudes, the duration of daily light time varies substantially between different seasons, and environmental light is one potential factor affecting sleep. In this cohort study, one-night polysomnography (PSG) was performed on 72 healthy 8-month-old infants in 2012 and 2013 to study the effect of season on the sleep architecture of young infants in Finland. The children were divided into four subgroups, according to the amount of light during their birth season and the amount of light during the season of the PSG recordings, corresponding to spring, summer, autumn, and winter. We found that the season of birth did not have an impact on the infants’ sleep architecture at 8 months of age, but the season of the PSG recording did have an effect on several sleep variables. In the PSGs conducted during the spring, there was less N3 sleep and more N2 sleep than in the PSGs conducted during the autumn. In addition, there was more fragmented sleep during spring than autumn. According to our data, the season has an effect on the sleep architecture of young infants and should, therefore, be considered when evaluating the PSG findings of young infants. The exact mechanisms behind this novel finding remain unclear, however. The findings imply that infants` sleep is affected by the season or light environment, as is the case in adult sleep. Since potential explanatory factors, such as direct natural or artificial light exposure and the melatonin levels of the infants, were not controlled, more research is needed in the future to better understand this phenomenon. 相似文献

Marked endocrine alterations occur after delivery. Most women cope well with these changes, but the postpartum period is associated with an increased risk of depressive episodes. Previous studies of emotion processing have focused on maternal–infant bonding or postpartum depression (PPD), and longitudinal studies of the neural correlates of emotion processing throughout the postpartum period in healthy women are lacking. In this study, 13 women, without signs of post partum depression, underwent fMRI with an emotional face matching task and completed the MADRS-S, STAI-S, and EPDS within 48 h (early postpartum) and 4–6 weeks after delivery (late postpartum). Also, data from a previous study including 15 naturally cycling controls assessed in the luteal and follicular phase of the menstrual cycle was used. Women had lower reactivity in insula, middle frontal gyrus (MFG), and inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) in the early as compared to the late postpartum assessment. Insular reactivity was positively correlated with anxiety in the early postpartum period and with depressive symptoms late postpartum. Reactivity in insula and IFG were greater in postpartum women than in non-pregnant control subjects. Brain reactivity was not correlated with serum estradiol or progesterone levels. Increased reactivity in the insula, IFG, and MFG may reflect normal postpartum adaptation, but correlation with self-rated symptoms of depression and anxiety in these otherwise healthy postpartum women, may also suggest that these changes place susceptible women at increased risk of PPD. These findings contribute to our understanding of the neurobiological aspects of the postpartum period, which might shed light on the mechanisms underlying affective puerperal disorders, such as PPD. 相似文献

Ephrin (Eph) receptor tyrosine kinases fall into two subclasses (A and B) according to preferences for their ephrin ligands. All published structural studies of Eph receptor/ephrin complexes involve B‐class receptors. Here, we present the crystal structures of an A‐class complex between EphA2 and ephrin‐A1 and of unbound EphA2. Although these structures are similar overall to their B‐class counterparts, they reveal important differences that define subclass specificity. The structures suggest that the A‐class Eph receptor/ephrin interactions involve smaller rearrangements in the interacting partners, better described by a ‘lock‐and‐key’‐type binding mechanism, in contrast to the ‘induced fit’ mechanism defining the B‐class molecules. This model is supported by structure‐based mutagenesis and by differential requirements for ligand oligomerization by the two subclasses in cell‐based Eph receptor activation assays. Finally, the structure of the unligated receptor reveals a homodimer assembly that might represent EphA2‐specific homotypic cell adhesion interactions. 相似文献

High activity of ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), the rate-limiting enzyme of polyamine synthesis, is typically present in rapidly
proliferating normal and malignant cells. The mitotically inactive steroidogenic cells in rodent testis and ovaries, however,
also display high ODC activity. The activity of ODC in these cells responds to luteinizing hormone, and inhibition of ODC
reduces the production of steroid hormones. Polyamines and ODC also control proliferation of germ cells and spermiogenesis.
The activity of ODC, especially in proliferating cells, is regulated by antizyme inhibitor (AZIN). This protein displaces
ODC from a complex with its inhibitor, antizyme. We have previously identified and cloned a second AZIN, i.e. antizyme inhibitor
2 (AZIN2), which has the highest levels of expression in brain and in testis. In the present study, we have used immunohistochemistry
and in situ hybridization to localize the expression of AZIN2 in human gonads. We found a robust expression of AZIN2 in steroidogenic
cells: testicular Leydig cells and Leydig cell tumors, in ovarian luteinized cells lining corpus luteum cysts, and in hilus
cells. The results suggest that AZIN2 is not primarily involved in regulating the proliferation of the germinal epithelium,
indicating a different role for AZIN1 and AZIN2 in the regulation of ODC. The localization of AZIN2 implies possible involvement
in the gonadal synthesis and/or release of steroid hormones. 相似文献

The Eph receptors and their ephrin ligands play crucial roles in a large number of cell–cell interaction events, including those associated with axon pathfinding, neuronal cell migration and vasculogenesis. They are also involved in the patterning of most tissues and overall cell positioning in the development of the vertebrate body plan. The Eph/ephrin signaling system manifests several unique features that differentiate it from other receptor tyrosine kinases, including initiation of bi-directional signaling cascades and the existence of ligand and receptor subclasses displaying promiscuous intra-subclass interactions, but very rare inter-subclass interactions. In this review we briefly discuss these features and focus on recent studies of the unique and expansive high-affinity Eph/ephrin assemblies that form at the sites of cell–cell contact and are required for Eph signaling initiation. The impact of nutrient enrichment on the phytoplankton community structure, and particularly cyanobacteria, was studied in a 3-week mesocosm experiment conducted in August 2001 in the Archipelago Sea, a part of the northern Baltic Sea. The factorial design experiment included daily additions of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) at two mass ratios, 1N:1P and 7N:1P, respectively, additions of iron (Fe) and a synthetic chelator, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). The floating enclosures (400 l) were sampled for analyses of phytoplankton biomass and community structure, phytoplankton primary production, chlorophyll a, nutrients, and hepatotoxins. Chlorophyll a concentration, phytoplankton biomass and primary production increased most in the 7N:1P treatment. The increase was mainly due to an abundant growth of chlorophytes (Dictyosphaerium subsolitarium, Kirchneriella spp., Monoraphidium contortum, and Oocystis spp.), pennate diatoms (especially Nitzschia spp.), dinophytes and the chroococcalean cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. The nutrient enrichments had no effect on the total biomass of N2-fixing cyanobacteria. Nevertheless, the biomass of Anabaena spp. was highest in the enrichments with a low N/P ratio. Chlorophyll a concentration and total phytoplankton biomass were not affected by Fe or EDTA, but Fe alone had a positive effect on the chlorophyte Kirchneriella sp. The N2-fixing cyanobacteria Aphanizomenon sp. responded positively to Fe alone and to both Fe and EDTA added together. The hepatotoxin concentration increased during the experiment, but no clear responses to nutrient enrichments were found. Our study showed species-specific responses to nutrient enrichments among the N2-fixing cyanobacteria. Although the total phytoplankton production was not Fe-limited; the availability of Fe clearly affected the phytoplankton community structure. 相似文献
