Hypoxia-inducible factor 1α regulates branching morphogenesis during kidney development

The kidneys are exposed to hypoxic conditions during development. Hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF), an important mediator of the response to hypoxia, is believed to have an important role in development. However, the relationship between HIF and branching morphogenesis has not been elucidated clearly.     

Association between light exposure at night and manic symptoms in bipolar disorder: cross-sectional analysis of the APPLE cohort

ABSTRACT

Previous studies have found that keeping the room dark at night was associated with a decrease in manic symptoms for patients with bipolar disorder (BD). However, the association between light at night of real-life conditions and manic symptoms is unclear. We investigated the association between bedroom light exposure at night and manic symptoms in BD patients. One-hundred and eighty-four outpatients with BD participated in this cross-sectional study. The average light intensity at night during sleep was evaluated using a portable photometer for seven consecutive nights. Manic symptoms were assessed using the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS), and scores ≥5 were treated as a “hypomanic state.” The median (interquartile range) YMRS score was 2.0 (0–5.0), and 52 (28.2%) participants were in a hypomanic state. The prevalence of a hypomanic state was significantly higher in the participants with an average light intensity at night exposure of ≥3 lux than in those with <3 lux (36.7% versus 21.9%; P = .02). In multivariable logistic regression analysis adjusted for BD type, depressive symptoms, sleep duration, and daytime physical activity, the odds ratio (OR) for a hypomanic state was significantly higher for the participants with an average light intensity at night exposure of ≥3 lux than for those with <3 lux (OR: 2.15, 95% confidence interval: 1.09–4.22, P = .02). This association remained significant at the cutoff value of YMRS score ≥6 (OR: 2.51, 95% confidence interval: 1.15–5.46; P = .02). The findings of this study indicate bedroom light exposure at night is significantly associated with manic symptoms in BD patients. Although the results of this cross-sectional investigation do not necessarily imply causality, they may serve to inform beneficial nonpharmacological intervention and personalized treatment of BD patients.     

Fractal property of eye movements in schizophrenia

 On the basis of a temporal model of animal behavior we conducted temporal analysis of eye movements in schizophrenic subjects (n=10) and normal controls (n=10). We found a fractal property in schizophrenic subjects, the fixation time of eye movement during reading ambiguous and difficult sentences showing a clear inverse power law distribution. Indoor environmental study and post occupancy evaluation in an office environment

1. 1. The objective of this paper is to investigate the indoor environment from the viewpoint of interaction between physical environment and the human responses. The field survey has been conducted over 1 year.

2. 2. A continuous measurement has been carried out for 1 week and distribution of variables have been measured for 1 day.

3. 3. The attitude of workers was investigated by a questionnaire.

4. 4. As the result, average luminance represented more than 1000 lx in the new building, in contrast with less tha 300 lx in the existing building.

5. 5. There was a significant difference of the occupants' response to the light environment between the two buildings.

6. 6. Measured thermal conditions are on the edge of the ASHRAE comfort envelope in summer, and in the neighborhood of the lower dry limit of the envelope in spring.

7. 7. The occupants' evaluations were remarkably changed before and after the moving. The office environment is better than that of the factory.

Apparent gene conversion in an Escherichia coli rec+ strain is explained by multiple rounds of reciprocal crossing-over

Summary Gene conversion, the non-reciprocal transfer of sequence information between homologous DNA sequences, has been reported in lower eukaryotes, mammals and in Escherichia coli. In an E. coli rec ⁺ strain, we established a plasmid carrying two different deleted neo genes (neoDL and neoDR) in an inverted orientation and then selected for homologous recombination events that had reconstructed an intact neo ⁺ gene. We found some plasmids that had apparently experienced intramolecular gene conversion. Further evidence, however, suggests that they are products of multiple rounds of reciprocal crossing-over,apparently involving two plasmid molecules. First, most of the Neo⁺ clones contained multiple types of Neo⁺ plasmids, although the frequency of producing the neo ⁺ clones was low. Second, all the neo ⁺ clones also contained, as a minority, one particular form of dimer, which can be formed by reciprocal crossing-over between neoDL of one plasmid molecule and neoDR of another plasmid molecule. Third, in reconstruction experiments, we cloned and purified this dimer and transferred it back into the rec ⁺ cells. The dimer gave rise to clones containing multiple types of neo ⁺ recombinant monomers, including those apparent gene conversion types, and containing only few molecules of this dimer plasmid.     

Low-pressure microwave-induced helium plasma emission spectrometry: Vaporization characteristics of metal chlorides,nitrates, and sulfates

A low-pressure microwave-induced helium plasma serves as an excitation source for metal chlorides, nitrates, and sulfates vaporized from a filament, resulting in fractional vaporization and differential sensitivities of detection of the elements depending on the vapor pressures of their salts. The shapes of the single emission peaks, which are simple in the presence of potassium chloride, become complex and may double in number.     

The effect of pyrazines on the metabolism of tryptophan and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide in the rat Evidence of the formation of a potent inhibitor of aminocarboxy-muconate-semialdehyde decarboxylase from pyrazinamide

The intraperitoneal or oral administration of pyrazinamide and pyrazinoic acid (pyrazine 2-carboxylic acid) resulted in a marked increase of the NAD content in rat liver. The injections of pyrazine and pyrazine 2,3-dicarboxylic acid exhibited no significant effect on the hepatic NAD content. The boiled extract obtained from liver and kidney of rat injected with either pyrazinamide or pyrazinoic acid exhibited a potent inhibitory effect on the aminocarboxymuconate-semialdehyde decarboxylase (EC 4.1.1.45) activity in either liver or kidney, although pyrazinamide or pyrazinoic acid per se did not inhibit the enzyme activity. The unknown inhibitor of aminocarboxymuconate-semialdehyde decarboxylase was dialysable and heat-stable, and mostly excreted in urine by 6 and 12 h after injection of pyrazinoic acid and pyrazinamide, respectively. Pyrazine 2,3-dicarboxylic acid, pyrazine, nicotinamide, nicotinic acid, tryptophan, anthranilic acid, 5-hydroxyanthranilic acid and quinolinic acid exhibited no significant effect on the aminocarboxymuconate-semialdehyde decarboxylase activity in liver and kidney at the concentration of 1 mM in the reaction mixture. The expired ¹⁴CO₂ from l-[benzen ring-U-¹⁴C]tryptophan was markedly decreased by the pyrazinamide injection, while the urinary excretion of ¹⁴C-labeled metabolites from l-tryptophan, mainly quinolinic acid, was markedly increased. These results suggest that the glutarate pathway of l-tryptophan was strongly inhibited by the inhibitor produced after the administration of pyrazinoic acid and pyrazinamide. Pyrazinamide but not pyrazinoic acid also exhibited a significant inhibition of the nuclear enzyme poly(ADP-ribose) synthetase in rat liver.
