We used measurements from airborne imaging spectroscopy and LiDAR to quantify the biophysical structure and composition of vegetation on a dryland substrate age gradient in Hawaii. Both vertical stature and species composition changed during primary succession, and reveal a progressive increase in vertical stature on younger substrates followed by a collapse on Pleistocene-aged flows. Tall-stature Metrosideros polymorpha woodlands dominated on the youngest substrates (hundreds of years), and were replaced by the tall-stature endemic tree species Myoporum sandwicense and Sophora chrysophylla on intermediate-aged flows (thousands of years). The oldest substrates (tens of thousands of years) were dominated by the short-stature native shrub Dodonaea viscosa and endemic grass Eragrostis atropioides. We excavated 18 macroscopic charcoal fragments from Pleistocene-aged substrates. Mean radiocarbon age was 2,002 years and ranged from < 200 to 7,730. Genus identities from four fragments indicate that Osteomeles spp. or M. polymorpha once occupied the Pleistocene-aged substrates, but neither of these species is found there today. These findings indicate the existence of fires before humans are known to have occupied the Hawaiian archipelago, and demonstrate that a collapse in vertical stature is prevalent on the oldest substrates. This work contributes to our understanding of prehistoric fires in shaping the trajectory of primary succession in Hawaiian drylands.  相似文献

Rab proteins, one of the subfamilies of ras-like small GTP-binding proteins, are attached to cellular compartments or transport vesicles and may determine the specificity of fusion between these compartments and vesicles. It has been proposed that they alternate between a membrane-bound and a cytosolic state during their functional cycle. We have used a photo-crosslinking approach to identify their cytosolic interaction partners. In vitro synthesized rab5 was cross-linked in the presence of ATP mainly to three cytosolic proteins of 52, 65, and 85 kDa. Sucrose density gradient centrifugation of the cross-linked products suggested that they were part of a 10-14 S complex. Furthermore, rab5 was cross-linked to these and additional cytosolic proteins of 42, 48, and 160 kDa in the absence of ATP. Unexpectedly, upon ATP depletion of the cytosol cross-linked and noncross-linked rab5 was found in a sedimentable high molecular weight structure. Other members of the rab subfamily, but not N-ras, also sedimented under these conditions. Electrophoretic and electron microscopic analysis of the pelleted material revealed that it contained actin filament bundles and intermediate filaments. Our data suggest that cytosolic rab proteins interact with several proteins in a 10-14 S complex, and that the rab proteins may interact directly or indirectly via this complex with the cytoskeleton.  相似文献

The behaviour of a homologous series of methyl hydroxyhexadecanoates at the air/water interface is described and compared to the behaviour of the respective parent acids in an effort to cast further light on the interfacial behaviour of simple molecules containing two different hydrophilic groups. Expansion of the isotherms upon esterification is observed for the 2-, 3-, and 9-hydroxy compounds, the extent of which is interpreted in terms of changes in head group interactions. The 16-hydroxy compounds show anomalous surface pressure and surface potential behaviour which is interpreted as being due to an inversion of the molecule at the interface, i.e., the hydroxyl group acts as the primary group in the methyl ester, whereas it acts as the secondary polar group in the acid.  相似文献

In this review, we present a conceptual model which links plant communities and saprotrophic microbial communities through the reciprocal exchange of growth-limiting resources. We discuss the numerous ways human-induced environmental change has directly and indirectly impacted this relationship, and review microbial responses that have occurred to date. We argue that compositional shifts in saprotrophic microbial communities underlie functional responses to environmental change that have ecosystem-level implications. Drawing on a long-term, large-scale, field experiment, we illustrate how and why chronic atmospheric N deposition can alter saprotrophic communities in the soil of a wide-spread sugar maple (Acer saccharum) ecosystem in northeastern North America, resulting in the slowing of plant litter decay, the rapid accumulation of soil organic matter, and the accelerated production and loss of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Compositional shifts in soil microbial communities, mediated by ecological interactions among soil saprotrophs, appear to lie at the biogeochemical heart of ecosystem response to environmental change.  相似文献

Insect societies are normally closed entities from which alien individuals are excluded. The occasional fusion of unrelated colonies of the thelytokous ant Platythyrea punctata is therefore puzzling, because it strongly intensifies competition among nestmates for the replacement of an old reproductive. Most colonies of P. punctata have only one or few reproductives, which produce female offspring from unfertilized eggs, and therefore have a clonal structure. Fusion leads to multi‐clone colonies. We compared the occurrence of dominance and policing behavior between single‐ and double‐clone colonies. We find that the frequency of aggression is higher in double‐clone colonies, but that individuals do not preferentially direct attacks toward non‐clonemates. This matches observations in other species that social insects perceive genetic homogeneity but are not capable of reliable discrimination among nestmates of different degree of relatedness.  相似文献

In acute ischemic stroke, time from symptom onset to intervention is a decisive prognostic factor. In order to reduce this time, prehospital thrombolysis at the emergency site would be preferable. However, apart from neurological expertise and laboratory investigations a computed tomography (CT) scan is necessary to exclude hemorrhagic stroke prior to thrombolysis. Therefore, a specialized ambulance equipped with a CT scanner and point-of-care laboratory was designed and constructed. Further, a new stroke identifying interview algorithm was developed and implemented in the Berlin emergency medical services. Since February 2011 the identification of suspected stroke in the dispatch center of the Berlin Fire Brigade prompts the deployment of this ambulance, a stroke emergency mobile (STEMO). On arrival, a neurologist, experienced in stroke care and with additional training in emergency medicine, takes a neurological examination. If stroke is suspected a CT scan excludes intracranial hemorrhage. The CT-scans are telemetrically transmitted to the neuroradiologist on-call. If coagulation status of the patient is normal and patient''s medical history reveals no contraindication, prehospital thrombolysis is applied according to current guidelines (intravenous recombinant tissue plasminogen activator, iv rtPA, alteplase, Actilyse).Thereafter patients are transported to the nearest hospital with a certified stroke unit for further treatment and assessment of strokeaetiology. After a pilot-phase, weeks were randomized into blocks either with or without STEMO care. Primary end-point of this study is time from alarm to the initiation of thrombolysis. We hypothesized that alarm-to-treatment time can be reduced by at least 20 min compared to regular care.  相似文献
