Korean species of the Genus Scaphobaeocera Csiki (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Scaphidiinae) in Korea

The genus Scaphobaeocera Csiki including three species ( S. dorsalis Löbl, S. inexpectata Löbl, S. pecki Löbl) is identified for the first time in Korea. A key to the species is given with diagnosis and illustrations of important morphological features.     

Little known Eucinetidae (Coleoptera: Scirtoidea) in Korea

The beetle family Eucinetidae, represented by Eucinetus haemorrhoidalis (Germar), is newly recorded from southern parts of the Korean Peninsula, extending its distributional range by several hundred kilometers to the south. A habitus photo and illustrations of the diagnostic characters of species are provided.     

Taxonomy of the Genus Zeadolopus Broun (Coleoptera: Leiodidae: Leiodinae) in Korea

A taxonomic study of the genus Zeadolopus Broun in Korea is presented. Two species, Zeadolopus chaosicus Daffner and Z. japonica (Champion), are recognized and the latter is recorded for the first time in Korea. A key, diagnoses, and illustrations of diagnostic characters are provided.     

THE EFFECT OF SOME BEVERAGES ON THE PERCEPTION OF SUCCEEDING BASIC TASTES

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect beverages have on subsequently perceived basic tastes. Two types of milk, Cola and water were used to rinse the mouth prior to conducting a Time Intensity study with basic taste solutions. From this some effects of the prior beverage onto the TI parameters was found. Especially Cola showed an effect on the intensity of the subsequently tasted sweet taste, and whole milk showed a stronger effect than skim milk. The effects showed both in size and timing of the basic taste intensities.     

First Record of the Family Passandridae in Korea (Coleoptera: Cucujoidea)

A taxonomic study of the Korean Passandridae is presented. The family, genus and species (Ancistria apicalis Reitter) are reported for the first time in Korea. Comparison with a lectotype was made. An illustration of the habitus and line drawings of diagnostic characters are provided.     

First records of Leiodytes nicobaricus (Redtenbacher) and Platambus stygius (Régimbart) in Korea (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae)

Two dytiscid beetle species, Leiodytes nicobaricus (Redtenbacher) and Platambus stygius (Régimbart), are identified for the first time in Korea. Diagnoses, habitus and scanning electron microscopy photographs, and line drawings of the diagnostic characters are provided.     

Bioluminescence Activity and Degradation Kinetics of Genetically Engineered Strain P. putida mt-2 RB 1401 in Soil System with m-Xylene

Strain RB1401 contains a plasmid with a fusion between the upper pathway promoter of the TOL plasmid xyl genes and a lux gene cassette. Bioluminescence activity appeared in the early period of biodegradation of m-xylene, and was observed at all tested conditions of temperature (15, 27, 35°C) and pH (5, 7, 9), showing in the range of 300 ～ 6100 RLU. Biokinetics of strain RB1401 in the presence of m-xylene were as follows: Y 0.56 mg/mg, μ_max 2.67 day^-1, and K_s 19.25 mg/L. A ratio of C:N(KNO₃):P(KH₂PO₄) = 100:8:1.5 and 0.01% (w/v) of H₂O₂ were chosen for optimum biostimulation conditions of RB1401 with m-xylene in soil system. These results demonstrate the capability of such a genetically engineered bacteria for the development of biomonitoring and bioremediation in soil environments contaminated with specific volatile organic compounds.
