Phylogenetic relationships of 18 Thlaspi s.l. species were inferred from nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequence data. These species represent all sections of the basic classification system of Schulz primarily based on fruit characters. The molecular phylogeny supported six clades that are largely congruent with species groups recognized by Meyer on the basis of differences in seed coat anatomy, i.e. Thlaspi s. s., Thlaspkeras, Moccaea {Raparia included), Microthhspi, Vania and Neurotropy. Some of these lineages include species which are morphologically diverse in fruit shape (e.g. Thlaspi s. s.: T. arvense - fruits broadly winged, T. ceratocarpum - fruits with prominent horns at apex, T. alliaceum - fruits very narrowly winged). Furthermore, the same fruit shape type is distributed among different clades. For instance, fruits with prominent horns at apex are found in Thlaspi s. s. ( T. ceratocarpum) and Thlaspiceras (T oxyceras). These results clearly indicate convergence in fruit characters previously used for sectional classification in Thlaspi s. l.  相似文献

The cytopharyngeal basket of Pseudomicrothorax dubius is used to ingest filamentous blue-green algae. The basket has three main components: a sheath of microfilaments, bundles of microtubules (the nemadesmata), and ribbons of microtubules. The ribbons of microtubules (nemadesmal lamellae) are adpressed to the food vacuole during ingestion. Cytochemical techniques show that both the lamellae and the microfilamentous sheath possess ATPase activity, but the reaction product appears under different conditions in the two cases. The presence of ATPase activity within the microtubular lattices of the feeding organelle suggests the capacity for active motility. Consequently the basket seems to have two motile systems, one may be used to constrict and dilate the cytopharynx while the other is used in the inward propulsion of the forming food vacuole.  相似文献

Tubulin-containing structures of the male germ cells of Drosophila hydei crossreact in indirect immu-nofluorescence microscopy with antibody directed against homogeneous porcine brain tubulin. There is no detectable difference in reactivity between germ cells of wildtype flies and the mutant l(3)pl (lethal-polyploid) which is characterized by microtubular abnormalities. However, the technique of indirect immunofluorescence microscopy allows the direct visualization of several abnormalities in the arrangement of the microtubular system of the mutant, particularly in the axonemal complex.  相似文献

Reproduction often comes at a cost of a reduction in body functions. In order to enhance their reproductive output, some insect species degenerate their thoracic muscles, typically resulting in reduced flight ability. From a life‐history trade‐off perspective, we expect the importance of body resource utilization to be amplified both with increased reproductive expenditure and with increased resource limitation. In this study, we measured age‐related changes in thorax weight, as a measure of flight muscle size, during a major part of the adult lifespan in males and females of the scorpionfly Panorpa vulgaris. The aim of the study was twofold: first to investigate whether scorpionflies have the potential to degenerate their flight muscles; second, and more importantly, to determine whether the magnitude of flight muscle degeneration is a plastic response in relation to resource availability, and if it differs between the sexes. The results clearly demonstrate that food availability does influence investment in flight muscle development. The build‐up of the thoracic muscles was strongly influenced by nutrient availability. Furthermore, the age‐related decrease in thorax weight was significantly different for males and females. Only females showed a strong age‐dependent decrease in thorax weight, indicative of muscle degeneration, yet no difference between food treatments was detected. For males, there was no significant directional change in thorax weight. Bioethanol production from sugarcane is discussed as an alternative energy source to reduce dependencies of regional economies on fossil fuels. Even though bioethanol production from sugarcane is considered to be a beneficial and cost‐effective greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation strategy, it is still a matter of controversy due to insufficient information on the total GHG balance of this system. Aside from the necessity to account for the impact of land use change (LUC), soil N2O emissions during sugarcane production and emissions of GHG due to preharvest burning may significantly impact the GHG balance. Based on a thorough literature review, we show that direct N2O emissions from sugarcane fields due to nitrogen (N) fertilization result in an emission factor of 3.87±1.16% which is much higher than suggested by IPCC (1%). N2O emissions from N fertilization accounted for 40% of the total GHG emissions from ethanol–sugarcane production, with an additional 17% from trash burning. If LUC‐related GHG emissions are considered, the total GHG balance turns negative mainly due to vegetation carbon losses. Our study also shows that major gaps in knowledge still exist about GHG sources related to agricultural management during sugarcane production, e.g. effects of irrigation, vinasse and filter cake application. Therefore, more studies are needed to assess if bioethanol from sugarcane is a viable option to reduce energy‐related GHG emissions.  相似文献

The inhibition of growth by different concentrations of CdCl2 in the range 4,5 × 10?7 to 5.6 × 10?7M was studied in the green alga Coelastrum proboscideum Bohlin in inorganic media at pH 4.3, 5.3 and 6.2. The factorial destgn of the experiments was evaluated as an analysis of 22 factors. Below pH 4.0 and above pH 6.5 growth was depressed without adding Cd. Cd concentrations exceeding 5.6 × 10?8M reduced algal growth significantly with a 50% inhibition at 5.6 × 10?7M Cd. The Cd concentration of 5.6 × 10?7M was less toxic at pH 6.2 than at pH 5.3 and 4.3, thus revealing a negative interaction between protons and Cd.  相似文献

The effect of stand age on soil respiration and its components was studied in a first rotation Sitka spruce chronosequence composed of 10‐, 15‐, 31‐, and 47‐year‐old stands established on wet mineral gley in central Ireland. For each stand age, three forest stands with similar characteristics of soil type and site preparation were used. There were no significant differences in total soil respiration among sites of the same age, except for the case of a 15‐year‐old stand that had lower soil respiration rates due to its higher productivity. Soil respiration initially decreased with stand age, but levelled out in the older stands. The youngest stands had significantly higher respiration rates than more mature sites. Annual soil respiration rates were modelled by means of temperature‐derived functions. The average Q 10 value obtained treating all the stands together was 3.8. Annual soil respiration rates were 991, 686, 556, and 564 g C m?2 for the 10‐, 15‐, 31‐, and 47‐year‐old stands, respectively. We used the trenching approach to separate soil respiration components. Heterotrophic respiration paralleled soil organic carbon dynamics over the chronosequence, decreasing with stand age to slightly increase in the oldest stand as a result of accumulated aboveground litter and root inputs. Root respiration showed a decreasing trend with stand age, which was explained by a decrease in fine root biomass over the chronosequence, but not by nitrogen concentration of fine roots. The decrease in the relative contribution of autotrophic respiration to total soil CO2 efflux from 59.3% in the youngest stand to 49.7% in the oldest stand was explained by the higher activity of the root system in younger stands. Our results show that stand age should be considered if simple temperature‐based models to predict annual soil respiration in afforestation sites are to be used.  相似文献

Although Charles Darwin wrote about flower polymorphism in the wild carrot, Daucus carota, the function of the conspicuous central dark floret is still unclear. We used video recordings to evaluate the functional significance of the dark central floret as a short‐distance signal for insects landing on the umbels and analyzed the location of landing points, landing orientation and visit duration. These parameters, as well as insect attraction did not differ on umbels with and without a dark central floret. Hence, we found no evidence for the role of the dark central floret in the pollination of D. carota. Umbels with a dark central floret, however, were parasitized significantly less often by the gall midge Kiefferia pericarpiicola than umbels without a dark central floret. We propose that the dark central floret may play a role in reducing parasite infestation by mimicking an already present gall or deterring oviposition of the gall midge by other means.  相似文献

Abstract: We used a 60-yr forest simulation of the Cherokee National Forest, Tennessee, USA, to model the effects of timber harvest and natural disturbance upon habitat availability for 6 songbird species: Acadian flycatcher (Epidonax virescens), blue-headed vireo (Vireo solitarius), chestnut-sided warbler (Dendroica pensylvanica), tufted titmouse (Parus bicolor), yellow-billed cuckoo (Coccyzus americanus), and yellow-throated warbler (Dendroica dominica). Forest simulations, based on expected harvest intensities and historic levels of natural disturbance, were used to update a stand inventory database at 10-yr intervals between 1993 and 2053. Habitat models for the 6 bird species were applied to the updated stand inventory and available habitat quantified for each decade. Late-successional species showed substantial increases in habitat availability over the 60-yr period at most harvest intensities, whereas habitat for early-successional species was stable or declined at most harvest intensities. Acadian flycatcher, yellow-throated warbler, and blue-headed vireo habitat increased by 200%, 213%, and 40%, respectively, whereas tufted titmouse habitat remained relatively constant at expected harvest levels. Chestnut-sided warbler habitat was stable at expected harvest levels but declined at lower harvest intensities, and yellow-billed cuckoo habitat declined by 37% at expected harvest levels. Natural disturbance had little effect on habitat availability for any bird species compared to the effects of timber harvests and increasing forest age. Our models suggest that anthropogenic disturbance, and lack thereof, can play a definitive role determining habitat availability and population viability for forest songbirds.  相似文献

Summary

Mature sperm of Prorhynchus sp. have an elongated nucleus, multiple mitochondria and dense bodies, and two free axonemes which are located in grooves of the main shaft for much of their length. The axonemes are subterminally inserted and have the typical 9+ ‘1’ arrangement unique to Platyhelminthes and synapomorphic for taxa of Trepaxonemata. The testis follicles examined had small numbers of developing spermatids and very few mature sperm were present. During spermiogenesis, spermatids remain joined in clusters by distinctive bridges. In each spermatid two centrioles (with an intercentriolar body between them) give rise to free axonemes which grow out in opposite directions from each other. Indistinct ciliary rootlets are present. The axonemes are carried distally from the main spermatid mass on an elongating process and turn back towards the main spermatid mass. Nucleus, mitochondria and dense bodies move into the shaft, and the spermatid elongates before detaching from others in the cluster. This is the first detailed study of sperm and spermiogenesis in Lecithoepitheliata. Mature sperm are distinctly different from those of prolecithophorans, to which they are reputedly related, the latter having aflagellate sperm without dense bodies.  相似文献
