The larvae of Anthene emolus (Lycaenidae) cannot survive in the wild without their associated ant Oecophylla smaragdina (Formicidae) . The ants groom the lycaenid larvae for secretions and, in turn, protect them from parasitoids and predators. Both major and minor worker ants tend larvae, although, in the present study, the frequencies of tending by different castes proved to be significantly different. Ants also tended late instars significantly more than young larvae. O. smaragdina ants of the same colony were observed fighting when A. emolus larvae were present. Aggression was exhibited by the major workers against the minor workers that tried to tend secreting larvae. Major ants precluded the minors from the most nutritious secretions, leaving minors to tend the less productive, early instars. On a few occasions, aggression was unchecked and major workers killed the larvae they were tending (presumably accidentally). When larvae were experimentally reared with only one caste of ant, the resulting butterflies showed no differences in dry weight. Several features of social dominance among Willow Tit Parus montanus winter flocks were examined during a four-winter study. Birds of both sexes were evenly distributed over the 33 flocks studied. In nearly half of the flocks there was an adult pair accompanied by yearlings, but one-third of the flocks consisted of more than two adults with yearlings. Males were found to be dominant over and larger than females. Within a sex, yearlings were usually subordinate to adults. The effect of size on dominance, after controlled for sex and age, remained obscure in our field data. The hierarchical status of an individual was found to rise or at least stay the same in different years, which supports the "hopeful dominants" hypothesis, i.e. birds stay in flocks hoping to achieve a higher status in the future. The ranks of mates correlated highly significantly, implying that high-ranking birds were paired with other high-ranking birds and low-ranking birds with other low-ranking birds. Birds of different age and sex did not show any differences in the proportion of initiated aggressive encounters directed at other individuals. However, males were more aggressive to other males than to females and also tended to behave less aggressively towards their own mates than towards other individuals in the flock. To study the relationships between groups of organisms and the degree to which these relationships are consistent across major climatic gradients, we analysed the testate amoeba ( Protozoa ) communities, vegetation and water chemistry of one peatland in five countries: Switzerland, The Netherlands, Great Britain, Sweden and Finland, as part of the BERI (Bog Ecosystem Research Initiative) project. The relationships between the different data sets and subsets were investigated by means of detrended correspondence analysis, canonical correspondence analysis and Mantel permutation tests. The comparison of data on vegetation and testate amoebae showed that inter-site differences are more pronounced for the vegetation than for the testate amoebae species assemblage. Testate amoebae are a useful tool in multi-site studies and in environmental monitoring of peatlands because: (1) the number of species in Sphagnum -dominated peatlands is much higher than for mosses or vascular plants; (2) most peatland species are cosmopolitan in their distributions and therefore less affected than plants by biogeographical distribution patterns, thus differences in testate amoeba assemblages can be interpreted primarily in terms of ecology; (3) they are closely related to the ecological characteristics of the exact spot where they live, therefore they can be used to analyse small-scale gradients that play a major role in the functioning of peatland ecosystems. This study revealed the existence of small-scale vertical gradients within the vegetation and life-form niche separation in response to water chemistry. The deep-rooted plants such as Carex spp. and Eriophorum spp. are related to the chemistry of water sampled at or near the ground water table, whereas the mosses are not. Testate amoebae were shown to be ecologically more closely related to the chemistry of water sampled at or near the water table level and to the mosses than to the deep-rooted plants.  相似文献

Species traits explain recent range shifts of Finnish butterflies   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This study provides a novel systematic comparative analysis of the species characteristics affecting the range margin shifts in butterflies towards higher latitudes, while taking phylogenetic relatedness among species into account. We related observed changes in the northern range margins of 48 butterfly species in Finland between two time periods (1992–1996 and 2000–2004) to 11 species traits. Species with positive records in at least ten 10 km × 10 km grid squares (in the Finnish National Butterfly Recording Scheme, NAFI) in both periods were included in the study. When corrected for range size change, the 48 butterfly species had shifted their range margins northwards on average by 59.9 km between the study periods, with maximum shifts of over 300 km for three species. This rate of range shifts exceeds all previously reported records worldwide. Our findings may be explained by two factors: the study region is situated in higher latitudes than in most previous studies and it focuses on the period of most prominent warming during the last 10–15 years. Several species traits exhibited a significant univariate relationship with the range margin shift according to generalized estimation equations (GEE) taking into account the phylogenetic relatedness among species. Nonthreatened butterflies had on average expanded their ranges strongly northwards (84.5 km), whereas the distributions of threatened species were stationary (−2.1 km). Hierarchical partitioning (HP) analysis indicated that mobile butterflies living in forest edges and using woody plants as their larval hosts exhibited largest range shifts towards the north. Thus, habitat availability and dispersal capacity of butterfly species are likely to determine whether they will be successful in shifting their ranges in response to the warming climate.  相似文献

Alan Rogers (1988) presented a game theory model of the evolution of social learning, yielding the paradoxical conclusion that social learning does not increase the fitness of a population. We expand on this model, allowing for imperfections in individual and social learning as well as incorporating a "critical social learning" strategy that tries to solve an adaptive problem first by social learning, and then by individual learning if socially acquired behavior proves unsatisfactory. This strategy always proves superior to pure social learning and typically has higher fitness than pure individual learning, providing a solution to Rogers's paradox of nonadaptive culture. Critical social learning is an evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS) unless cultural transmission is highly unfaithful, the environment is highly variable, or social learning is much more costly than individual learning. We compare the model to empirical data on social learning and on spatial variation in primate cultures and list three requirements for adaptive culture.  相似文献

The Siberian Tit Parus cinctus population of Finland, and probably of the whole of Fennoscandia, has declined dramatically during this century. Understanding its population dynamics is essential for its conservation. We studied annual survival rate and dispersal distance of both breeding and fledgling Siberian Tits during 1989-97 in a moderately managed forest habitat near the southern border of its range in Kuusamo, northeastern Finland. Breeding density was low, averaging 0.51 pairs/km in a nestbox area of about 42 km2. This was probably an underestimate, because we did not search for nests in natural holes. However, following its population decline, overall densities at the southern border of the range are low. The study area was, however, suitable breeding habitat as reflected by their high nesting success. Brood size at fledging averaged 7.45 young, and reproductive output was 6.16 young per breeding pair, including failed nests. Clutch size adjustment was successful among pairs producing fledglings because, on average, 92.6% of the eggs laid produced young in successful broods. Median distance between consecutive breeding attempts was 100 m for both males and females (range 0–2500 m and 0–6000 m, respectively). Natal dispersal distance was significantly longer in females than in males. We applied Cormack-Jolly-Seber modelling to estimate survival and recapture probabilities separately. Survival of breeding birds was not sex-related, averaging 0.69 annually. Some of the ringed fledglings (3.0%) were later captured as breeders in the area. This is an underestimate of local survival rate due to incomplete recapturing of breeding birds. The implications of these results with respect to the conservation status of the species are discussed.  相似文献

Adaptive phenotypic divergence of sympatric morphs in a single species may have significant evolutionary consequences. In the present study, phenotypic impacts of predator on zooplankton prey populations were compared in two northern Finnish lakes; one with an allopatric whitefish, Coregonus lavaretus (L.), population and the other with three sympatric whitefish populations. First, we examined whether there were phenotypic associations with specific niches in allopatric and sympatric whitefish. Second, trait utility (i.e. number of gillrakers) of allopatric and sympatric whitefish in utilizing a pelagic resource was explored by comparing predator avoidance of prey, prey size in environment, and prey size in predator diet. The allopatric living large sparsely rakered (LSR) whitefish morph, was a generalist using both pelagic and benthic niches. In contrast, sympatric living whitefish morphs were specialized: LSR whitefish was a littoral benthivore, small sparsely rakered whitefish was a profundal benthivore and densely rakered (DR) whitefish was a pelagic planktivore. In the lake with allopatric whitefish, zooplankton prey did not migrate vertically to avoid predation whereas, in the lake with sympatric whitefish, all important prey taxa migrated significantly. Butadiene monoepoxide (BMO) alkylated guanine N7 and adenine N 6 adducts were prepared and enriched by solid phase extraction and HPLC. The purified adducts were analysed by a modified 32P-postlabelling assay, which utilized one dimensional TLC chromatography and a subsequent HPLC analysis with UV and radioactivity detectors. In vitro with Ct-DNA the formation of N7-dGMP and N 6-dAMP adducts were linear at a concentration range of 44 to 870 nmol of BMO per mg DNA at physiological pH. N7- dGMP and N 6-dAMP adducts were formed in a ratio of 200:1. In dGMP and in dAMP 48 % and 86 % of adducts were covalently bound to the C-2 carbon of BMO. CD-1 mice were inhalation exposed to butadiene for 5 days and 6 h per day. The N7-dGMP adduct level in lung samples of animals exposed to 200, 500 and 1300 ppm was 2.8 +/- 0.9 fmol, 11 +/- 2.0 fmol and 30 +/- 6.7 fmol in 10 mug DNA, respectively. The level of N 6-dAMP adducts in lung samples after 500 ppm and 1300 ppm exposure was 0.09 +/- 0.06 fmol and 0.11 +/- 0.05 fmol in 10 mug DNA. At 200 ppm the adduct level was below the detection limit. A sub-group of animals exposed to 1300 ppm was killed 3 weeks after the last exposure. N7-dGMP adducts were not detected but the level of N 6-dAMP adducts was not affected. N7-dGMP adducts were formed in a clear stereospecific manner in vivo. S -BMO adducts were the main product and represented 77 % (n = 4, SD = 2%) of total BMO adducts. No clear conclusion can be drawn about the enantiospecific DNA binding at the N 6 position of dAMP, because of the poor separation of the enantiomers. However, we could separate regioisomeric adducts which indicated that C-2 adducts represented 69 +/- 3 % of the total N 6 adducts formed in mice lung DNA. This observation is supported by the data derived from in vitro DNA experiments but is different to our previously published data, which indicates the 2:1 (C-1:C-2) ratio in regioisomer formation in nucleotides or nucleosides. We suggest that the data presented in this communication indicate a different mechanism between nucleotides and DNA in BMO-derived adduct formation- Dimroth rearrangement dominates in nucleotides, but in double stranded DNA a direct alkylation is probably the major mechanism of adduct formation.  相似文献
