We present evidence for a dimorphic life cycle in the vacuolate sulfide-oxidizing bacteria that appears to involve the attachment of a spherical Thiomargarita-like cell to the exteriors of invertebrate integuments and other benthic substrates at methane seeps. The attached cell elongates to produce a stalk-like form before budding off spherical daughter cells resembling free-living Thiomargarita that are abundant in surrounding sulfidic seep sediments. The relationship between the attached parent cell and free-living daughter cell is reminiscent of the dimorphic life modes of the prosthecate Alphaproteobacteria, but on a grand scale, with individual elongate cells reaching nearly a millimeter in length. Abundant growth of attached Thiomargarita-like bacteria on the integuments of gastropods and other seep fauna provides not only a novel ecological niche for these giant bacteria, but also for animals that may benefit from epibiont colonization. 相似文献

Stimulation by naloxone, an opioid antagonist, of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) secretion was examined in spring-born crossbred ram lambs raised under natural photoperiod. Vehicle (n = 6) or 1 mg naloxone/kg vehicle (n = 6) was injected (i.m.) 3 times at 2-h intervals at 5, 10 and 15 weeks of age and 4 times at 2-h intervals at 20, 25, 30 and 35 weeks of age. Blood samples were taken every 12 min for 6 h at 5, 10 and 15 weeks of age and for 8 h at 20, 25, 30 and 35 weeks of age. Naloxone had no effect on age at sexual maturity (controls 239 +/- 23 days; naloxone 232 +/- 33 days). The only significant (P less than 0.05) effect of naloxone on FSH was a greater pulse amplitude in 10-week-old treated lambs than in control lambs. Naloxone treatment resulted in greater LH pulse amplitude at 5 and 10 weeks of age (P less than 0.05), lower basal serum concentration of LH at 10 weeks of age (P less than 0.05), greater LH pulse frequency at 25 weeks of age (P less than 0.05), and greater mean serum concentrations of LH, basal LH and LH pulse amplitude at 35 weeks of age (P less than 0.01) than in the controls. In both groups of lambs, mean and basal FSH, and LH and FSH pulse amplitude were highest at 5 weeks of age and fell with age. Gibberellins (GAs) A17, A19, A20, A29, A44, 2OH-GA44 (tentative) and GA29-catabolite were identified in 21-day-old seeds of Pisum sativum cv. Alaska (tall). These GAs are qualitatively similar to those in the dwarf cultivar Progress No. 9 with the exception of GA19 which does not accumulate in Progress seeds. There was no evidence for the presence of 3-hydroxylated GAs in 21 day-old Alaska seeds. Dark-grown shoots of the cultivar Alaska contein GA1, GA8, GA20, GA29, GA8-catabolite and GA29-catabolite. Dark-grown shoots of the cultivar Progress No.9 contain GA8, GA20, GA29 and GA29-catabolite, and the presence of GA1 was strongly indicated. Quantitation using GAs labelled with stable isotope showed the level of GA1 in dark-grown shoots of the two cultivars to be almost identical, whilst the levels of GA20, GA29 and GA29-catabolite were significantly lower in Alaska than in Progress No. 9. The levels of these GAs in dark-grown shoots were 102- to 103-fold less than the levels in developing seeds. Ovarian tissues were obtained from cyclic goats during the early, mid and late breeding season. Immunoreactive oxytocin was measured by RIA in tissue extracts after chromatography on octadecylsilica cartridges. Luteal oxytocin concentrations were significantly greater during the early breeding season than during the mid or late breeding season. Oxytocin is luteolytic in goats. High concentrations of luteal oxytocin may be related to the high incidence of short estrus at the onset of the breeding season. 相似文献
