A new method of sampling ascitic fluid from rats

A new method of sampling ascitic fluid from rats over a period of at least 8 h in a reliable and easy way is described. The objective was to determine drug concentrations in ascitic fluid after intraperitoneal chemotherapy. Two silicon tubes were implanted into the abdominal cavity, one for drug administration and regulation of pressure, the other enabled ascitic fluid to be withdrawn.     

The role of fish-poultry integration on fish growth performance,yields and economic benefits among smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa,Tanzania

Aquaculture practices from sub-Saharan Africa are characterised by low production, owing to improper technology. Production can be increased through integrating fish farming with other existing on-farm activities, particularly livestock husbandry. We assessed the role of fish-poultry integration on all male Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus growth performance, yields and economic benefits among smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa, Tanzania. The study also compared phytoplankton species composition, abundance and biomass between the fish-poultry integration and non-integrated system. After 180 days of the experiment, all male O. niloticus cultured under fish-poultry integration exhibited significantly higher growth rates than those in the non-integrated system (p < 0.05). Gross fish yield (GFY), net fish yield (NFY) and net annual yields (NAY) obtained from fish-poultry integration were significantly higher than those from non-integrated system (p < 0.05). Partial enterprise budget analysis revealed that fish-poultry integration was more profitable than the non-integrated system. Moreover, fish-poultry integrated system produced significantly higher phytoplankton abundance and biomass than those from the non-integrated system. Results demonstrate that rural smallholder farmers can achieve higher growth rate, farm net yields and income by integrating all male O. niloticus with other on-farm activities than practising a stand-alone fish culture system.     

The nature and titre of juvenile hormone in the Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata

This paper describes the nature and titre of juvenile hormone at different developmental stages of the Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say, determined by a selective mass-spectroscopic detection technique, High levels of juvenile hormone III were observed in long-day beetles, whereas low titres occurred in pre-diapause and diapause adults. The level of juvenile hormone III in larvae was low compared with reproductive adults, whereas hardly any juvenile hormone could be detected in pupae. We were not able to detect juvenile hormones I or II. The results agree well with previously reported data using the Galleria bioassay.     

The ecological integrity of the lower Olifants River,Limpopo province,South Africa: 2009–2015 – Part B: Tributaries of the Olifants River

Monitoring on the Lowveld reaches of the Olifants River, Limpopo River System, and its Steelpoort, Blyde, Klaserie and Selati tributaries was initiated in 2009. Analysis of the 2009–2015 data from four Olifants River sites showed deterioration in the river’s ecological condition between where it enters the Lowveld and where it enters the Kruger National Park, with a slight recovery within the Kruger National Park. Physico-chemical, aquatic macroinvertebrate and fish data collected in 2009–2015 at six sites on the Steelpoort, Blyde, Klaserie and Selati tributaries of the Olifants River corroborated the ecological condition of these tributaries. The Selati was the most polluted and was in a critically modified condition, whereas the Klaserie and Steelpoort were in fair condition and the Blyde was in good condition. The Selati appeared to have a significant negative impact on the water quality, macroinvertebrates and fish of the Olifants River within the Kruger National Park.
