The trophic role of rotifers in the zooplankton community of dimictic, oligotrophic lake Kozjak, the largest lake of the Plitvice Lakes, NW Dinarid Mountains, is analyzed. Their spatial and temporal biomass distribution in relation to that of protozoans, cladocerans and copepods shows that they form a significant part of the non-predatory zooplankton of this karstic standing water.  相似文献

The effects of aquatic macrophyte (willows and sawgrass) removal on flow velocity, tufa deposition, POM dynamics, and macroinvertebrate community structure were studied in the tufa barrier habitats of the barrage system of Plitvice Lakes, Croatia. Samples were collected from two hydraulic habitats (fast > 100 cm s−1 and slow < 100 cm s−1) at both a control (no macrophytes removed) and impact (macrophytes removed) site. Samples were collected with a core sampler (four layers in vertical profile of barrier bed) monthly on 6 dates before and 7 dates after the removal of macrophytes. Macrophytes were removed in May 2002 at the impact site. After the macrophyte removal flow velocity decreased significantly at both hydraulic habitats. Retarded flow resulted in: (a) a decrease in macroinvertebrate density and diversity since most of the taxa were rheophilic (preferring habitats with higher flow velocity) and (b) an increase in POM concentrations (FPOM and UPOM) since decreases in flow velocity facilitate particle deposition in lotic habitats. The effects of macrophyte removal were present, and diminish along the vertical sediment profile of the barrier bed. Tufa deposition was not influenced by the macrophyte removal. We investigated the distribution patterns of particulate organic matter (POM) on travertine barriers in respect to flow velocity. Research was conducted on the barrage-lake system of the Plitvice Lakes, Croatia. Four layers were distinguished within the substrate (moss mat + three travertine layers) in three hydraulic habitats at three sites. Substrate samples were collected monthly with a core sampler. The aim of the study was to explore the ability of moss mats and travertine substrate to accumulate POM; to ascertain the role of flow velocity and to produce a model of POM distribution pattern. The average of POM deposited in the 10 cm deep zone decreased significantly in the three sites along longitudinal profile of the system. Most POM was deposited in the moss mats, and the amounts decreased exponentially with depth. This was observed for coarse particulate organic matter (CPOM), ultra-fine particulate organic matter (UPOM) and total organic matter (TPOM) while fine organic matter (FPOM) deposition appeared unaffected by depth. More POM was accumulated in hydraulic habitats of low flow velocity. Correlation between flow velocity and POM accumulation was generally negative. Positive correlations between flow velocity and deposition rates were noted for CPOM in moss mats and top travertine layers; the deposition of other POM fractions was negatively influenced by the flow velocity. The influence of flow velocity decreased with increasing depth. In the deepest layers (7–10 cm) flow velocity influenced only the deposition of the smallest particles (UPOM).  相似文献

Considerable amount of riparian leaf litter is annually supplied to the cascade Plitvice Lakes and trapped on tufa barriers where it decays together with aquatic macrophytes. These barriers are the sites of heavy calcite precipitation that can widely differ in terms of current velocity. We conducted a leafbag experiment at sites differing in flow velocity and tufa deposition rate. Decomposition of Petasites spp. and Fagus sylvatica was higher under high current (0.80 m/s) and high tufa deposition areas than in low current (< 0.20 m/s) and low tufa deposition areas (k = 0.085 vs. 0.021 for Petasites spp. and 0.009 vs. 0.002 for Fagus sylvatica). We concluded that although tufa deposition could interfere with decomposition by obstructing physical abrasion and also restricting microbial conditioning, thin calcite crusts developed on the surface of the leaves made them more fragile and thus accelerated their decomposition. High current velocity probably magnified this effect by supporting higher tufa deposition and coarser type of tufa fabrics. (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

Research into spatial and temporal variation in seston transport was carried out during the year 2000 on three reaches on the longitudinal profile of the karstic cascading system of the Plitvice Lakes in Croatia. The three investigated reaches were (i) a channel over a barrier with low gradient; (ii) flow through a deep lake; and (iii) a channel with cascades and a steep gradient. The aim of the study was to establish the influence of physiographical and hydrological differences of these reaches on the quality and quantity of seston transport and food resources in the seston. To calculate the seston transport, we measured: total suspended matter (TSM), particulate inorganic matter (PIM), particulate organic matter (POM), chlorophyll-a (chl-a), heterotrophic bacteria and discharge. The PIM contribution from TSM ranged between 60 and 90%, while the percentage of POM in TSM was the highest in summer and ranged from 33 to 46%. POM and discharge were significantly negatively correlated (r = −0.43, P < 0.05). For the transport of TSM, PIM, POM and chlorophyll-a statistically significant differences between the three reaches were established. In a principal component analysis, 86% of the variance was explained by the first two factors. The first factor corresponded well with net transport of TSM, PIM, POM and chl-a and distinguished investigated reaches in two groups: the 1st group with increasing (reaches with low gradient and with high gradient), and the 2nd group with decreasing net seston transport (reach with flow through a deep lake). The second factor corresponded strongly with discharge and distinguished investigated reaches according to their temporal variability. In the longitudinal continuum of the Kupa River the vegetation cover and substrate type were the important environmental factors influencing the spatial differences in the biomass and community composition. Of total macroinvertebrate biomass, a significantly greater percentage of trichopterans was found on boulder and cobble substrata covered with moss (54.3% on boulders, 55.8% on cobbles) than on substrata covered with periphyton (9.9% on boulders, 14.8% on cobbles). In the potamal, trichopterans were markedly reduced (<2.5% of total macroinvertebrate biomass) on gravel substrata. A comparison of the Shannon diversity index values suggested that for trichopteran species diversity the substrate type was a more influential factor than vegetation cover. On the other hand, multidimensional scaling analysis showed that trichopteran community composition was related more significantly to vegetation cover and river area than to substrate type. In the rhithral the vegetation cover was an important factor influencing the functional feeding group composition of trichopterans. The spatial distribution of scrapers and filtering collectors depended significantly on the vegetation cover associated with substrate type, and shredder trichopterans were related to vegetation cover only. Predatory trichopterans made up 17–65% of total predator biomass, and in the rhithron area they were correlated significantly only with vegetation cover. On gravel substrata in the potamal, vegetation cover did not affect the spatial distribution of shredder and collector‐filterer trichopterans significantly.  相似文献

Aiming to establish the most frequent invertebrate taxa in drift at the small spatial scale within a moss-rich karst tufa-precipitating hydrosystem, we sampled drift among microhabitats differing in substratum type and flow conditions along a tufa barrier-cascading lotic reach. Additionally, we addressed the question of the contribution and the potential significance of meiofauna within the overall invertebrate drift at the small spatial scale. During the study period, a total of 60 invertebrate taxa were recorded in the drift. Six of these taxa belonged to the annelid/arthropod meiofauna and they represented 35% of total drift density. Macroinvertebrates found in drift were represented mainly by larval insects. The composition of the most abundant taxa in total drift was as follows: Alona spp. (Cladocera 26.7%), Riolus spp. (Coleoptera: Elmidae 13.2%), Simulium spp. (Diptera: Simuliidae 12.2%), Enchytraeidae (Oligochaeta 10.4%), Hydrachnidia (6.3%), Orthocladinae (Diptera: Chironomidae 3.9%) and Naididae (Oligochaeta 3.6%). Faunal drift densities and amounts of transported particulate matter (PM) were highest at the fast-flowing sites located at the barriers and lowest at the slow-flowing sites within pools. Similarly to the seasonal amounts of transported PM, faunal drift was lowest in winter, and peaked in autumn and in late spring/early summer. Correlation between flow velocity and PM-faunal drift densities suggested a significant effect of the dislodged PM, though a minor influence of discharge and flow velocity on faunal drift. We suggest that the small-scale habitat heterogeneity and the respective feeding and refugial strategies of the fauna, as well as faunal passive dislodgement initiated by the shear forces of the flow were the most important drivers of observed drift patterns.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine the combined effect of water transparency and narrow macrophyte belts on zooplankton assemblages in two oxbow lakes (Krapina River, Croatia). Samples were collected in open water and among helophytes in the littoral zone from April until September 2008. Rotifers were the most abundant group of zooplankton in both lakes, and dominated in the Krapina oxbow lake 1 (KO1). Lake KO1 had significantly lower transparency, lower percentage macrophyte cover and higher chlorophyll a concentration than Krapina oxbow lake 2 (KO2). In lake KO1, variation in the horizontal distribution of cladocerans and rotifers in terms of their abundance seemed to be determined by competition between Bosmina longirostris and Keratella cochlearis, initiated by oscillation in transparency and detritus availability. In lake KO2, with higher transparency and higher percentage macrophyte cover, the abundance of small‐ and large‐bodied cladocerans increased in the littoral zone simultaneously with higher transparency, suggesting fish predation. Results of this study indicated that small differences in transparencies between the two lakes caused significant differences in horizontal distribution of the zooplankton assemblage. Even narrow helophyte belts offered a refuge to zooplankton, although lower transparencies reduced the effectiveness of macrophytes as a refuge from predators. (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. A characteristic of aquatic systems in karstic region is the formation of tufa – the product of calcium carbonate precipitation. Artificial substrata (glass slides) were used to investigate the influence of tufa deposits at two different current velocities (5 cm s–1 and 50 cm s–1) on the ciliate assemblages in periphyton. After two-month exposure periods, periphyton biomass and tufa deposit were c. three times greater at 50 cm s–1 than at 5 cm s–1. Ciliate population density was also higher on artificial substrata exposed in a lotic than in a lentic microhabitat (the overall mean number of ciliates at 5 cm s–1 was 122 ind. cm–2, and at 50 cm s–1 497 ind. cm–2). At each of the two observed current velocities, a Principal Components (PCA) ordination of the colonized ciliate associations showed a spatial separation of the associations that developed under two different conditions of tufa deposition. During the period of greater tufa deposit, associated with greater periphyton overgrowth rate, the ciliate communities had higher species diversity (a higher number of species and a lower number of individuals). Species diversity of ciliates had a positive nonlinear relation to tufa deposition rate. These results suggest that artificial surfaces covered by a rough tufa layer associated with greater periphyton biomass offer diverse conditions for colonization by ciliates.  相似文献

A method is described for determining the relationship between primary production and respiration (P/R) in rapidly flowing waters. The Bliznec, Medveak and ernomerec Brooks near Zagreb-Jugoslavia, were taken as examples. The method evolved is based on the determination of oxygen at equally spaced time intervals during day and night (Table 1).Finally the formula % MathType!MTEF!2!1!+-% feaafiart1ev1aaatCvAUfeBSjuyZL2yd9gzLbvyNv2CaerbuLwBLn% hiov2DGi1BTfMBaeXatLxBI9gBaerbd9wDYLwzYbItLDharqqtubsr% 4rNCHbGeaGak0dh9WrFfpC0xh9vqqj-hEeeu0xXdbba9frFj0-OqFf% ea0dXdd9vqaq-JfrVkFHe9pgea0dXdar-Jb9hs0dXdbPYxe9vr0-vr% 0-vqpWqaaeaabaGaciaacaqabeaadaqaaqaaaOqaamaalaaabaGaai% ikaiaadseadaWgaaWcbaGaaGOmaaqabaGccqGHsislcaWGebWaaSba% aSqaaiaaigdaaeqaaOGaaiykaiabgUcaRiaacIcacaWGobWaaSbaaS% qaaiaaigdaaeqaaOGaeyOeI0IaamOtamaaBaaaleaacaaIYaaabeaa% kiaacMcacqGHRaWkcaGGOaGaeuiLdqKaamizaiabgkHiTiabfs5aej% aad6gacaGGPaaabaGaamOtamaaBaaaleaacaaIXaaabeaakiabgkHi% Tiaad6eadaWgaaWcbaGaaGOmaaqabaGccqGHsislcqqHuoarcaWGUb% aaaaaa!5366!\[\frac{{(D_2 - D_1 ) + (N_1 - N_2 ) + (\Delta d - \Delta n)}}{{N_1 - N_2 - \Delta n}}\]% MathType!MTEF!2!1!+-% feaafiart1ev1aaatCvAUfeBSjuyZL2yd9gzLbvyNv2CaerbuLwBLn% hiov2DGi1BTfMBaeXatLxBI9gBaerbd9wDYLwzYbItLDharqqtubsr% 4rNCHbGeaGak0dh9WrFfpC0xh9vqqj-hEeeu0xXdbba9frFj0-OqFf% ea0dXdd9vqaq-JfrVkFHe9pgea0dXdar-Jb9hs0dXdbPYxe9vr0-vr% 0-vqpWqaaeaabaGaciaacaqabeaadaqaaqaaaOqaaiaadcfacaGGVa% GaamOuaiabg2da9aaa!3AC3!\[P/R = \].is mentioned, where D1 denotes the average oxygen amount measured in the morning at the onset of the photosynthetic activity, D2 the average oxygen amount at the end of the photosynthetic activity, N1 the average oxygen deficiency at the beginning and at the end of dark period. For the purpose of checking, the values of saprobity determined after Zelinka & Marvan's method in a direct ecological way, in the same brook sections, are compared with the P/R values obtained (Table 2).Institute for Botany, University of Zagreb  相似文献
