Thirteen Weddell seals ( Leptonychotes weddellii ) were collected at Vestkapp, eastern Weddell Sea coast, in austral spring 1986. All stomachs contained partially digested food. The mean wet weight of stomach contents was 7.5 kg, 3.3% of the. mean body weight of the collected seals. Twelve fish species and three cephalopod species were identified from 372 left otoliths and 25 lower beaks, representing 58.4% of 679 total prey items obtained. Composition by number of total prey was: Chionodraco myersi (15.8%), Trematomus eulepidotus (10.0%), Pagetopsis maculatus (9.7%), Racovitzia glacialis (9.6%) and Cryodraco antarcticus (4.1%). Otoliths of the seven other fish species and beaks of the three cephalopod species together represented 9.1% of total prey numbers. The pooled wet weights calculated from 13 prey species (regressions for two octopod species were not available) amounted to 43.5 kg food mass and represented 44.7% of the combined food mass in all stomachs. Composition by mass was: C. myersi (44.5%), T. eulepidotus (19.8%), squid Psychroteuthis glacialis (8.5%), P. maculates (7.9%), C. antarcticus (7.1%) and R. glacialis (6.2%). The remaining 7 fish species together represented 5.8% by mass. Temporal variation in food availability was apparent. Midwater fish Pleuragramma antarcticum was the staple food of Weddell seals from the same area during the 1985 summer, whereas it was absent in the samples taken in spring 1986. Estimates of fish biomass from net hauls demonstrate a highly variable availability of pelagic food resources for top predators in the Vestkapp area.  相似文献

Distribution, growth and mortality of larval and juvenile rough scad Trachurus lathami Nichols, 1920, were studied, based on samples collected during December 1991 in the south-eastern Brazilian Bight. Young rough scad were widespread throughout the region surveyed, but spawning was more intensive in the northern area and tended to be greater in areas of low temperature and high salinity. The length class distribution of the rough scad larvae and juveniles ranged from 2.25 to 32.25 mm body length (BL), and the preflexion larvae of size categories from 2.25 to 3.25 mm BL were the most abundant. Net avoidance was detected for early larvae (2.25 mm length class) and for juveniles larger than 12.25 mm BL length class. Two models were applied to estimate growth and daily growth rate: a linear regression and a Gompertz curve. Both curves showed similar results and a good fit to the data. The mean growth rate estimated by linear regression was 0.44 mm per day (SD=0.008 mm). In small larvae up to 25 mm BL the linear and Gompertz curves showed similar estimated lengths. The hypothetical length at age zero ( L 0) was estimated as 1.5 mm. The instantaneous daily mortality coefficient estimated from the slope of the regression of log-transformed values of relative production rates ( P t/ d t) against age ( ti ) was Z=0.1888 for larval and juvenile rough scad. This corresponds to a daily mortality rate of 17.2%.  相似文献

Ingestion rates of zoeae of Aratus pisonii Milne Edwards (Brachyura: Grapsidae) were determined offering natural plankton-detritus mixtures in laboratory food selection experiments. The food mixtures were sampled in the Itamaracá estuary, north-eastern Brazil, and standardised to a size range of 50–200 μm. Zoeae ingested significant amounts of large centric diatoms (Coscinodiscus spp.), mangrove detritus, tintinnids (Favella ehrenbergi) and adult copepods during feeding experiments. Diatoms were positively selected by A. pisonii zoeae in all three experiments, with ingestion rates of 3.3–21.3 cells zoea−1 day−1. Detritus particles were always more abundant than phytoplankton and zooplankton in the particle size spectrum offered. Detritus was ingested in two of three experiments, with ingestion rates of up to 34.1 particles zoea−1 day−1, being the most important food item during one experiment. Adult copepods (up to 1.8 ind. zoea−1 day−1) and tintinnids (up to 0.4 ind. zoea−1 day−1) were ingested by A. pisonii zoeae during one experiment each. In spite of a wide range of zoeal density, food particle composition, and density, zoeae of A. pisonii displayed a consistent pattern of food selectivity. This hints at a consistent sensory and behavioural mechanism related to capture and handling of food particles, that most likely also affects larval feeding under natural conditions. Although detritus showed to be quantitatively ingested under estuarine conditions, zoeae of A. pisonii preferred large diatoms and ingested zooplankton only occasionally.  相似文献

The African halfbeak Hyporhamphus picarti (Hemiramphidae) is one of the most abundant species within the ichthyoplankton community of the Sine Saloum estuary (Senegal). A year‐round occurrence of larvae suggests that the Sine Saloum is an important spawning habitat for this species. Annual fluctuations in water temperature, however, can have severe impacts on the survival probabilities of marine fish larvae. To determine whether temperature has an effect on the growth of H. picarti during its larval development, larval age at length and somatic growth rates were investigated for two contrasting spawning seasons in 2014: February (cold season, 20.8°C) and June (warm season, 26.4°C). In both months H. picarti larvae were sampled at the mouth of the Saloum River using neuston nets. Sagittal otoliths’ increments were counted to estimate the larva age at a given standard length (SL). The age of larvae ranged between 2 and 22 days, with SL of 3.86–21.68 mm, respectively. In order to describe larval age at length during the contrasting spawning seasons, two distinctive Gompertz functions were applied. Accordingly, specimens sampled in June (0.94 ± 0.17 mm per day) exhibited significantly higher somatic growth rates than those sampled in February (0.60 ± 0.06 mm per day). These findings suggest that water temperature is an important factor influencing larval growth in H. picarti. Information concerning the early life stages of H. picarti are scarce and the results of the present study may contribute to a better understanding of the species’ biology and ecology.  相似文献

A one-to-one relationship was found between days of rearing and counted daily increments in the otoliths of Sarotherodon melanotheron verifying daily increment deposition. A marked hatch check was found in all otoliths from both the reared fish and the wild specimens. Five to 10 faint prolarval increments were visible but the rate of their formation was not investigated. The rate of increment deposition of S. melanotheron is apparently independent of somatic growth and increments found in the otoliths of this species can therefore be used for ageing.  相似文献

The Antarctic fish family Nototheniidae (Perciformes) presumably originated from a benthic ancestor, and several lineages have evolved to live or at least feed in the water column, a trend called pelagization. Here, we use information on phylogeny, allometric growth, and diet composition for an integrated analysis of morphological and ecological diversification in this group, mainly focusing on the subfamilies Trematominae and Pleuragramminae. A phylogenetic analysis of data published in earlier systematic studies produced eight equally parsimonious trees, all indicating that several previously recognized taxa are paraphyletic. These phylogenetic trees all suggest multiple origins of pelagic life styles. Multivariate morphometric analyses including nine species showed that juveniles and adults grow according to a common pattern of ontogenetic allometry. The morphometric differences among species are mosdy the result of lateral transpositions of the growth trajectories, indicating that embryonic and larval development is more important as a determinant of morphological variation than allometric growth as juveniles and adults. We studied patterns of interspecific variation with principal components and the covariation between morphometric variables and food composition with a partial least-squares analysis. Both analyses revealed a gradient from benthic to pelagic foragers. Measurements of structures involved in swimming have a prominent role in these analyses, suggesting adaptive evolution of these traits. Tracing morphometric traits on the phylogenetic trees revealed a considerable amount of evolutionary plasticity, showing that species related phylogenetically need not be morphologically similar, but can diverge considerably, perhaps as a response to natural selection and adaptation to different habitats and foraging modes. In accordance, a test of phylogenetically independent contrasts showed that bursts of increased morphological change accompanied habitat shifts.  相似文献

The gross energy content of spawning batches and the microchemistry of sagittal otoliths in individual female bonga shad Ethmalosa fimbriata were compared between contrasting sampling sites at the Senegalese southern coast and inside the hypersaline Sine Saloum Estuary. Results show that females spawning in the estuary's middle reaches invested almost three times more energy into reproduction (115 ± 65 J g−1 body mass) than their neritic counterparts (39 ± 34 J g−1 body mass). Also, female otolith levels of Ba:Ca, Sr:Ca and Zn:Ca either differed significantly between study sites or could be linked to heterogeneous environmental variables. A quadratic discriminant function analysis provided evidence of segregated spawning populations of E. fimbriata in southern Senegalese waters.  相似文献

The mangrove forest along the northern Brazilian coast is not inundated during low tide. However, many fish species stay in the mangrove forest during this time. Tidal behaviour strategies are described for fish species that linger in the mangrove forest during low tide. The samples were taken at the end of the dry season (December 1996) and at the end of the rainy season (July 1997). Fish were captured using an ichthyotoxic plant extract (Ichthyotere cunabi). Spatial and temporal fish density and biomass were analyzed statistically. Thirty-six samples were taken with a total density of 2.8 ind m-2 and a total biomass of 17.4 g m-2 distributed among seven families and 14 species. Myrophis punctatus was the most important species in number (1.66 ind m-2) and weight (12.68 g m-2) of all catches. The total fish densities were not significantly different among areas and between months, although, total biomass differed significantly in time and space. The densities and biomass for the three most dominant species (M. punctatus, Poecilia spp. and Gobionellus smaragdus) differed significantly among species. Only the biomass of these species showed significant monthly differences. The only significant main effect on variance in the densities and biomass of M. punctatus were encountered between months. In addition, the factor area was significantly different for the variable number of species.  相似文献

We examined growth rates and reproductive characteristics of Sardinella aurita off Senegal and other coastal areas over a 20 year period (1995–2014) to determine how they relate to variations in environmental characteristics of coastal waters. Based on fish length-frequency data and a coastal upwelling index, we found that S. aurita recruitment tends to occur during the periods of most intensive upwelling (March–April off Senegal). Peak reproduction corresponds to periods of low sea-surface temperature (in February or March). The sex ratio was remarkably consistent during the 30 year study period and so was not affected by environmental changes. We hypothesise that S. aurita takes advantage of the higher zooplankton productivity that occurs in coastal waters when upwelling brings nutrient-rich water to the surface (i.e., it increases its growth rate and accumulates energy reserves for spawning). Growth performance appears to be strongly dependent on environmental conditions. The timing of spawning seems to occur when food (zooplankton) is most available for supplying the energy requirements needed by adults for spawning and early development of larvae. Environmental changes seem to have a significant effect on S. aurita growth and reproduction, which endorses their high phenotypic plasticity.  相似文献

Summary Routine oyxgen consumption ( ) of the artedidraconid fish Pogonophryne scotti at-1°C is determined using a flow-through respirometer. The metabolic rate during an 8 to 12 h acclimation period is found to exceed the actual routine metabolic level by a factor of 2 to 4. of 7 P. scotti varies between 2.5 mg/h and 4.4 mg/h for fish weighing 58 g to 210 g. The exponent of the oxygen consumption/weight equation is 0.46. From this relation, routine of a 100 g fish is calculated as 2.9 mg/h. The significance of acclimation times and the use of standardized methods for future respiration measurements of Antarctic fish are discussed. To whom correspondence should be addressed  相似文献
