Attraction ofCarpoglyphus lactis (Acarina: Acaridae) to selected organic compounds

Various chemicals commonly found in food (twelve monosaccharides, nine sugar alcohols, twenty triglycerides, eleven unsaturated fatty acids and nine saturated fatty acids) were tested in different concentrations for their ability to attract and sustain feeding by the dried-fruit mite,Carpoglyphus lactis (L.). Oleic acid, -d-glucose and some triglycerides act as phagoincitants and phagostimulants, whiled-fucose and trilaurin are phagodeterrents.     

Wheat germ agglutinin binding sites on human urothelial cells of different grades of transformation

¹²⁵I-Wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) binding parameters of human urothelial cell lines of different grades of transformation (TGrll and TGrlll) were compared. The values of association constant (K_a) and the number of binding sites/cell for HCV29 (TGrll) cell line were about 3×10⁶M^–1 and over 4×10⁷, respectively. Two TGrlll cell lines, HCV29T and Hu549 revealed lower values for K_a, and considerably higher numbers of binding sites/cell (about 3×10⁸ and 2×10⁸, respectively). Binding of¹²⁵I-WGA to total cellular proteins resolved by SDS-PAGE and transferred to nitrocellulose showed multiple diffused bands in the range of 58–180 kDa. Hafnia alvei lipopolysaccharides: Isolation, sugar composition and SDS-PAGE analysis

Abstract Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) of 33 strains of Hafnia alvei were isolated and purified. LPS content of the dry bacterial mass ranged from 1.2 to 4.5%. All examined lipopolysaccharides contained glucose, glucosamine, heptose, 3-deoxy-octulosonic acid and often galactose. Rhamnose, mannose, galactosamine, mannosamine and unidentified amino sugars were found in some H. alvei strains. Sialic acid was present in LPS of one strain. d -3-Hydroxybutyryl groups also were identified in lipopolysaccharides of 5 strains of this genus.
SDS-PAGE of the lipopolysaccharides was presented in the paper. According to these results two core types exist in H. alvei .     

Structures of the α(1-3)-galactose-containing asparagine-linked glycans of a Lewis lung carcinoma cell subline resistant toAleuria aurantia agglutinin: elucidation by1H-NMR spectroscopy

Four bi-antennary glycan fractions of theN-acetyllactosamine-type, derived from a Lewis lung carcinoma (LL₂) cell subline resistant to theAleuria aurantia agglutinin were studied by 400 MHz¹H-NMR spectroscopy. By this method, their antennae were found to be terminated either by (2-3 or 6)-linkedN-acetylneuraminic acid or (1-3)-linked galactose residues. Cloning and identification of bacteriophage T4 gene 2 product gp2 and action of gp2 on infecting DNA in vivo.

We sequenced bacteriophage T4 genes 2 and 3 and the putative C-terminal portion of gene 50. They were found to have appropriate open reading frames directed counterclockwise on the T4 map. Mutations in genes 2 and 64 were shown to be in the same open reading frame, which we now call gene 2. This gene codes for a protein of 27,068 daltons. The open reading frame corresponding to gene 3 codes for a protein of 20,634 daltons. Appropriate bands on polyacrylamide gels were identified at 30 and 20 kilodaltons, respectively. We found that the product of the cloned gene 2 can protect T4 DNA double-stranded ends from exonuclease V action.     

Structural and immunochemical studies on the lipopolysaccharide of the ‘T-antigen’-containing mutant Proteus mirabilis R14/1959

Abstract In DOC-PAGE, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of Proteus mirabilis R14/1959 (Rb-type) mutant showed a ladder-like migration pattern indicating the presence of a high molecular weight polysaccharide chain. The isolated polysaccharide, called T-antigen because of similarity with the T1 chain of Salmonella friedenau LPS, contained d -glucose, d -galacturonic acid ( d -GalA), and d -GlcNAc in molar ratios 2:1:1 and was structurally different from the O-antigen of the parental S-strain P. mirabilis S1959 but identical to the O-antigen of another S-strain Proteus penneri 42. The importance of a d -GalA( l -Lys)-containing epitope, most likely present in the core region of LPS, and of GalA present in the T-antigen chain in manifesting the serological specificity of P. mirabilis R14/1959 were revealed using rabbit polyclonal homologous and heterologous R- and O-specific antisera and the appropriate antigens, including synthetic antigens which represent partial structures of various Proteus LPS.     

The in vitro effect of new muramyl peptide derivatives on cytotoxic activity of NK (Natural Killer) cells from hamsters bearing AB Bomirski Melanoma

The modulation of NK activity by muramyl dipeptides derivatives against Ab (amelanotic) Bomirski melanoma and human erythroleukemia K562 cells was studied in vitro. The stimulatory effect was observed for 3 of 7 muramyl dipeptides: MDP(L-Ala)C921, MDPC857 and L18-MDP(Ala) in relation to cytotoxic activity of NK cells obtained from peripheral blood and spleen of healthy and Ab Bomirski melanoma bearing hamsters. An increased of cytotoxic activity NK cells isolated from animals before and during the transplantable phase of the tumor against K562 was found. A similar stimulation was received for NK cells obtained from animals against their own melanoma cells. The most significant influence of examined MDP derivatives on the cytotoxic activity of NK cells were obtained from animals between 10 to 12 days of tumor growth. The extent of the modulation of cytotoxic activity of NK cells was dependent on its initial value both in healthy control and Ab Bomirski melanoma bearing hamsters. If natural cytotoxic activity was high the stimulatory effect of the examined MDP derivatives was only slightly expressed.     

Purification and characterization of cytoplasmic 14C-arginine rich basic proteins of Ehrlich ascites tumor cells

Summary Arginine rich basic proteins from cytoplasm of Ehrlich ascites tumor cells have been separated and partially characterized. All proteins show a cationic character with the following isoelectric points: 8.45, 8.60, 8.70, 8.90, and possess various amount of arginine. The protein of the highest molecular weight (75000) has the greatest amount of arginine (18.1%), specific radioactivity (19760 cpm/mg, min) and isoelectric point (8.9). The significance of those proteins in the cytoplasm of tumor cells has been discussed briefly.
