Molecular Characterization of a Barley Gene Induced by Cold Treatment

A cDNA library was made from low positive temperature (6 ?C/2?C) grown barley shoot meristems. Several genes which are differentiallyexpressed, as measured by mRNA abundance, were selected fromthe library using a differential screen. This paper reportsan analysis of in vivo expression in several cultivars, theDNA sequence, copy number and chromosomal location of one gene(BLT14). In addition, genomic restriction fragment length polymorphismfor this gene in the 10 most widely UK-grown spring and 9 mostwidely UK-grown winter barley cultivars is analysed. CONSIDERATIONS OF THE IDIOGNATHOIDES - DECLINOGNATHODUS - NEOGNATHODUS COMPLEX OF MIDDLE CARBONIFEROUS PLATFORM CONODONTS

An earlier proposed hypothesis by Straka & Lane (1970), suggesting 'Idiognathoides' noduliferus and Idiognathoides sulcatus as the progenitors of a closely related group of Lower Pennsylvanian (Morrowan) conodonts, is here considered as unnecessarily complex and based on insufficient data. An alternative and more simple interpretation is offered based on phylogenetic, ontogenetic, and stratigraphic considerations. It is suggested that the Idiognathoides sulcata (and/or I. opimus)-Idiognathoides sinuatus (and/or I. opimus ) group descended from Gnathodus defectus , and that Neognathodus bassleri was descended from Declinognathodus. Declinognathodus noduliferus and Gnathodus defectus are considered as having shared the common ancestor, Gnathodus girtyi simplex.     

Studies on the aphid, Cavariella aegopodii Scop: On secondary hosts other than carrot

Of the eleven cultivated species of Umbelliferae heavily attacked in the field by Cavariella aegopodii Scop., chervil (Anthriscus cerefolium) attracted so many alates that it was killed before a population of alienicolae developed. Carrot was next in order of alate preference and coriander (Coriandrum sativum) and caraway (Carum carvi) were last. Despite its lack of attraction, caraway proved more lastingly suitable as a host and eventually supported the largest population of alienicolae. Of the wild umbellifers tested, wild carrot, Daucus carota ssp. carota, was the species most preferred by the incoming alates and hemlock (Conium maculatum) the least. On hemlock, also, there was little colonization. Although a sequence of wild umbellifers supported C. aegopodii through most of the year, few were suitable winter hosts; the apterae hibernated largely on carrot crops. In spring, cow parsley (Anthriscus sylvestris) was one of the hosts first colonized by immigrant C. aegopodii and carried winged alienicolae before the end of June. The main development of winged alienicolae on Anthriscus and other wild Umbelliferae, however, was in July. The possible role of the wild umbelliferous hosts of C. aegopodii in the spread of motley dwarf virus to carrots is discussed.     

Scrape cytology in the diagnosis of Paget's disease of the breast

Eczema of the nipple is an important symptom presenting to the general surgeon in the out-patient department. the diagnosis of Paget's disease of the nipple has traditionally been made by incision biopsy necessitating at least a local anaesthetic. We present 14 patients with nipple skin change, in whom the technique of scrape cytology was used to identify patients with Paget's disease. In our series eight cases of Paget's disease were successfully identified by scrape cytology with no false negatives or positives. We suggest that this is a quick, easy, non-invasive method of screening eczema of the nipple in the out-patient clinic.
