Five species of sea skaters, genus Halobates Eschscholtz, are the only insects to have successfully colonized the open ocean. In addition, 36 species are found in sheltered coastal waters throughout tropical Indo-Pacific. The taxonomy of the genus is relatively well known, but reliable hypotheses about phylogenetic relationships are required if the biogeography and evolution of sea skaters is to be discussed in a meaningful way. This work presents the results of a study of new characters from the genital segments, especially those of the male phallus and the female gynatrial complex, and a reinterpretation for several other characters. In total 64 characters were scored for 26 species of Halobates , two species ofAsclepios and one species of Metrocoris. With Asclepios and Metrocoris species as outgroups, the character state sets were analysed cladistically using the computer program Hennig86. After critical evaluations of both characters and clades, a phylogeny for Halobates is presented and its taxonomic implications are discussed. A number of monophyletic species groups are delimited. One genus-level synonymy and three species-level synonymies are suggested. The evolution of Halobates is discussed in the light of the reconstructed phylogeny and present knowledge of the ecology and behaviour of sea skaters. A hypothesis of ecological evolution in halobatine water striders is proposed and tested.  相似文献

Ants often appear to be important post-dispersal seed predators, particularly in Australia where they are exceptionally abundant and apparently can remove large quantities of seeds from the ground. Rates of seed removal by ants usually are measured by recording removal from artificial seed baits, but the reliability of this approach has not been tested, nor have there been many attempts to integrate the results with the activity of seed-eating ants. This paper describes the rates of seed removal, estimated using a baiting technique that is tested for its reliability, by the seed-eating ants in adjacent heath and woodland sites at Wilson's Promontory, Victoria. Ants removed up to 100% of seeds, but rates varied according to seed species, size of seed clumps, season, time of exposure, and other aspects of the baiting technique. Methodological guidelines are provided to make baiting conditions approximately those likely to occur in nature. Seed-eating ants, particularly species of Rhytidoponera, Chelaner and Pheidole, were by far the most important post-dispersal seed predators, and patterns of seed removal were directly related to their composition, abundance and foraging behaviour. Lygaeid bugs were also observed eating seeds, but there was no evidence of seed predation by rodents or birds. The results suggest that seed predation by ants can substantially deplete seed reserves: however, its actual effect on seedling recruitment is likely to depend on many factors including seed size, crop size, weather, timing and location of seed fall, availability of alternative food sources, patterns of seedling mortality, and fire, none of which have been adequately investigated.  相似文献

We characterized 59 canine single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the endangered Italian wolf (Canis lupus) population, which were discovered by resequencing sequence‐tagged‐site (STS) DNA sequences that are known to contain SNPs in domestic dogs. Dog SNPs were usually found also in wolves. Additional SNPs unique in dogs or wolves were discovered, which is important for detecting hybrids between dogs and wolves. We developed new primer sets and analysed 15 SNPs by Pyrosequencing. The characterized SNPs will provide an important addition to the genetic markers that are currently available for studying wild populations of canids.  相似文献

The immediate effects of a high intensity wildfire on the ant communities of a heath and a mallee site in semi-arid north-western Victoria are reported. Following fire the number of species trapped on the ground doubled (to ca. 80 each site), total ant abundance decreased by half (due to the demise of previously dominant species), surface activity of reproductive castes increased, and dramatic changes in species relative abundance (including shifts toward greater equitability) occurred. These changes are interpreted in terms of fire-induced simplification of the habitat and release from competition with dominant species. The results appear to illustrate the importance of interspecific competition in structuring foraging activity in mallee ant communities. Observations are also reported on seed-harvesting by ants, including changes in harvester ant abundance, germination from within-nest seed storage, and the first record of Heteroponera removing seeds.  相似文献

It is crucial to examine the genetic diversity and structure of small, isolated populations, especially those at the edge of their distribution range, because they are vulnerable to stochastic processes if genetic diversity is low and the isolation level is high, and because such populations provide insight into the consequences of population declines in a broader conservation context. The harbour seal (Phoca vitulina) population in Svalbard is the world's northernmost P. vitulina population. Nothing is known about the genetic diversity, distinctiveness, or origin of this small, marginalized mammalian population. Thus, the present study investigated its genetic status in the context of nearby P. vitulina in Iceland, south‐east Greenland, and northern Norway: this species is depleted/threatened in all of these regions. A total of 174 samples distributed between the four locations were analysed using 15 polymorphic microsatellites and variation in the displacement loop region (D‐loop). Each of the four locations was a genetically distinct population. The Svalbard population was highly genetically distinct, had reduced genetic diversity, received limited gene flow, had a rather low effective population size, and showed an indication of having experienced a bottleneck resulting from a recent population decline. The significant heterozygote excess observed in the Svalbard sample might be attributed to the low effective population size, which could initiate future population inbreeding effects. This phenomenon has not been reported earlier from other P. vitulina populations, but if the Svalbard population is experiencing inbreeding, this could reduce its resilience to climate change, disease outbreaks, or other perturbations. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 102 , 420–439.  相似文献
