The role of wild birds in the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 has been greatly debated and remains an unresolved question. However, analyses to determine involvement of wild birds have been hindered by the lack of basic information on their movements in central Asia. Thus, we initiated a programme to document migrations of waterfowl in Asian flyways to inform hypotheses of H5N1 transmission. As part of this work, we studied migration of waterfowl from Qinghai Lake, China, site of the 2005 H5N1 outbreak in wild birds. We examined the null hypothesis that no direct migratory connection existed between Qinghai Lake and H5N1 outbreak areas in central Mongolia, as suggested by some H5N1 phylogeny studies. We captured individuals in 2007 from two of the species that died in the Qinghai Lake outbreaks and marked them with GPS satellite transmitters: Bar-headed Geese Anser indicus ( n  =   14) and Ruddy Shelduck Tadorna ferruginea ( n  =   11). Three of 25 marked birds (one Goose and two Shelducks) migrated to breeding grounds near H5N1 outbreak areas in Mongolia. Our results describe a previously unknown migratory link between the two regions and offer new critical information on migratory movements in the region.  相似文献

The experimental host range of Odontoglossum ringspot virus (ORSV), a member of the tobamoviruses, includes several species of Nicotiana , but not N. sylvestris . However, ORSV was able to replicate in protoplasts from N. sylvestris leaves. By using the green fluorescent protein (GFP) as a marker inserted into ORSV, it was found that a small number of single epidermal cells became infected in mechanically inoculated leaves, but the virus did not move cell to cell. The ORSV movement protein (MP) and coat protein (CP) were examined for their ability to effect movement by substitution into Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) hybrids. Both proteins and the 3' non-translated region (NTR) of ORSV allowed movement of TMV hybrids in N. sylvestris . These results suggested that the inability of ORSV to move in N. sylvestris was due to the replicase gene or the 5'NTR. One possibility was that the replicase gene could indirectly affect movement by failing to produce subgenomic (sg) RNAs for expression of MP or CP, but this appeared not to be the case as ORSV replicated and produced MP and CP sgRNAs, both of which were translated in N. sylvestris protoplasts. Additionally, genomic RNA was encapsidated into virions in N. sylvestris protoplasts. Because the 5'NTR permitted efficient replication and production of replicase proteins, these findings suggest that the replicase of ORSV is responsible for the defect in cell-to-cell movement of ORSV in N. sylvestris .  相似文献

Many of nature's most striking animal colours are iridescent, exhibiting a high degree of spectral purity and strong angular dependence of intensity and hue. Although a growing number of studies have detailed the intricate mechanisms responsible for producing iridescent colours, few attempts have been made to describe their dynamic appearance in ecologically and behaviourally realistic contexts. We suggest that the optical properties unique to iridescent structural colours are important for understanding how they function as signals during behavioural interactions. Using males of the orange sulphur butterfly, Colias eurytheme , which exhibit an iridescent ultraviolet (UV) reflectance on their dorsal wing surfaces, we develop a holistic framework for inferring the appearance of this signal to conspecifics under field conditions that incorporate data on their spectral sensitivity. We show that, during flight, the UV signal is brightest within a wing beat cycle when viewed from directly above the male. Spectral properties of the signal under natural lighting indicate that male wing colour should be readily perceived and distinguished from that of females and from the dark green visual background of UV-absorbing vegetation. Finally, our analyses permit predictions regarding how signal senders and receivers should orientate themselves for maximal transmission and reception of this ultraviolet iridescent signal.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 90 , 349–364.  相似文献
