We compiled a 5.8S nuclear ribosomal gene sequence database for animals, plants, and fungi using both newly generated and GenBank sequences. We demonstrate the utility of this database as an internal check to determine whether the target organism and not a contaminant has been sequenced, as a diagnostic tool for ecologists and evolutionary biologists to determine the placement of asexual fungi within larger taxonomic groups, and as a tool to help identify fungi that form ectomycorrhizae.  相似文献

Abstract

Comparative studies of sound production and sound emission in seven species of European tettigoniids have been carried out. The species chosen were two Tettigoniines (Tettigonia cantans, Tettigonia viridissima), two Ephippigerines (Ephippiger discoidalis, Ephippiger ephippiger), and three Decticines (Decticus albifrons, Decticus verrucivorus, Psorodonotus illyricus). The factors which determined the choice of species were the different morphology (for example body shape and weight, and wing size) of the three subfamilies. The parameters of the different songs (e.g. dominant frequency, intensity) are normally not correlated to any of the investigated morphological characteristics of the animals. In the brachypterous species intraspecific correlations exist between wing size and the dominant low frequency band of the call. This frequency band is also observable at related higher frequencies in the ultrasonic range (20–60 kHz), the observed band width increasing with frequency. Sound emission in all species is to some extent directional. This directionality is related to body size and wing structure. The song structure of the different species does not appear to be related to any observable characteristic of the habitat of die animals. A possible exception may be the song of Psorodonotus illyricus with a particularly low dominant frequency band. The phylogenetic development of the songs seems to be determined by relationships between the different species rather than to any factors contributed by the habitat.  相似文献

The primary sculpture of the seed surface in the genus Frailea (Cactaceae) is characterized by a i flat outer periclinal wall and the presence of an usually eccentric papilla. Papilla morphology differs mainly in size and breadth:length ratio. Seeds of different species (groups) are characterized by special patterns in the arrangement of short and long papillae on the surface, thus providing a useful tool for taxonomic studies in Frailea. The seeds of Frailea castanea possess branched papillae, a character restricted in this genus to this species. Moreover, such papilla morphology seems to be unique for the seed epidermis in spermatophytes. The possible function of the papillae is discussed.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of the cortex of Homalozoon vermiculare is described. The ventral side bears 13–15 iongitudinal kineties composed of monokinetids. On the dorsal surface, there are 3 kineties, 2 of which are composed of dikinetids in the anteriormost part of the cell. Consequently there exist 3 different kinds of kinetids within the somatic cortex: 1) The monokinetids on the ventral side are associated with a kinctodesmal fibril, 2 transverse microtubular ribbons and 7 postciliary microtubules in a double-row configuration; 2) The monokinetids on the dorsal side are very similar but they are associated with just 3 very 'short postciliary microtubules; 3) The posterior kinetosome of the dorsal dikinetids bears the same fibrillar associates as the dorsal monokinetid, but it lacks the second transverse ribbon. The anterior kinetosome of each pair is associated with a single postciliary' microtubule. The kinetid organization of Homalozoon is compared to that of other members of the Haptorida. Their phylogeny is discussed. A monophyleiic taxon within the litostomate ciliates is characterized by data on the somatic kinetids, and the new subclass Ditransversalia n. subcl. is constituted. The new subclass comprises the genera Balantidium, Bryophyllum, Enchelydium, Homalozoon, Isotricha, Lacrymaria, Lepidolrachelophyllum, Spathidium and Vestibulongum .  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Sound production in seven species of bush crickets (Tettigonia cantans, T. virridissima, Decticus verrucivorus, D. albifrons, Psorodonotus illyricus, Ephippiger ephippiger, E. discoidalis) has been investigated. Aspects of wing morphology have been compared and show that areas of the dorsal fields and the mirror are correlated with the dominant frequencies of the songs. Tooth removal from the pars stridens produces gaps in the time structure of single syllables but no change in the song power spectra. The removal of the tegminal lateral field in long- and medium-sized wing species (T.c., T.v., D.a., D.v.) produces an increase in the ultrasonic components of caudally-emitted sound. This suggests an absorbing function for the lateral fields in intact animals. In all species removal of a small portion of the mirror frame or of the mirror membrane attenuates the whole stridulatory signal, but especially the ultrasonic components. The mirror therefore functions as an amplifier, especially for high frequencies. Manipulation of the dorsal fields of long- and medium-winged species, or the distal edges of tegmina of brachypterous species, deletes or shifts the songs' dominant frequency. Thus the different tegminal structures (and especially the dorsal fields) contribute to the time structures and power spectra of the stridulatory songs of these species.  相似文献

The Hexanchiformes (Cow Sharks) are regarded as a monophyletic taxon. Cladistic analysis shows that among the various neoselachian taxa proposed so far as the sister group of the Hexanchiformes a sister group relationship between the Hexanchiformes and a (still unnamed) taxon comprising the Squaliformes and Pristiophoriformes appears as the most probable hypothesis. In addition, MAISEY and WOLFRAM'S (1984) concept of hexanchiform interrelationships is critically reviewed. An alternative cladogram of hexanchiform interrelationships is developed which includes Recent as well as fossil hexanchiform taxa. In this cladogram the living genera Hexancbus and Notorynchus are sister groups and both taxa together form the sister group of the Recent Heptranchias. The fossil taxa +Notidanoides, +“Hexanchus” gracilis, +Notidanodon and +Weltonia are arranged in the stem lineage of recent Hexanchiformes.  相似文献

We compared the assemblages of phyllostomid bats in three Neotropical rainforests with respect to species richness and assemblage structure and suggested a method to validate estimates of species richness for Neotropical bat assemblages based on mist-netting data. The fully inventoried bat assemblage at La Selva Biological Station (LS, 100 m elevation) in Costa Rica was used as a reference site to evaluate seven estimators of species richness. The Jackknife 2 method agreed best with the known bat species richness and thus was used to extrapolate species richness for an Amazonian bat assemblage (Tiputini Biodiversity Station; TBS, 200 m elevation) and an Andean premontane bat assemblage (Podocarpus National Park; BOM, 1000 m elevation) in Ecuador. Our results suggest that more than 100 bat species occur sympatrically at TBS and about 50 bat species coexist at BOM. TBS harbours one of the most species-rich bat assemblages known, including a highly diverse phyllostomid assemblage. Furthermore, we related assemblage structure to large-scale geographical patterns in floral diversity obtained from botanical literature. Assemblage structure of these three phyllostomid assemblages was influenced by differences in floral diversity at the three sites. At the Andean site, where understorey shrubs and epiphytes exhibit the highest diversity, the phyllostomid assemblage is mainly composed of understorey frugivores and nectarivorous species. By contrast, canopy frugivores are most abundant at the Amazonian site, coinciding with the high abundance of canopy fruiting trees. ABSTRACT. The morphology and infraciliature of Siroloxophyllum utriculariae (Penard, 1922) n. g., n. comb. were studied in live cells, with the scanning and transmission electron microscope, as well as in specimens impregnated with protargol and silver carbonate. The new genus, Siroloxophyllum , belongs to the Loxophyllidae and has a specific combination of characters, viz. an oral bulge surrounding almost the entire cell, three perioral kineties, a single brush kinety, and a single right dorsolateral kinety. The ecology and faunistics of S. utriculariae are reviewed. It is a rare and infrequent predator preferring clean freshwaters. The somatic monokinetid of S. utriculariae has typical haptorid ultrastructure, including two transverse microtubular ribbons. The oral bulge is patterned string-like with riffles containing the transverse microtubular ribbons originating from the oral kinetids. Perioral kineties 1 and 2 consist of dikinetids having one basal body each ciliated; the nonciliated basal body is associated with a nematodesmal and a transverse microtubular ribbon. Perioral kinety 3 consists of ciliated monokinetids having a fine structure similar to the somatic kinetids; they form triads with the dikinetids from perioral kinety 2. The classification of pleurostomatid ciliates is reviewed. Two suborders (Amphileptina, Litonotina) and three families (Amphileptidae, Litonotidae, Loxophyllidae n. fam.) are recognized and defined.  相似文献
