We assessed the effects of prescribed burning and cutting on mouflon (Ovis gmelini musimon × Ovis sp.) spring habitat using an experimental design (17.28 ha) of 2 burned, 2 cut, and 2 untreated plots within a homogeneous stand dominated by heather (Erica cinerea and Calluna vulgaris). Overall, we found a shift in treated plots from ligneous species to herbaceous species with high digestive and energetic values for mouflon. We also found a consistently higher number of mouflon feeding on these treated habitats compared to untreated plots. Such effects were still apparent 4 years after habitat modifications. Our approaches could be used by managers to improve and maintain the range of mouflon populations experiencing habitat loss (e.g., woody plant encroachment) and for which the condition of an animal has often a high economical value through trophy hunting. © 2011 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

Fungi have showed a great potential for the biological control of nematodes. However, they have not been evaluated for the control of animal and/or human parasites transmitted by egg contaminated soils. Environmental contamination with Toxocara spp. eggs is a public health problem. Accidental swallowing of Toxocara canis eggs (a nematode of dogs) usually results on a zoonotic infection (toxocarosis). The objectives of this research were: 1) To test the presence of antagonistic fungi against T. canis in the soil in public places of La Plata city, Argentina, infected with eggs of this parasite, 2) To determine the possible association between biotic and abiotic factors of the soil with the presence of fungal parasites of egg nematodes. Soil samples were tested for: textural type, organic matter (%), pH, presence of egg-parasite fungi, of larvae and of nematode eggs, in particular of Toxocara spp. The studied area showed the following characteristics: pH: 6.6-8.0, organic matter: 1.2-70%, with a predominantly loam texture. The following antagonistic fungal genera were identified: Acremonium, Aspergillus, Chrysosporium, Fusarium, Humicola, Mortierella, Paecilomyces and Penicillium. A prevalence of 70% was detected for nematode eggs, of 33% for Toxocara spp. eggs and of 90% for larvae. No association between the presence of egg-parasite fungi and the considered factors was found. More studies are necessary to know the natural antagonism factors to T. canis eggs for its in situ biological control.  相似文献

Aspergillus terreus, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Fusarium oxysporum, Gliocladium roseum, Penicillium spp., Talaromyces helicus and Trichoderma koningii were isolated from heavily polluted streams near an industrial area in La Plata, Argentina. The fungi were obtained from sediments with 0.25–0.50 mg Cd/l and they were isolated in cadmium-basal medium. They were then cultivated to evaluate their Cd detoxification abilities. The biomass developed in static assays represented 5–53% of the yield of stirred cultures, for the different fungal species, although the cadmium absorption were similar in both cases. These soil fungi represented 50% of the total isolates and their mycelial growth was conspicuous in these polluted sediments. Although bacteria have been mentioned as active microorganisms against heavy metals, the mycelial fungi were able to develop a significantly higher mass to sequestrate more metals. Thus, they could be used in remediation biotechnology to improve the Cd detoxification of chronically contaminated habitats.  相似文献

Aspergillus niger, isolated from hydrocarbon-contaminated soil, was examined for its potential to degrade phenanthrene and pyrene. Two novel metabolites, 1-methoxyphenanthrene and 1-methoxypyrene, were identified by conventional chemical techniques. Minor metabolites identified were 1- and 2-phenanthrol and 1-pyrenol. No 14CO2 evolution was observed in either [14C]phenanthrene or [14C]pyrene cultures.  相似文献

Pichia membranaefaciens, Cryptococcus laurentii, Rhodotorula glutinis and Candida krusei were isolated from contaminated sites. A significant variability in cell forms and in assimilation profiles was observed in the C. krusei strains. The chitin synthase activity and chitin content allowed us to differentiate three strain types. The variability of the phenotypic traits was higher in C. krusei strains isolated from heavily polluted sites. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

In order to assess the role of yeasts in the natural detoxification process of sediments polluted with biaryl compounds, indigenous yeast species able to degrade biphenyl (BP) were isolated and identified. The degradation ability of 24 strains of the genera Candida spp., Cryptococcus spp., Pichia spp., Rhodotorula spp., Trichosporon spp. and Yarrowia spp. was evaluated by the identification of the BP-metabolites, by HPLC analysis. 4-Hydroxybiphenyl was the main derivative in the Candida krusei, C. tenuis, C. tropicalis, Pichia haplophila, Rhodotorula glutinis, Trichosporon pullulans and Yarrowia lipolytica cultures. 3-Hydroxybiphenyl was detected in minor amounts in the culture supernatant of C. tropicalis, C. krusei strains and R. glutinis. Further hydroxylation led to 3,4-dihydroxy and 2,3-dihydroxybiphenyl; the former in C. tropicalis, C. krusei and R. glutinis cultures, and the latter only in the R. glutinis assays. The cleavage product 4-phenyl-2-pyrone-6-carboxylic acid, was observed in R. glutinis and Y. lipolytica cultures. The degradation ability of the R. glutinis isolates was noteworthy; as four hydrolxylated intermediates and a ring-cleavage product were obtained in both strain cultures. The species studied in this report were dominant in polluted sediments; furthermore, R. glutinis had been mentioned as able to degrade other aromatic hydrocarbons and had high relevance in bioremediation experiments.  相似文献

In animal communication, signal loudness is often ignored and seldom measured. We used a playback experiment to examine the role of vocal loudness (i.e., sound pressure level) in sibling to sibling communication of nestling barn owls Tyto alba. In this species, siblings vocally negotiate among each other for priority access to parental food resources. Call rate and call duration play key roles in this vocal communication system, with the most vocal nestlings deterring their siblings from competing for access to the food item next delivered by parents. Here, we broadcast calls at different loudness levels and call rate to live nestlings. The loudness of playback calls did not affect owlets' investment in call rate, call duration or call loudness. The rate at which playback calls were broadcast affected owlets' call rate but did not influence their response in terms of loudness. This suggests that selection for producing loud signals may be weak in this species, as loud calls may attract predators. Moreover, given that owlets do not overlap their calls and that they communicate to nearby siblings in the silence of the night, loud signals may not be necessary to convey reliable information about food need.  相似文献
