doi: 10.1111/j.1741‐2358.2011.00539.x The influence of mandibular implant‐retained overdentures in masticatory efficiency Objective: To evaluate the masticatory efficiency of patients rehabilitated with conventional dentures (CDs) or implant‐retained mandibular overdentures. Background: Despite the evident benefits of implants on mastication as assessed by subjective patient‐based outcomes, the extent of implant overdenture treatment effect on food comminution is not well established. Materials and methods: A randomised clinical trial was carried out with 29 completely edentulous patients divided into two groups. The first group was rehabilitated with a mandibular overdenture retained by two splinted implants with bar‐clip system, while the second group was rehabilitated with a mandibular CD. Both groups also were rehabilitated with maxillary CDs. Masticatory efficiency and patient satisfaction were assessed 3 months after denture insertion. Masticatory efficiency was evaluated through the colorimetric method with the beads as the artificial test‐food. Comparisons for masticatory efficiency and patient satisfaction were performed using Student’s t‐test (α = 0.05). Results: No significant statistical difference was found for masticatory efficiency (p = 0.198). Patient overall satisfaction was significantly higher for the mandibular overdenture (p < 0.001). In addition, mandibular overdenture patients were significantly more satisfied with chewing experience (p < 0.05) and retention of the lower denture (p < 0.005). Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that mandibular overdenture significantly improves chewing experience, although limited effect on masticatory efficiency has been observed.  相似文献

Exotic invasive shrubs can form dense monocultures in forest understories, which can have cascading effects on ecosystem structure and function. Amur honeysuckle, an exotic shrub that forms dense canopies in eastern forests, has the potential to alter plant community structure and ecosystem functions, such as primary production and decomposition. The goal of this study was to examine foliar productivity and leaf litter decomposition in forests invaded by Amur honeysuckle (Lonicera maackii) and to determine the extent to which the presence of this dominant exotic species may alter ecosystem function in these forests. We found that forests invaded by Amur honeysuckle had 16 times greater honeysuckle foliar biomass and 1.5 times lower total foliar biomass than forests of equivalent tree basal area, but having few honeysuckle shrubs. This suggests that productivity of native tree and shrub species may be reduced where honeysuckle density is high. Additionally, honeysuckle litter decayed four times faster and released nitrogen more rapidly than sugar maple litter, and sugar maple litter decayed 19% faster in forests invaded by Amur honeysuckle. These findings suggest that forests invaded by Amur honeysuckle may exhibit lower rates of organic matter accrual and less nitrogen retention in the forest floor. Since honeysuckle leaves develop in early spring before those of other shrubs or trees in the area, the rapid release of nitrogen from honeysuckle litter that we measured in early spring is timed to benefit this invasive species. The temporally coincident phenologies of nitrogen release during decomposition with the foliar growth needs of this shrub indicates that a potential positive feedback loop may exist between these processes that promotes continued growth and dominance of honeysuckle shrubs in these forested systems.  相似文献

Decomposition of plant material is a complex process that requiresinteraction among a diversity of microorganisms whose presence and activity issubject to regulation by a wide range of environmental factors. Analysis ofextracellular enzyme activity (EEA) provides a way to relate the functionalorganization of microdecomposer communities to environmental variables. In thisstudy, we examined EEA in relation to litter composition and nitrogendeposition. Mesh bags containing senescent leaves of Quercusborealis (red oak), Acer rubrum (red maple) andCornus florida (flowering dogwood) were placed on forestfloor plots in southeastern New York. One-third of the plots were sprayedmonthly with distilled water. The other plots were sprayed monthly withNH4NO3 solution at dose rates equivalent to 2 or 8 g N m–2 y–1. Mass loss, litter composition, fungal mass, and the activities ofeight enzymes were measured on 13 dates for each litter type. Dogwood wasfollowed for one year, maple for two, oak for three. For each litter type andtreatment, enzymatic turnover activities were calculated from regressions of LN(%mass remaining) vs. cumulative activity. The decomposition of dogwood litterwas more efficient than that of maple and oak. Maple litter had the lowestfungal mass and required the most enzymatic work to decompose, even though itsmass loss rate was twice that of oak. Across litter types, N amendment reducedapparent enzymatic efficiencies and shifted EEA away from N acquisition andtoward P acquisition, and away from polyphenol oxidation and towardpolysaccharide hydrolysis. The effect of these shifts on decomposition ratevaried with litter composition: dogwood was stimulated, oak was inhibited andmaple showed mixed effects. The results show that relatively small shifts intheactivity of one or two critical enzymes can significantly alter decompositionrates.  相似文献

Snakes of the opisthoglyphous genus Philodryas are widespread in South America and cause most bites by colubrids in this region. In this study, we examined the neurotoxic and myotoxic effects of venom from Philodryas patagoniensis in biventer cervicis and phrenic nerve-diaphragm preparations and we compared the biochemical activities of venoms from P. patagoniensis and Philodryas olfersii. Philodryas patagoniensis venom (40 microg/mL) had no effect on mouse phrenic nerve-diaphragm preparations but caused time-dependent neuromuscular blockade of chick biventer cervicis preparations. This blockade was not reversed by washing. The highest concentration of venom tested (40 microg/mL) significantly reduced (p<0.05) the contractures to exogenous acetylcholine (55 microM and 110 microM) and K(+) (13.4 mM) after 120 min; lower concentrations of venom had no consistent or significant effect on these responses. Venom caused a concentration- and time-dependent release of creatine kinase (CK) from biventer cervicis preparations. Histological analysis showed contracted muscle fibers at low venom concentrations and myonecrosis at high concentrations. Philodryas venoms had low esterase and phospholipase A(2) but high proteolytic activities compared to the pitviper Bothrops jararaca. SDS-PAGE showed that the Philodryas venoms had similar electrophoretic profiles, with most proteins having a molecular mass of 25-80 kDa. Both of the Philodryas venoms cross-reacted with bothropic antivenom in ELISA, indicating the presence of proteins immunologically related to Bothrops venoms. RP-HPLC of P. patagoniensis venom yielded four major peaks, each of which contained several proteins, as shown by SDS-PAGE. These results indicate that P. patagoniensis venom has neurotoxic and myotoxic components that may contribute to the effects of envenoming by this species.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to obtain information on the transfer of radiocobalt in freshwater environments that can be used to predict its environmental distribution. The sediment-water behaviour of 60Co in freshwater systems was studied through adsorption and desorption experiments undertaken using sediments and water from Fratel Reservoir in the Tejo River. The suspended sediment concentrations (Cs: 500–2000 mg 1–1) and Co distribution coefficient (Kd) were inversely related: Kd = 2211–2001 ln [Cs]; Kd ranged from 4000 to 8000 ml g–1. With a suspended sediment concentration of 1000 mg 1–1, the 60Co concentration remaining in solution (Ct) was given by: Ct = 49.4 e–0.584t + 46.3 e–0.014t; where t is the time in days and the half-life periods are 1.2 and 50 days. In a closed system, desorption of 60Co could be described by a one-component relation with a half-life of 104 days, and a two component relation (half-life 5 hours and 45 days) in an open system. In river water the 60Co was found to be almost 100% in cationic forms, however, in the presence of sediment there was a decrease in the proportion of cationic forms (to 50%), with some anionic forms appearing.  相似文献

From a screening study of various potential inhibitors for cholinesterases (ChEs), compound (rac)-1 (4-((3-hydroxy-2-oxo-3-phenylindolin-1-yl) methyl) piperidin-1-ium chloride) showed an IC50 of 18?μM for butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE). Herein we present a toxicological and pharmacological evaluation of (rac)-1 to determine its potential for use as an alternative ChE inhibitor for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. The strategy adopted included in vivo and ex vivo studies with mouse models, Molecular Modelling and Saturation Transfer Difference (STD) NMR studies.Preliminary molecular docking studies were conducted with both (R) and (S)-1 with acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and BuChE, prior to advancing to the mouse model, and indeed favorable interactions were observed, with (R)-1 showing the best binding with AChE and (S)-1 with BuChE. STD-NMR studies were used to successfully validate these results. Toxicological studies were also conducted using the Artemia salina model, with donepezil as reference. It was found that in the in vivo mouse studies that (rac)-1 presented a slightly better inhibition of AChE (0.096?µmol.min?1.mg?1) than donepezil (0.112?µmol.min?1.mg?1) and the same level of inhibition for BuChE as donepezil (0.014?µmol.min?1.mg?1).  相似文献

The inner-membrane protein BacA affects Brucella LPS structure. A bacA deletion mutant of Brucella abortus, known as KL7 (bacA(mut)-KL7), is attenuated in BALB/c mice and protects against challenge. Thus, bacA mutation was a candidate for incorporation into live attenuated vaccines. We assessed bacA(mut)-KL7 in 2 additional mouse strains: the more resistant C57BL/6 that produces interferon-gamma throughout the infection and the highly susceptible interferon-gamma-deficient C57BL/6 in which brucellae exhibit continual exponential growth. While it was hypothesized that bacA(mut)-KL7 would exhibit even greater attenuation relative to its parent strain B. abortus 2308 in C57BL/6 mice than it did in BALB/c mice, this was not the case. Moreover, it was more pathogenic in C57BL/6 interferon-gamma-deficient mice than 2308 causing abscesses and wasting even though the splenic loads of bacA(mut)-KL7 were significantly lower. These 2 observations were correlated, respectively, with an ability of IFNgamma-activated macrophages to equivalently control strains 2308 and bacA(mut)-KL7 and the ability of bacA(mut)-KL7 organism and its LPS to induce greater amounts of pro-inflammatory cytokines than 2308. We conclude that attenuation properties of bacA mutation are dependent upon the nature of the host but more importantly that bacterial gene deletion can result in increased host pathology without an increase in bacterial load, crucial considerations for vaccine design.  相似文献
