MATURE 5S, 16S and 23S ribosomal RNA species present in E. coli ribosomes are the end products of complex biosyn-thetic pathways. They are formed by reduction in length, and methylation of longer RNA chains transcribed on the ribosomal RNA cistrons of E. coli DNA. While these modifications take place the ribosome structure is formed by progressive addition of ribosomal proteins and conformational changes in the resulting ribonucleoprotein precursor particles1.  相似文献

Mus spicilegus has become a popular biological model species in the last decade because of the evolutionary interest of its behavioural particularities (the building of mounds, bi-parental care and monogamous mating system). The genetic structure of M. spicilegus populations should reflect those life-history traits. Although many studies have reported on mound-building mouse populations in the field or in a semi-natural enclosure, only one used hyper variable genetic markers to assess parentage and social structure. In the present study conducted in Hungary, we analysed individuals from seven highly populous mounds in autumn with the set of loci used in a previous study. Our results confirmed that mounds are inhabited by juveniles from several parental units, but revealed population differences. In a capture–recapture field session in spring, we assessed genetic relationships between individuals after dispersal from the mounds, the other key moment of the life cycle of this species. The results indicate that the social structure at this moment reflects a transition phase between the large over-wintering groups and the monogamous pairs described later in the year. Social bounds forged during the long winter cohabitation may have lasting effects on social and genetic structure of this species. Using an intensity rating with no external calibration, experiments were designed to measure the sensory oil-water partition coefficients of four aroma molecules (benzaldehyde, ethyl butyrate, linalool and acetophenone) as the ratios of concentration producing stimuli of equivalent intensities. Flavored water and oil phases were successively assessed for odor intensity by 24 panelists who were given total freedom regarding scaling strategy. Each session combined five concentration levels of three out of the four studied aromas in a solvent (water or oil). A predominant concentration effect was found for each aroma in both solvents and concentration dependencies of perceived intensity above water and oil were similar. Experimental data were modeled with Fechner, Stevens and Hill equations. Combining results above water and oil solutions to feed a common model led to the evaluation of an overall sensory oil-water partition coefficient for each aroma compound. All three models produced similar partition coefficient values for each aroma that were lower than the related instrumental partition coefficients. Biases previously detected when external calibration had been used were reduced in a large proportion while suggested enhancement of odor intensity by water vapor could not be excluded.  相似文献

The evolution of parasite-defence grooming in ungulates   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
Grooming repertoires are exhibited by all terrestrial mammals, and removal of ectoparasites is an important ancestral and current function. Parasite‐defence grooming is regulated both by a central control mechanism (programmed grooming model) and by cutaneous stimulation from bites (stimulus‐driven model). To study the evolution of parasite‐defence grooming in ungulates, we compared species‐typical grooming behaviour with host morphology and habitat to test predictions of the programmed grooming model while taking into account phylogenetic relatedness. We observed grooming in 60 ungulate species at ectoparasite‐free zoological parks in which the confound of differential tick exposure was controlled for and stimulus‐driven grooming was ruled out. Concentrated‐changes tests indicated that sexually dimorphic grooming (in which breeding males groom less than females) has coevolved with sexual body size dimorphism, suggesting that intrasexual selection has favoured reduced grooming that enhances vigilance of males for oestrous females and rival males. Concentrated‐changes tests also revealed that the evolution of complex oral grooming (involving alternate use of both teeth and tongue) and adult allogrooming (whereby conspecifics oral groom body regions not accessible by self grooming) was concentrated in lineages inhabiting closed woodland or forest habitat associated with increased tick exposure, with such advanced grooming being most concentrated in Cervidae. Regression analyses of independent contrasts indicated that both host body size and habitat play a role in the evolution of species‐typical oral grooming rates, as previously reported. These results indicate that the observed grooming represents centrally driven grooming patterns favoured by natural selection in each lineage. Summary

Stichopus chloronotus (Brandt, 1835) is one among nine aspidochirotide holothurian species known to reproduce both sexually by broadcast spawning and asexually by transverse fission. New data on the sexual cycle of this species in La Réunion are presented here and information available on sexual and asexual reproduction in this species is summarised. Sexual reproduction on La Réunion shows a distinct seasonality with a main spawning period in the warm season (November-February). The spawning period the Great Barrier Reef appears to be at the same time. Some intriguing deviations from unity in sex-ratio, usually biased towards more male individuals, have been observed in both geographic regions (sex ratio at La Reunion 31:1). New data on the asexual reproduction of this species in La Réunion confirm the high rates of fission. The peak of asexual reproduction in both the Indian and Pacific Ocean was observed in winter (June-July). Thus, asexual reproduction in this species occurs outside the season for sexual reproduction. The rate of asexual reproduction appears to vary between sample locations. However, results of population genetic studies on S. chloronotus (Uthicke et al., 1999; Uthicke et al., 2001) indicated that in most populations investigated a maximum of about 60% of all individuals may be derived from sexual recruitment. Cluster analyses on genetic distances between populations grouped populations within Oceans together, with the exception of one sample from a nearshore reef of the GBR. Although genetic differences between the two regions exist, these are relatively small regarding the large geographic distance. We conclude that asexual reproduction in S. chloronotus is important to maintain local population sizes, but that larval exchange between populations mediated by sexual reproduction is important for colonisation of new areas and to provide connectivity between populations. Here, we present the first synthesis of these phenomena for a holothurian species.  相似文献

Shoot branches or tillers develop from axillary buds. The dormancy versus outgrowth fates of buds depends on genetic, environmental and hormonal signals. Defoliation inhibits bud outgrowth indicating the role of leaf‐derived metabolic factors such as sucrose in bud outgrowth. In this study, the sensitivity of bud outgrowth to selective defoliation was investigated. At 6 d after planting (6 DAP), the first two leaves of sorghum were fully expanded and the third was partially emerged. Therefore, the leaves were selectively defoliated at 6 DAP and the length of the bud in the first leaf axil was measured at 8 DAP. Bud outgrowth was inhibited by defoliation of only 2 cm from the tip of the second leaf blade. The expression of dormancy and sucrose‐starvation marker genes was up‐regulated and cell cycle and sucrose‐inducible genes was down‐regulated during the first 24 h post‐defoliation of the second leaf. At 48 h, the expression of these genes was similar to controls as the defoliated plant recovers. Our results demonstrate that small changes in photosynthetic leaf area affect the propensity of tiller buds for outgrowth. Therefore, variation in leaf area and photosynthetic activity should be included when integrating sucrose into models of shoot branching.  相似文献
