Mice were injected with DNP-derivatives of thymus dependent (DNP-OA) and thymus-independent (DNP-Ficoll and TNP-LPS) antigens, and the response to TNP-LPS in vitro was studied after several priming periods. DNP-OA priming decreases the amount of cells responding to TNP-LPS in vitro. In the case of DNP-Ficoll and TNP-LPS-primed cells, there is an initial burst of responsiveness to TNP-LPS, which progressively decreases until an abolishment of TNP-LPS responsiveness is found at day 40 after immunization. The sensitivity to TNP-LPS reappears as new precursor cells differentiate into mature cells. We suggest that B cells progressively gain the capacity to respond to thymus-independent and thymus-dependent antigens (B1-B2 differentiation) and that challenge with a particle antigen increases the ratio of maturation throughout the pathway.  相似文献

Selective production of emulsifiers from glucose and fatty acids has been achieved using an immobilized Candida antarctica lipase. Optimization of process selectivity considers the solubilities of the sugar and its monoesters in acetone at different temperatures, the percentage of this organic solvent in the reaction mixture, and the reaction temperature. The solvent (acetone) is both easily eliminated and accepted by the European Community for use in the manufacture of foods and/or food additives. Different fatty acids with a longer length chain than that of caprylic acid may be employed. For saturated fatty acids longer than lauric acid, continuous precipitation of the monoester as it is formed at 40 degrees C permits nearly complete conversion (98%) of glucose to the monoester within 2-3 days. The procedure does not require total dissolution of the sugar, and precipitation of the monoester permits selective conversion of charges of glucose higher than 100 mg/mL solvent. A scaleup of the process under the optimum conditions gives high yields of 6-O-lauroyl glucose, which may be readily prepared on a gram scale. Copyright 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Small individuals (<15 cm long) of the clingfish Sicyases sanguineus consume as many as 18 seaweed species in Central Chile. Enteromorpha sp. was the only species able to survive digestion by fish recently collected from the field. Enteromorpha compressa and Gelidium chilense also survived by tissue regeneration when offered as food in the laboratory, but only E. compressa showed stimulation of swarmer production. In general, our results on a vertebrate species reproduce previous findings on diverse invertebrate species. Since fish are highly motile, their capacity to disperse algal species by defecation might be of great ecological importance.  相似文献

Benthic algae survive passage through the digestive tract of different types of grazers, either regenerating new tissues or releasing protoplasts and swarmers which act as accessory means of reproduction to generate new individuals. The ecological importance of this phenomenon is evaluated here by studying spores and fecal pellets. Alga fragments egested alive inside fecal pellets have some ecological advantages over free propagules. In intertidal habitats, the sticky nature of the pellets permits attachment to the substratum while protecting the contained algae from desiccation. In subtidal habitats, the pellets sink 8–22 times faster than the fastest sinking algal propagule. Quantification of swarmers and protoplasts released from algal fragments in the fecal pellets indicates densities of about 217 germlings·cm?2 and values of 300–700 propagules per pellet. Extrapolation of these results to field conditions based on number of grazers and pellets suggest production figures varying from 0.5–3.5 × 105to 1.3–1.5 × 106 propagules·m?2·12 h?1. These values are within known density ranges of settling spores in the field. The ecological significance of the phenomenon may be especially important at seasons when the density of grazers increases and the normal reproductive activity of the algae being consumed decreases.  相似文献

Sporeling coalescence in species of Gracilariales and Gigartinales is predicted to result in larger basal areas of growing disks as well as earlier initiation, increased abundance, and faster growth rates of erect shoots as compared to noncoalescent sporelings. These responses have been interpreted as providing mutual benefits for organisms living in aggregation, counterbalancing disadvantages associated with crowding. Quantitative evaluations of sporelings of Gracilaria chilensis failed to support several of these predictions. Sporelings were grown in the laboratory from a range of single sporelings to coalescent masses of 20 sporelings. Coalescent sporeling masses of G. chilensis exhibited larger basal areas than noncoalescent ones, but because the specific growth rates were inversely related to the original number of carpospores, no significant differences in actual area increments, during most of the experiment, were found among sporelings derived from one, two, or three to five coalescing sporelings. Initiation of erect shoots occurred at a similar time, regardless of their origin, i.e. coalescent or noncoalescent. Abundance of erect shoots was only loosely related to the number of coalescing sporelings. Even though by the end of the experiment (week 18), the total length of the longer erect shoots arising from coalescent sporeling masses was significantly greater than that of shoots arising from noncoalescent sporelings, total length was independent of the original number of coalescing sporelings. Furthermore, specific elongation rates between week 12 and week 18 were significantly greater for noncoalescent sporelings than for coalescent sporeling masses. Quantitative screening of other species seems necessary before generalizations on the ecological advantages of sporeling coalescence in seaweeds can be made.  相似文献

Resveratrol (RVTL) is a flavonoid found in red wine and has been publicized heavily as an anti-aging compound. Indeed, basic research confirms that although there is much hype in the promotion of RVTL, flavonoids such as RVTL have a wide range of biological effects. We here investigated the effects of RVTL treatment on hippocampal plasticity and memory performance in female Balb/C mice, a strain with low baseline levels of adult neurogenesis. Two weeks of treatment with RVTL (40 mg/kg) induced the production of new neurons in vivo by increasing cell survival and possibly precursor cell proliferation. In addition, RVTL decreased the number of apoptotic cells. The number of doublecortin (DCX)-expressing intermediate cells was increased. RVTL stimulated neuronal differentiation in vitro without effects on proliferation. In the dentate gyrus, RVTL promoted the formation and maturation of spines on granule cell dendrites. RVTL also improved performance in the step down passive avoidance test. The RVTL-treated mice showed increase in the levels of two key signaling proteins, phospho-Akt and phospho-PKC, suggesting the involvement of these signaling pathways. Our results support the vision that flavonoids such as resveratrol deserve further examination as plasticity-inducing compounds in the context of successful cognitive aging.  相似文献
