Using flow-through microcosms, we examined phosphorus (P) recycling by zebra mussels under conditions of nearly constant food resource supply and varying zebra mussel population densities (600–5200 ind./m2). At all density levels, zebra mussels filtered substantial algae, measured as chlorophyll biomass. Because chlorophyll biomass inputs were low throughout the study, zebra mussel biomass-specific rates of chlorophyll filtration declined with increasing density, suggesting food resource limitation at the higher densities. We observed net total P export and high zebra mussel biomass-specific rates of P recycling over time in microcosms at high zebra mussel densities. In systems with a low zebra mussel density, net total P export did not occur over time. Our results suggest the occurrence of P remineralization by zebra mussels and net loss associated with emaciation during periods of temporary starvation. These findings have implications for P dynamics since zebra mussels can be subjected to periods of starvation over seasonal and annual time scales.  相似文献

We compared P retention with direct measures of Psedimentation, estimated fromsediment cores (annual P sedimentation) and sedimenttraps (daily P sedimentation),to quantify P sedimentation in Eau Galle Reservoir,Wisconsin. Mean annual Pretention was similar to mean annual P sedimentation,as estimated from sediment corerates integrated over the entire lake basin,indicating that annual P mass balanceapproximated annual net P sedimentation in thisreservoir. However, sediment trap Prates, measured over the summer stratified period,overestimated P retention ratesdetermined over the same period, suggestingsubstantial deposition of internally-derived P.Inclusion of measured internal P loadings from avariety of sources in EauGalle Reservoir in a P mass balance only accounted foran additional 24% of thesummer sediment trap P rate, indicating substantialuncertainty in the overall P budget.Imbalances in the P budget may also suggest depositionof sediment from other as yetunquantified internal sources. Potential internalsources of P include sedimentresuspension and chemical release and direct uptake ofP from the sediment byphytoplankton.  相似文献

During the summer of 1983, cryptophytes, diatoms, cyanophytes, and the dinoflagellate, Ceratium hirundinella were most prominant among the phytoplankton of Eau Galle Reservoir. In the open water, cryptophytes and diatoms peaked in the spring, cyanophytes were most successful in the early summer, and Ceratium was dominant from mid-July until early August. In general, the sequence of events corresponded quite closely to the model of seasonal succession developed by the Plankton Ecology Group of the International Society of Limnology. To a large extent, the same pattern held in four experimental water columns. Departures from the model involved the roles of specific nutrients in diatom and cyanophyte periodicity. Diatoms began to yield to cyanophytes in late spring despite intermittent mixing and silica enrichment. Although capable of buoyancy regulation and thus well adapted to stable water columns, cyanophytes had greater increases in biomass in mixed columns, and in those columns, were most successful during a period of intermittent mixing. Cyanophyte success varied inversely with TN : TP ratios during the period of intermittent mixing, but not subsequently. By mid-July, Ceratium dominated the phytoplankton of every column except that of a mixed column in which conditions favored cyanophytes and large diatom species.  相似文献

Convective water exchange patterns, determined from water temperature variations, were examined in the Minky Creek embayment of Guntersville Reservoir, Alabama (USA), during the month of September, 1990. During periods of differential cooling, cooler water originating from shallow stations moved as an underflow current toward the center of the embayment, while warmer water moved as an overflow current toward the shore. During periods of differential heating, convective exchange was much more shallow, occurring in the upper 3 m of the water column. As warmer water from shallow regions moved out as an overrflow current, this water was replaced by a return flow of cooler water originating from the pelagic epilimnion. Wind speed appeared to influence convective exchange patterns during differential heating phases by affecting the depth of the surface mixed layer. The potential for convective exchanges during periods of differential cooling and heating occurred on 54% and 74% of the days, respectively, in September. This high potential for horizontal water exchanges in Guntersville Reservoir has strong implications for the lateral transport of dissolved constituents.  相似文献

Eau Galle Reservoir, Wisconsin, was treated with a hypolimnetic dose of aluminum sulfate (alum) in 1986 to diminish excessive phytoplankton production associated with high phosphorus loading from anoxic, profundal sediments. Prior to treatment, internal total phosphorus (TP) loading was 3 to 6 times greater than external TP loading during summer stratification. Periodic increases in epilimnetic TP mass and chlorophylla concentrations closely corresponded with elevated internal TP loading. For one year following treatment, internal TP loading and concentrations of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) in the hypolimnion were substantially reduced. However, abnormally high external TP loading during the stratified period of 1986 resulted in high TP mass and chlorophylla in the epilimnion. During the summers of 1987 and 1988, effects of alum treatment on internal TP loading were essentially negated, and epilimnetic TP mass and chlorophylla remained unchanged from pretreatment years. Multiple potential sources of P input to this reservoir make it difficult to reduce epilimnetic P and phytoplankton growth.  相似文献

We examined the impacts of macrophyte beds dominated by a canopy-forming (Myriophyllum sibiricum) and a meadow-forming (Chara canescens) species on bottom shear stress (τ) and resuspension in shallow Lake Christina, Minnesota (U.S.A.). Studies were conducted in late summer, 1998, when macrophyte biomass levels exceeded 200 g m?2, and in early summer, 2000, when biomass was greatly reduced (<20 g m?2) in both plant beds. The critical shear stress (τc) of sediments, measured experimentally in the laboratory, was low (1.4 dynes cm?2) indicating potential for resuspension in the absence of macrophytes. During 1998, turbidity was low at the M. sibiricum and Chara station, rarely increasing when calculated bottom τ (calculated from wave theory assuming no biomass obstruction) exceeded τsub c sub, indicating that both beds reduced sediment resuspension at high biomass levels. In situτ (estimated τ), measured via gypsum sphere dissolution, did not exceed τc above the sediment interface in either bed during 1998. In contrast, sediment resuspension occurred in both beds during similar high winds in 2000. However, estimated τ was lower than calculated bottom τ, suggesting that at low biomass, macrophytes were having some impact on τ.  相似文献

The distributions of ventilation-perfusion ratios, and the effects of 100% oxygen administration on the distributions, were studied in 3 foals from 4h to 9 days of age, using the multiple inert gas elimination technique. The distributions were calculated from the pulmonary clearance of 6 inert gases following infusion into a peripheral vein of a solution containing the inert gases. The results from a total of 8 studies showed several consistent features. The major findings were (i) the absence of low ventilation-perfusion ratios, i.e. regions where blood flow was greatly in excess of ventilation; (ii) the presence of variable right to left shunt; (iii) a reduction in this shunt with increasing post-natal age; (iv) the presence of a separate high mode of ventilation-perfusion ratios where ventilation was greatly in excess of blood flow and; (v) the observation that breathing enriched oxygen mixtures for 40 min did not increase the right to left shunt in any foal at any age studied. These studies indicate that hypoxaemia in the neonatal foal is attributable to right to left shunt which may be intrapulmonary or intracardiac, or both, rather than overperfusion of poorly ventilated lungs.  相似文献

Cooling of lakes through the water surface produces horizontal convective exchange flow between the littoral and the open waters. A mixed-cells-in-series model is developed which, using as input the evolution in time of vertical temperature profiles measured along the littoral slope, provides an estimate of the horizontal exchange flow rates. Application of the model to field data shows that the exchange flow can cause rapid renewal of the littoral waters. Thermally induced water exchange between littoral and pelagic regions transports dissolved constituents, e.g. nutrients, thereby affecting water quality in lacustrine systems.  相似文献

We examined sediment resuspension and light attenuation in relation to the potential for macrophytes to improve water quality conditions in Peoria Lake, Illinois (U.S.A.). The lake exhibited high total suspended solids (TSS) loading and retention of predominantly fine-grained particles in 2000. Large fetches along prevailing wind rose, coupled with shallow morphometry and sediment particles composed of >90% silt and clay resulted in frequent periods of sediment resuspension. As calculated (wave theory) shear stress increased above the critical shear stress (measured experimentally), turbidity increased substantially at a resuspension monitoring station. Resuspension model explorations suggested that establishment of submersed aquatic macrophytes could substantially reduce sediment resuspension in Peoria Lake. However, K d is currently very high, while Secchi transparency low, at in-lake stations. Thus, in order to establish a persistent macrophyte population in the lake to control resuspension, the underwater light regime will have to improve quite dramatically.  相似文献

The majority of lung cancers (LC) belong to the non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) type. The two main NSCLC sub-types, namely adenocarcinoma (AC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), respond differently to therapy. Whereas the link between cigarette smoke and lung cancer risk is well established, the relevance of non-canonical Wnt pathway up-regulation detected in SCC remains poorly understood. The present study was undertaken to investigate further the molecular events in canonical and non-canonical Wnt signalling during SCC development. A total of 20 SCC and AC samples with matched non-cancerous controls were obtained after surgery. TaqMan array analysis confirmed up-regulation of non-canonical Wnt5a and Wnt11 and identified down-regulation of canonical Wnt signalling in SCC samples. The molecular changes were tested in primary small airway epithelial cells (SAEC) and various lung cancer cell lines (e.g. A549, H157, etc). Our studies identified Wnt11 and Wnt5a as regulators of cadherin expression and potentiated relocation of β-catenin to the nucleus as an important step in decreased cellular adhesion. The presented data identifies additional details in the regulation of SCC that can aid identification of therapeutic drug targets in the future.  相似文献
