For decades, the bio-duck sound has been recorded in the Southern Ocean, but the animal producing it has remained a mystery. Heard mainly during austral winter in the Southern Ocean, this ubiquitous sound has been recorded in Antarctic waters and contemporaneously off the Australian west coast. Here, we present conclusive evidence that the bio-duck sound is produced by Antarctic minke whales (Balaenoptera bonaerensis). We analysed data from multi-sensor acoustic recording tags that included intense bio-duck sounds as well as singular downsweeps that have previously been attributed to this species. This finding allows the interpretation of a wealth of long-term acoustic recordings for this previously acoustically concealed species, which will improve our understanding of the distribution, abundance and behaviour of Antarctic minke whales. This is critical information for a species that inhabits a difficult to access sea-ice environment that is changing rapidly in some regions and has been the subject of contentious lethal sampling efforts and ongoing international legal action. 相似文献

We measured aboveground plant biomass and soil inorganic nitrogen pools in a biodiversity experiment in northern Sweden, with plant species richness ranging from 1 to 12 species. In general, biomass increased and nitrate pools decreased with increasing species richness. Transgressive overyielding of mixed plant communities compared to the most productive of the corresponding monocultures occurred in communities with and without legumes. N2 -fixing legumes had a fertilizing function, while non-legumes had a N retaining function. Plant communities with only legumes had a positive correlation between biomass and soil nitrate content, whereas in plant communities without legumes they were negatively correlated. Both nitrate and ammonium soil pools in mixed non-legume communities were approximately equal to the lowest observed in the corresponding monocultures. In mixed legume/non-legume communities, no correlation was found for soil nitrate with either biomass or legume biomass as percentage of total biomass. The idea of complementarity among species in nitrogen acquisition was supported in both pure non-legume and mixed non-legume/legume communities. In the latter, however, facilitation through increased nitrogen availability and retention, was probably dominating. Our results suggest that diversity effects on biomass and soil N pools through resource use complementarity depend on the functional traits of species, especially N2 fixation or high productivity. 相似文献

Peptide therapeutics have traditionally faced many challenges including low bioavailability, poor proteolytic stability and difficult cellular uptake. Conformationally constraining the backbone of a peptide into a macrocyclic ring often ameliorates these problems and allows for the development of a variety of new drugs. Such peptide-based pharmaceuticals can enhance the multi-faceted functionality of peptide side chains, permitting the peptides to bind cellular targets and receptors necessary to impart their role, while protecting them from degrading cellular influences. In the work described here, we developed three cyclic peptides, VP mimic1, VP mimic2 and OT mimic1, which mimic endocrine hormones vasopressin and oxytocin. Making notable changes to the overall structure and composition of the parent hormones, we synthesized the mimics and tested their durability against treatment with three proteases chosen for their specificity: pepsin, alpha-chymotrypsin, and pronase. Vasopressin and oxytocin contain a disulfide linkage leaving them particularly vulnerable to deactivation from the reducing environment inside the cell. Thus, we increased the complexity of our assays by adding reducing agent glutathione to each mixture. Subsequently, we discovered each of our mimics withstood protease treatment with less degradation and/or a slower rate of degradation as compared to both parent hormones and a linear control peptide. 相似文献

We have previously shown that methionine–heme iron coordination is perturbed in domain-swapped dimeric horse cytochrome c. To gain insight into the effect of methionine dissociation in dimeric cytochrome c, we investigated its interaction with cyanide ion. We found that the Soret and Q bands of oxidized dimeric cytochrome c at 406.5 and 529 nm redshift to 413 and 536 nm, respectively, on addition of 1 mM cyanide ion. The binding constant of dimeric cytochrome c and cyanide ion was obtained as 2.5 × 104 M?1. The Fe–CN and C–N stretching (ν Fe–CN and ν CN) resonance Raman bands of CN?-bound dimeric cytochrome c were observed at 443 and 2,126 cm?1, respectively. The ν Fe–CN frequency of dimeric cytochrome c was relatively low compared with that of other CN?-bound heme proteins, and a relatively strong coupling between the Fe–C–N bending and porphyrin vibrations was observed in the 350–450-cm?1 region. The low ν Fe–CN frequency suggests weaker binding of the cyanide ion to dimeric cytochrome c compared with other heme proteins possessing a distal heme cavity. Although the secondary structure of dimeric cytochrome c did not change on addition of cyanide ion according to circular dichroism measurements, the dimer dissociation rate at 45 °C increased from (8.9 ± 0.7) × 10?6 to (3.8 ± 0.2) × 10?5 s?1, with a decrease of about 2 °C in its dissociation temperature obtained with differential scanning calorimetry. The results show that diatomic ligands may bind to the heme iron of dimeric cytochrome c and affect its stability. 相似文献
