During long-term storage in modified gas atmospheres (MGA), some of the biochemical changes occurring in tomato fruit, cv. Sleaford Abundance, were compared with those in fruit of some Israeli cultivars which had been selected for firmness and slow ripening. The MGA used in the experiments did not succeed in completely restricting changes in sugars and acids during storage, although colour change was prevented. This separation of processes is discussed in relation to the practice of long-term storage and its implications for fruit flavour.  相似文献

Abstract.  In some parasitoid species, the serosa membrane breaks apart at hatching and produces teratocyte cells that assume various functions (immunossupression, secretion and nutrition) mediating host–parasitoid relationships. Teratocyte growth pattern may thus reflect the host suitability for a parasitoid. The teratocyte growth pattern (increase in size and number of teratocytes as a function of time) is studied and used as an indirect measure of fitness to compare the development of the endoparasitoid Dinocampus coccinellae in a marginal host, the coccinellid Harmonia axyridis , and in a suitable host, Coleomegilla maculata . Indirect measures of fitness recorded in both host species confirm that C. maculata is a suitable host for D. coccinellae contrary to the marginal host H. axyridis. According to regression analysis, teratocyte numbers decrease linearly whereas teratocyte size increases linearly with time in the suitable host C. maculata (larvae or adults). In the marginal host, parasitism occurs only in the larval stage where a delay in the parasitoid larval development is observed. Increase in teratocyte size is also highly variable. The teratocyte growth pattern of the parasitoid in the marginal host does not follow the linear model found in the suitable host. Teratocyte growth pattern may be a useful criterion to evaluate host-suitability and host range of parasitoids.  相似文献

Tomato fruits of six cultivars were harvested at three different stages of maturity or were harvested when mature-green and then stored in a modified gas atmosphere (2·5-4% O2; 4% CO2) for 2 months. The fresh and stored fruits were analysed for their contents of sugars, organic acids and free amino acids, while proteins were separated by discontinuous electrophoresis on polyacrylamide gels. In general, the low molecular weight components decreased during storage. A comparison of mature-green fruits before and after storage showed that although total protein was not decreased, a different electrophoretic pattern was obtained following controlled atmosphere (CA) storage. Thus, although controlled atmosphere storage repressed the loss of chlorophyll and synthesis of lycopene, carotenoids and xanthophylls, the biochemical parameters measured showed a controlled change towards the conditions exemplified by ripe fruits. This was not so marked in some cultivars as it was in others.  相似文献

A comparative study of the isoenzymes involved in sugar and organic acid metabolism was made during long-term storage of Sleaford Abundance, a poor storing tomato cultivar, and several breeding lines selected for fruit firmness or retarded ripening. Of the enzymes investigated, major changes occurred in hexokinase, enzymes of the hexose monophosphate shunt, NADH and NADPH dehydrogenase during storage but no major differences in the patterns of enzyme change were detected between cultivars.  相似文献

In a range of dessert cultivars of Malus pumila, the esterase in the fruit showed a rise in activity during the period of fresh weight gain. This was the case when activity was expressed on a protein or a fresh weight basis. Both fruit which matured at 100 days after anthesis, and fruit which matured later, showed a similar rate of increase. However, a cultivar used for processing rather than eating showed a much reduced rate of esterase increase.  相似文献

Creating conservation policies for declining migrant species in response to global change presents a considerable challenge. Migrant species are affected by factors at breeding grounds, overwintering areas and during migration. Accordingly, reserve-based management during the breeding season is not always a suitable conservation strategy. Recent Pied Flycatcher population decline typifies the pattern for many migrants. The UK population has declined by 43% in the past decade, but explanations, and possible solutions, remain elusive. We use 15 years of data (1990–2004) from a declining British population to establish possible reasons for decline, considering: (1) breeding performance (including the influences of competition and predation); (2) weather patterns caused by the winter phase (December–March) of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), which modify conditions experienced at wintering grounds and on migration; and (3) possible impacts of climate change on spring temperatures. We conclude that decreasing breeding performance is contributing to decline, but that non-breeding factors are more important. Winter NAO index is a strong predictor of breeding population, probably because it influences food abundance in Africa and at migratory stopover points. Importantly, however, year itself enhances the predictive model, indicating that influences on population remain unaccounted for by current research. Management strategies based on increasing breeding productivity cannot fully address population decline because non-breeding factors appear important. However, as breeding performance is declining, breeding-based strategies remain useful conservation tools. To this end, our research indicates that optimal placement of nestboxes as regards orientation and habitat management to increase larval food supplies could increase productivity significantly.  相似文献

The growth of young tomato plants in nutrient solution or in soil and infected with Pyrenochaeta lycopersici Schneider & Gerlach, the cause of tomato brown root rot, was decreased relative to that of uninfected plants. The roots of plants grown in nutrient solution and infected with a mycelial mat of the pathogen contained lower concentrations of potassium and higher concentrations of calcium than roots of uninfected plants. These changes occurred largely in the visibly affected tissue, as opposed to the root system as a whole. The concentrations of magnesium, total nitrogen and phosphorus in the roots of infected plants were not significantly different from those of control plants. Magnesium, nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in the tops of infected plants were also not significantly different from those of healthy plants, but no consistent changes were found in the concentrations of calcium and potassium. Young tomato plants grown in soil infested with P. lycopersici contained lower concentrations of phosphorus and potassium in the tops than plants grown in sterilized soil. It was not possible to separate intact damaged root systems of infected plants from soil. The changes in composition found in infected plants are discussed in relation to possible methods of manipulating the nutrition of the plant to offset the effects of the disease on crop yield.  相似文献

A survey of fluvial landforms was conducted at Widden Brook, an unregulated sand‐bed stream in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales (NSW), Australia, to investigate the physical factors associated with vegetation pattern in Riverine Oak Forest. Groundwater depth and chemistry (pH, dissolved oxygen and electrical conductivity) were measured using piezometers and submersible data loggers on three fluvial landforms (i.e. toe of bank, top of bank and floodplain) along five transects. Floristic composition, canopy cover, bare ground and leaf litter were assessed within 45 quadrats on the three landforms along the five transects. Elevation above the bed and flood return period were determined by cross‐sectional survey and flood frequency analysis, while flow duration was determined from the gauge record. Canonical correspondence analysis demonstrated that vegetation composition was associated with average watertable depth and flood variables to a similar extent. The relative importance of these factors would be expected to vary with flood‐ and drought‐dominated climatic periods on a scale of several decades. Floristic composition was moderately associated with the canopy cover of the dominant woody species, Casuarina cunninghamiana (Miq.), but weakly correlated with bare ground and groundwater chemistry. Suites of species were associated with particular fluvial landforms and their corresponding flood and watertable conditions. The reach examined has characteristics similar to both the semi‐arid and mesic riparian ecosystems of the USA. The coarse sediments, high flood variability, short flood duration and dominance by a pioneer tree that relies on groundwater are similar to riparian ecosystems in the western USA, while the relatively broad floodplain and the development of a forest canopy that is associated with the distribution of understorey plants are similar to the mesic riparian systems in the eastern USA.  相似文献

Abstract. We have examined the widely held theory that ethanol toxicity is a prime cause of the injury and death of plants in soil flooded with water. The tests were made on peas ( Pisum sativum L.) at the early flowering or fruiting stages, when they are known to be severely injured by flooding.
Supplying ethanol in aerobic or anaerobic nutrient solution at similar concentrations to those we found in flooded soil (up to 3.9 mol m−3) or in the xylem sap of flooded pea plants (up to 2.1 mol m−3) caused no injury. One hundred times these concentrations gave little extra effect and failed to simulate flooding injury. Isolated leaf protoplasts and detached leaves were also resistant to damage by ethanol at these concentrations.
Other published measurements of ethanol concentrations in flooded plants are similar to or less than those we report for pea plants. Exceptions include root nodules and germinating pea seeds. Reports by others of responses to applied ethanol in a wide variety of circumstances confirm that in flooded plants the amounts are probably too small to explain the observed injury. Alternative mechanisms are discussed.  相似文献
