We assessed the potential impacts of land-use changes resulting from a change in the current biofuel policy on biodiversity in Europe. We evaluated the possible impact of both arable and woody biofuel crops on changes in distribution of 313 species pertaining to different taxonomic groups. Using species-specific information on habitat suitability as well as land use simulations for three different biofuel policy options, we downscaled available species distribution data from the original resolution of 50 to 1 km. The downscaled maps were then applied to analyse potential changes in habitat size and species composition at different spatial levels. Our results indicate that more species might suffer from habitat losses rather than benefit from a doubled biofuel target, while abolishing the biofuel target would mainly have positive effects. However, the possible impacts vary spatially and depend on the biofuel crop choice, with woody crops being less detrimental than arable crops. Our results give an indication for policy and decision makers of what might happen to biodiversity under a changed biofuel policy in the European Union. The presented approach is considered to be innovative as to date no comparable policy impact assessment has been applied to such a large set of key species at the European scale. 相似文献

The aim of the present work was to clarify the origin and phylogenetic position of the species belonging to the genus Ilex (Aquifoliaceae), especially the South American species. Phylogenetic relationships of the genus Ilex were investigated using the plastid psbA‐trnH intergenic spacer and parsimony and Bayesian analyses. The psbA‐trnH intergenic spacer was shown to evolve slowly within Ilex, but a major gap present in this region was useful in the phylogenetic study of the genus. To obtain more potentially parsimonious characters, atpB‐rbcL intergenic spacer data were combined with those for psbA‐trnH. Many gaps present in the psbA‐trnH region were useful in the phylogenetic study of the genus Ilex. The topology of the trees showed that, in general, the clades are strongly related to geographical areas, a fact especially evident in certain different Asian lineages. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 159 , 182–193. 相似文献

Ecological interactions between Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus, L.) and the phytoplanktonic community of the Furnas Reservoir (Brazil) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
1. Exotic invasive species modify natural food webs in a way frequently hard to predict. In several aquatic environments in Brazil the introduction of Oreochromis niloticus (tilapia) was followed by changes in water quality. Yet, because of its rapid and easy growth, this fish has been used in many aquaculture programmes around the country. 2. To measure the effects of tilapia on the phytoplankton community and on water conditions of a large tropical reservoir in south‐eastern Brazil (Furnas Reservoir), we performed two in situ experiments using three controls (no fish) and three tilapia enclosures (high fish density). Abiotic and biotic parameters were measured at 4 day intervals for 28 days. 3. Fish presence increased nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) availability (ammonium 260 and 70% mean increase – first and second experiment; and total phosphorus 540 and 270% mean increase) via excretion. Nutrient recycling by fish can thus be significant in the nutrient dynamics of the reservoir. The higher chlorophyll a concentration in the experimental fish tanks (86 and 34 μg L?1, first and second experiment, respectively) was the result of a positive bottom‐up effect on the phytoplankton community (approximately 2 μg L?1 in the reservoir and control tank). 4. Because tilapia feed selectively on large algae (mainly cyanobacteria and diatoms), several small‐sized or mucilaginous colonial chlorophyceans proliferated at the end of the experiments. Thus, the trophic cascade revealed strong influences on algal composition as well as on biomass. 5. Tilapia can contribute to the eutrophication of a waterbody by both top‐down and bottom‐up forces. In particular, by supplying considerable amount of nutrients it promotes the increase of fast growing algae. Tilapia must be used cautiously in aquaculture to avoid unexpected environmental degradation. 相似文献

Summary The female gonad of two fresh-water prorhynchids, Geocentrophora baltica and Prorhynchus stagnalis, has been investigated by means of conventional electron microscopy and cytochemical techniques. Both species have an unpaired germovitellarium located under the gut; accessory cells surround the germovitellarium of G. baltica. The germovitellarium consists of a restricted germinative area where early differentiating oocytes and vitellocytes are randomly associated, and an extensive growth area with follicular organization. Each follicle consists of a single alecithal oocyte surrounded by numerous vitellocytes. The main features of oocyte differentiation are the accumulation of lipid droplets and the appearance of Golgi complexes and small bodies possibly representing secondary lysosomes. Vitellocytes show features typical of secretory cells, including well-developed rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) and Golgi complexes which are involved in the production of type A and type B inclusions, hi both species, type A inclusions appear first, have a glycoprotein content, do not contain polyphenols, and become localized in the peripheral cytoplasm of mature vitellocytes; they have been interpreted as eggshell forming granules. Type B inclusions are larger, have a proteinaceous content with a different structure in the two species examined, and remain scattered in the cytoplasm of mature vitellocytes; they are considered to be yolk. The finding of eggshell forming granules without polyphenols in prorhynchids contrasts with the condition in most platyhelminths that have a sclerotized eggshell formed through a tanning process of polyphenolic substances. The small bodies in the oocytes and the eggshell granules in the vitellocytes of Lecithoepitheliata differ from those observed in prolecithophorans, which have oocyte and vitellocyte inclusions similar to those of the Rhabdocoela. 相似文献
