Effect of defrosting on quantity of volatile amines in stored sardines and herring used for tuna fattening

Studied were the quantities of volatile amines, total volatile bases nitrogen (TVB‐N) and trimethylamine nitrogen (TMA‐N) in stored sardines (Sardina pilchardus) and herring (Clupea harengus) over a 24‐h period after defrosting. At the beginning of the experiment analyses showed TVB‐N quantities in the flesh of both species to be higher than the FAO‐recommended limit. TMA‐N concentrations exceeded the acceptance limit 6 h after defrosting in herring samples and after 12 h in sardines. During the entire experiment TMA‐N and TVB‐N concentrations in sardines were above the tolerance limit. The defrosting method usually applied in tuna farms is unsuitable for maintenance of a high quality food supply. Low quality baitfish can cause reduced weight gain as well as induce health problems and mortality in farmed tuna (Thunnus thynnus) populations.

Diversity and distribution of reptiles in Romania

The reptile fauna of Romania comprises 23 species, out of which 12 species reach here the limit of their geographic range. We compiled and updated a national database of the reptile species occurrences from a variety of sources including our own field surveys, personal communication from specialists, museum collections and the scientific literature. The occurrence records were georeferenced and stored in a geodatabase for additional analysis of their spatial patterns. The spatial analysis revealed a biased sampling effort concentrated in various protected areas, and deficient in the vast agricultural areas of the southern part of Romania. The patterns of species richness showed a higher number of species in the warmer and drier regions, and a relatively low number of species in the rest of the country. Our database provides a starting point for further analyses, and represents a reliable tool for drafting conservation plans.     

Gibberellin involvement in dormancy-break and germination of seeds of celery (Apium graveolens L.)

The temperature-dependent, primary dormancy of cv. Florida 683 celery seeds in darkness was partially broken by a 30 min light exposure on the third day of incubation at 20–22°C, resulting in c 50 percent germination after 20 days. This light stimulation was negated by including different inhibitors of gibberellin biosynthesis in the incubation medium. Subsequent addition of a solution of the gibberellins A₄ and A₇ or of the gibberellin-active compound (1-3-chlorophthalimido)-cyclohexane carboxamide (AC94,377) overcame the inhibitory effects on germination of these GA-biosynthesis inhibitors. Overwintering and growth regulator treatment effects on celery (Apium graveolens L.) flowering and seed production

Celery (Apium graveolens L.) plants cv. Jason overwintered in a polythene tunnel flowered earlier and grew taller than similar plants given a 10-week cold-treatment at 5°C prior to transplanting in the same tunnel in mid-February. However, there was no significant difference in the yield of seeds obtained from both treatments, plants grown at a density of 4m^-2 yielded less seeds than those at 2m^-2, though the yield per unit area was slightly higher from the high density treatment. Treatment with 100 mgl^-1 GA₃ applied twice just prior to flowering and during anthesis increased flower stalk, flower pedicel and stamen length but delayed flower opening and seed ripening and decreased seed set and seed yield. Treatment with a mixture of 1000 mgl^-1 GA₄ and GA₇ plus 1000 mgl^-1 ethephon on three occasions during seed ripening decreased seed yield and reduced seed germination though those seeds capable of germinating were less dormant than seeds from untreated plants. The size distribution of seeds was unaffected by any treatment other than the preseeding spray with GA₃ which reduced the percentage of medium-size seeds.     

A comparison of the effect of three fungicides on growth and roridin E production by Myrothecium roridum

Three fungicides, chlorothalonil, dichloran and mancozeb were studied to determine the effects on growth and production of roridin E by Myrothecium roridum in vitro. With increasing concentrations of fungicides, both growth and production of roridin E were inhibited. Of the three fungicides, chlorothalonil was much more effective in the inhibition of growth and production of roridin E, than dichloran and mancozeb.     

Ultrastructural changes during encystment and germination of Bdellovibrio sp.

Under proper conditions, Bdellovibrio sp. strain W cells develop into bdellocysts in appropriate prey bacteria. After attachment and penetration of the prey cell, the encysting bdellovibrio began to accumulate inclusion material and increase in size, and was surrounded by an outer layer of amorphous electrondense material. The cytoplasm of the encysting cell appeared more electron dense, and nuclear areas appeared more compact. During germination of bdellocysts, the outer wall was uniformly broken down the inclusion material changed shape and affinity for the heavy metal stain, and the nuclear areas expanded. As the outer wall was dissolved, outgrowth began with the elongation of the germinant as it emerged from the prey ghost as an actively motile cell.     

Integral equation models for endemic infectious diseases

Summary Endemic infectious diseases for which infection confers permanent immunity are described by a system of nonlinear Volterra integral equations of convolution type. These constant-parameter models include vital dynamics (births and deaths), immunization and distributed infectious period. The models are shown to be well posed, the threshold criteria are determined and the asymptotic behavior is analysed. It is concluded that distributed delays do not change the thresholds and the asymptotic behaviors of the models.This work was partially supported by NIH Grant AI 13233.
